I'm in the process of tarding out the DRZ, and in Aus, the standard price for an EBC 320mm disk is about $300 - $350 depending where you shop.
then the caliper spacer thinggo is another 100 or so dollars ontop of that.
But
Since looking at dirtbike stores in america, i've found that you can get the Disk AND bracket for a total of US $179, from a well known shop (thumpertalk) which, with shipping works out about $290 Aus
This seems to me to be a much cheaper option than $420 in Aus, but i have an uneasy feeling that i'm going to get stung with a nasty import tax or duty etc.
Has anyone imported anything like this before? run into any unfortunate taxes that make the whole deal not worth the trouble?
Cheers :)

You should be ok - generally stuff < about $400 doesn't get looked at by customs, and above this amount its still a very hit & miss affair. I bought a pair of hotcams off ebay from the US, about $350 AU worth, and didn't get any tax. If they do tax you I think the most you get taxed is generally 5-10% duty plus GST at 10% on top of that, so about 20% is the most you should expect to pay even on big stuff as long as it doesn't go into some weird tax/duty/tarrif thing.
Dunno whether the FTA with yank-land has changed any of this for consumers

p.s. the diff in price comes down to the difference in size of retailers and the gouging that importers into aus generally do...

The actual law is less than Au$200 (including the price of postage) there is no tax.
Above this and you are legially liable for 10% gst plus import duty of different % depending on what the gear is. If it gets looked at or not is a different thing.
If the item is sent to you with a declaired value of less than $200, then you are fine for no tax......its actual value is of no importance, until the $hit hits the fan.

Rohan, the rule is under 1000, changed recentely.
The best and easiest thing for you to do is get it sent parcel post either sea or air directly to your door. If you have a price declaration on the front of the parcel you will not attract the attention of customs. I am not sure of the US postal service name but it can be organised threw them. Alternatively if you ask the person sending it to (probably has a dedicated carrier they use) Ask the sender to get a price declaration for to be filled out and attached.

DRZ side covers are made of cheese(brittle cheese at that) and what they do is make up some aluminum that gets glued over them to stop thigs (brake/gear lever) going through them.

Yup. Brittle cheese may even be too generous.
Thats a little harsh, mine have taken a good beating. Anyone with a DRZ....... get the case savers. I dropped my bike one on my front patio......I do not want to go into how..... anyway the gear lever which had not yet been rounded off put a good kink in the engine case. I ordered from thumpertalk and they cost me me less than $50 Aus delivered and all to my door. I ordered friday night and recieved on Wed. It was money well spent. Just do it. I just got a little $8 tube of hight temp silicone and glued em on and then taped in place to hold overnight.

okeydokey,
i'm getting it all from the Thumpertalk website,
www.thumpertalk.com
here are the case shields
http://shop.thumpertalk.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BP%5FCFC%5FCASE&CartID=1
on their own shipped to aus it works out about $70 AUD
I'm also getting the EBC disk kit
its here:
http://shop.thumpertalk.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TR%5F612786&CartID=4
This is the page with all the different part numbers for different bikes.
find the one corresponding to your bike and punch it in up in the left hand corner for a TT price.
should be $179
http://shop.thumpertalk.com/catalogs/Tucker_Rocky_Offroad_2006/default.asp?p=828&s=2
and a tip for the wise, if you sign up as a member on the forums there as i did a few days ago, you get a 10% off voucher code emailed to you.
so i bundled the case savers and the disk kit to save shipping & ended up with a total of $310 AUD.
not half bad really.

Nice looking disc Rohan.
I like the outer edge profiling, and the new design on the ventilation mixing the slots and holes also is a different approach.
Finish looks good too.
I think EBC overdo the centre carrier for distal offload from the anchor rivets with the big triangular webs, but hell they work, and aren't likely to fail through the carrier giving it up... ;)
You did well with the time and tax issue too mate, a win all round.
