View Full Version : Soooo, i've got nasty S&M thoughts again
I sold my DRZ and bought a 450EXC. I might be able to fit some SM wheels in the budget so I priced a kit from KTM and it's $3200 for the whole lot ready to go inc extra chain etc... How much do you reckon I could do it for using non Kato parts without too much fucking around? I'd prefer cush drive too.

Full retail on a set of talon wheels (bare rims, built, but no brake kit) is about $1900, and they do a cush drive rear hub as well from memory (check out http://www.talonoz.com). Add on about $400 for a brake kit and $100 for a chain, plus a bit for sprockets to gear things up a bit, and you'd be looking at around $2500 for the whole lot at full retail price, plus tyres.
That will give you a set of wheels built specifically for the KTM that should just bolt straight up - there's more fucking around with things like the speedo drive if you want accurate speed than with the wheels themselves. Alternatively keep an eye out on ebay as KTM stuff seems to come up most often, though its pretty hit & miss at times.
The alternative is to try and get some wrecked hubs and then buy the rims and spokes separately and get your local dirt bike store to lace them up. Using the stock hubs would mean standard spacers etc so not much fucking around apart from finding the hubs, but that in itself can be a pain in the arse. Which is why I went the talon route... :)

Cal,
The lace up is a good idea but the wreckers are onto us tardos, at least they are over here in the west, meaning you will pay seveal hundred for the hubs, then 1100 for the rims and the lace job, then you are still left with braking issues.
My old man (60yrs to be precise) had a nasty spill in January and has not riden since. There is a whole story to this which I did not actually post which is a shame cause its good for a laugh. I was speaking with him today and it would appear that he is turning to the dark (dirty) side and may not be coming back to tarding. He has a 05 525. He reckons he does not want to sell his rims but I reckon if I rang him and said I had a buyer he might seriously consider it, circa 2K with the lot, including moderately shagged tyres, a motard front guard and number plate. Rear disk is wavy I think, front is full 320 floater (I think) and it has the speedo magnet in it but the speedo will still be out by a bit (effect of diameter).
Cant promise anything but can ask if you want??
Mitch (oh...and we are in WA)

Cal, you're gay. Nothing to do with the S&M wheels, just a gentle reminder :)
Seriousloy though, for the draks they are asking I'd be happy sticking to the trail riding. Motarding is fun, but geez $3000 buiys a heck of a lot of dirt tyres and physio sessions
Here's a start:

Good luck.
Thanks Tom, but neither of those seem much good, the set of 2 looks to have a standard front rotor & no other parts. Backmarker, i'm not sure if the '05 and '06 have the same axle size but i'll check it out, thanks.
And Antti - leave me out of your fantasies!!!

Go with what Neil says. On the cush drive side of things I believe prepel (I think) did some kind of version that was supposed to help.

i looked at the prepel sprockets ... and i am sure that they might do something ... but i cant see how ... there is a nylon (or similar) ring that goes around the sprocket bolt that is only a couple of mm ... nothing at all like a rubber cushion :(
