Hey All,

Here's a quick wrap up of round 2 of the Victorian Road Race Championships from Phillip Island on the 22nd and 23rd May 2010.

So I'd never ridden Phillip Island before and was really looking forward to it because I'd only ever driven around it before so I knew the layout.
I was not able to do Friday's practice so turned up Friday night and bunked down ready for 1st practice/qualifying on Saturday morning.
I was 3rd group up so was nervous but anxious to get out there and go for it.
First impressions, OMG how freaking fast is this!!!! Awesome to say the least.
I didn't have high expectations for finishing up the front in my class just because of the circuit being so fast and most bikes in my class being of at least 1000cc or greater.
This showed in my results for the weekend 12th in class in both races out of 13 bikes.
We race on track with the Pre Modern F1 and F2 bikes so the field is 35+ strong, I qualified on the 7th row in 28th place with a 2:02.324 with only one 18min session to do so on my 1st time. I finished both races ahead in 24th and 25th position so that was a plus.
My goals for the weekend were to get under 2mins and get to 200+kph, of which I did both.
In race 1 I did my best time for the weekend of 1:58.454 and also got too 196 kph. I was getting front end wobbles thru turns 2, over Lukey Heights and coming onto the front straight which I probably could have sorted on Friday during practice but ’thems the breaks’ as they say.
Saturday was over for me just after lunch because I was only racing in the one class so practice/qualifying and race one on Saturday and warm-up and 2 races on Sunday.
Sunday mornings warm up was basically 2 laps each class and back in the pits.
Race two was at 10:30am but the side cars left some oil on the track and we were the next class up and were sweepers after the clean up. Everyone’s times were slower but no incidents and I finished 25th. I did however get to 204kph!
My next race was scheduled for 1pm but eventually got cancelled due to running out of time for the event due to oil on the track again and a few more incidents.
Because my last raced got canned I got to go out in the BEARS race but again got swamped by 996/999/1098/1198 Duc’s so it was over a lap early for me but track time is track time and I took it.
Next round I will definitely be entering 2 classes just for more track time but P.I. was just a bit more expensive so that’s why I didn’t this time.
All up a good weekend with my goals achieved and no damage. My bike performed perfectly with the new 550 motor and 16/42 gearing.
With points from rounds 1 and 2 I'm now sitting in 3rd place in the Thunderbikes class in the championship with 2 more rounds to go.

I would like to thank Melbourne Aprilia for the Agip Oil, spares and Bridgestone tyres, Dave Ward from Moto Italia in NSW for the 550 engine supply, Brad Black from Brad The Bike Boy for setting up the bike and the Nicolson Racing boys for the their company throughout the weekend. Bad luck about the 600 Benny but great you’re ok and got back out to compete for points again. Adam pull ya finger out!

Below is a short edit I did from the helmet cam footage and some pics I took around the pits. Thanks to Marty Duke for the lend of his HD Go Pro Camera.

Cheers Mark

Nice write-up Mark and a great vid. I'd love to ride the Island again.

Did you bump into Relphy down there? His Daughter was racing in the juniors on her Metrakit.

Great stuff Mark and well done.

As you were riding around PI, were you imagining that you were Stoner or Rossi?
