I have a friend coming over from Japan for a week next month. Want to take him on a ride through VIC, 3 days, 2 nights.
I'll be on my 610 and he'll be on a hired cruiser. I want to avoid boring highways and stick to twisties and scenic roads as much as possible.
I'd love to do the Alpine Rd but getting there and back involves too much boring highway.
Any ideas for a good route and places to stay?

You can still do the Alpine Rd Stuart - either direction but basically
Yarra Junction - Powelltown - Noojee - Willow Grove - Rawson - Cowarr - Maffra - Sale - Bairnsdale - Swifts Creek - Omeo - Dinner Plain - Hotham - Bright - Buffalo - Gentle Annie / Rose River - Whitfield - Toollembup - Mansfield - Matlock - Reefton Spur - Warburton - Yarra Junction ;)
While your up the top you can do the Rocky Valley loop through Falls Creek as well

That's not a bad route Muzz. http://www.drivethere.com.au/default.aspx?q2=from%3A-37.75757%2C145.35319%28Lilydale%20VIC%2C%20Austral ia%29%20via%3A-37.92035%2C145.96963%28Shandley%20Rd%29%20via%3A-38.05359%2C146.68138%28Ross%20Rd%29%20via%3A-38.01523%2C147.43094%28Unknown%20road%29%20to%3A-37.825114%2C147.628962%28Bairnsdale%20VIC%2C%20Aus tralia%29%20to%3A-37.098832%2C147.594222%28Omeo%20VIC%2C%20Australia %29%20to%3A-36.727237%2C146.960491%28Bright%20VIC%2C%20Austral ia%29%20via%3A-36.50555%2C146.55974%28Trakton%20Rd%29%20via%3A-36.60995%2C146.39406%28Wangaratta%20Whitfield%20Rd %29%20to%3A-37.75757%2C145.35319%28Lilydale%20VIC%2C%20Austral ia%29
I thought you were winding me up when I first saw that list, but it's actually less than a 1000km. I left out Reefton on the route above so there's room for more twisties on the way home if we're not too shagged.

Cheers Stuart -
Short of doing the Reefton Spur you can go straight ahead at Cambarville (coming from Matlock) and lob into Marysville.
From there either the Acheron Way or out to the Maroondah Hwy and do the Black Spur
There is some dirt sections on the route but its good surface and graded about 3 months ago.
Can be very fast on the dirt sections too so watch the tightening corners.
Hope you have a great weekend with your mate Champ.
Footnote - I will be leading a group along this route early 2011 and adding some more challenging offroad on day 2
