hi, just doing my research to convert my 2002 DRZ400E. i have been reading a lot of the great information you guys have posted, but have been unable to find out if the wheels off the DRZ400SM will fit straight onto the DRZ400E. i'm sure this may have been asked before, but i couldn't find it - so apologies up front...
i want to keep the stock wheels as are so i can covert it back to dirt quickly, so will be buying complete wheels front and back.
would it work out any cheaper / better to buy the SM wheels with oversize disc. would i need a new caliper to accomodate the new disc?
does the real wheel/disc fit directly?
i was originally going to buy new talon hubs and rims, but thought the SM wheels may be a better option.
thanks, chris. :?: :?:

I'm not absolutely sure on the SM wheels, but from what I've heard it sounds like they should fit, but I'm not sure whether the standard spacers will be OK or not. The SM uses RM forks and a slightly different swingarm, so its difficult to say precisely, but I'm pretty sure I've heard guys putting the E dirt wheels on the SM so it should cut both ways :?: Some KTM and WR/YZ wheels will fit with some work on spacers as well.
For caliper, you don't need to replace it, but you do need at least a relocation bracket to account for the larger diameter disc...

NEils the DRZ king here mate any Q's he'll have the answer!
There is a picture in the galley of a 400E with Talon hub and EBC disc with the spacer. I have seen quite a few motorcross wheel sets quite cheap in places. Infact the other week at the local bike shop there were some second hand motorcross rims from a YZ for $250 (front and back including sproket and rubber). If you can find some regular DRZ wheels and have 17 inch rims laced up I reckon it would work out cheaper and probably lighter (Talon hubs are probably unnecessarily large for the common rider). You can always put the oversize rotor and spacer on later. (As far as I am concerned the orginal caliper and master cylinder are more than adequate). Changing the wheels over is a quick job takes me about 30 to 45 minutes including front guard and depending on the success of the chain link (bastard little thing)
Just my 2 cents.

ive got my talon / excel DRZ wheels for sale ... was going to post up pics and price later this week after i took pics ...
320mm ebc rotor and spacer, tyres, sprockets, chain if wanted, rear brake rotor ... gold hubs and wheels ...
was going to start with $2k and see how it goes ... all excellent condition (except front tyre which is still good in the middle)

Shit Kimo,
If you sell the motard wheels, then you are gonna get blown off  come the end of September and you grace the Tawonga Gap again...
Seems logical to me unless you get something quicker than the GSXR750 :) ...

Just to answer the original question, it looks like the original DRZ E wheels are directly interchangeable with the DRZ-SM even though they run different forks. As evidenced by this pic:
