View Full Version : Brisbane riders
Hi everyone. Thought it was about time I joined this forum seein as I ride a KTM 690SM. Anyone here ride Northside Saturday and Sunday. We usually ride Mount Mee, Peachester Range and Mount Glorious when the cops aren't blitzing it. Normally safe at 6am. Found some great tight twisty goat tracks on the Bellthorpe Range I'm exploring with my brother. :D

Hey There Jinx,
Myself and maybe bb63 and daws may be able to hook up one day for a cruise.
I've got taller gearing on the old wr now so its not as painful , but i don't think
i'd go further nth than mt mee still.oh yeah bellthorpe would be good :D but
that would be my limit.
Hi Jinx. :D
Bellthorpe is a beaut tard road, Palmwoods-Montville is a belter as well ( Ussually gets a couple of laps) and dont forget Obi Obi Rd ( always gets a couple of laps ). Neurum? Rd from Woogford-Kilcoy isnt bad either.
I try and avoid Glorious due to the cops and idiots but am often on Mt Mee and the road from Wamuran-Mt Mee is another goodun.
Post up a ride sometime or I may see ya on the road.
Cheers brian

You ok with dirt Jinx ?
Hi bandy. No bashplate but dirt/gravel roads wont be a problem. My brother rides a DR 650 so he's happy either way. We are out early most Saturday and Sunday mornings for a couple of hours or more (110-160 klm). Got families so we spend the rest of the day doin the usual stuff. Always interested in new areas to ride. I live at Narangba so most of these roads are on my door step. Got 4 days off this weekend and weather forecast is for sunny and 32*C all week so I should be riding every day.

As long as you don't mind a 'fat, overweight and underpowered' DRZ poocart along:eek:

I aint that quick (yet);) and Steve runs knobbies on his DR.

Sounds very interesting and I would be in. But I buggered my knee yesterday and am not sure how long that's going to take to sort out. But at some later date I am definitely in!!!

not going to make it on Saturday - but I am keen if a ride happens again.
We go out to Dayboro every weekend so no problem guys. Will still be grabbing a coffee Saturday and probably Sunday morning between 6 and 6.30am if anyone is interested. Then straight up Mount Mee and check out some more roads on the Bellthorpe and Peachester Range. Lifes good:D
We met up with Dave (Daffy67) in Dayboro and 3 of us headed over Mount Mee and Bellthorpe Range to check out some new roads. Great 160 klm ride apart from the 10klm of gravel roads through the forestry on road rubber. Steve and Dave were on trail tyres so they didn't mind. Only had to dodge one roo today and an unmarked cop car at Wamuran ( light blue Commodore wagon). Try and get out Sunday morning for another go. Thanks Steve and Dave. Lifes good:D

Totally missed this one :-(
The knee is getting better every day. What about Sat morning?
Great ride this morning. Ok Saturday morning guys, 6.15am for coffee at the bread shop in Dayboro. Up and over Mount Mee, Bellthorpe range and back down the Peachester Range. We were thinking of trying the roads near Crystal Waters too if anyone knows some good bitumen. Lifes good :D
Bandy and I did a last minute organised run thru the dirt at Mt Mee forestry to Neurum and back over the road at Mt Mee this morning. Only about 160ks, but had a ball. :D
Gotta love the distanzias.
Cheers Brian
PS: where is Crystal Waters Jinx?

Looks like I need a bash plate but will stay with the road rubber;). Crystal Waters is in between Bellthorpe and Conondale. Plenty of roads around there but not sure which ones are bitumen.

Cool, looks like some good exploring in there, doesnt matter if not bitumen tho, thats what tards are for. :D
There is a road between witta and Obi Obi Rd that I would like to try one day too.
Cheers Brian

Hi Brian. Plenty of roads for us to choose from at the back of the Sunshine Coast. With the local councils dropping the speed limits to a crawl around here and police blitzing the usual bike roads we need to travel further out anyway.

What did you do to your knee Jefred ?
A, hmm... went to play basketball on Monday. Lasted about 1 minute on the court before I slid and fell in some awkward position... heard some funny noises...
Have been to a physio and it seems no serious damage. But it is still swollen. I will give it another few days rest and should be ready on Sat. Just hope there will be mostly bitumen so I can take it easy on the knee.

Got to work Saturday. Bugger:banghead: Be in Dayboro 6.15am Sunday morning if the weather's ok.
Where's the best place to buy tyres in Briz, preferably northside. Only done 2000 klm on the rear BT 090 and its nearly knackered. Front will last a bit longer. Any thoughts on tyres like the Brigestone BT 016 or Michelin 2CT. What sort of price?

Latest weather forecast was for showers increasing. Keep ya fingers crossed.

Good ride today Jefred and Steve. Roads were a bit damp in places over Mount Mee but not enough to slow us down too much. Dry bitchumen up through the Bellthorpe and Peachester Ranges so almost a perfect day for the Tards.:D Lifes good.
I will be in Sydney next weekend so wont get out to Dayboro for a ride. The Gold Coast Motorcycle Expo is on the following weekend so probably be there on the Saturday and Dayboro on Sunday morning weather permitting. Catch ya later guys.

Good ride guys. Cheers.
On the run down from the mountain to Dayboro there was a guy on a bicycle on ground tended by coppers and then I have seen a ambo going up the hill. Not pretty.
Also I was just looking on Google Maps and there should be heaps of back roads to be explored in the area around Mt Nebo, Dayboro, Bellthorpe etc. We should give it a go!!!

Not surprised a pushie rider has come a pisser on Mount Mee. They were ridin like a bunch of wankers on the way there, swerving all over the road, 3 abreast and forcing cars over double whites. Seen them overtaking cars and motorcycles on blind bends on Glorious. Must be safe as they were wearing a helmet and lycra . About time the cops blitzed them and left us alone.
Google maps are a great way of spottin tard roads. I blow them up to A3 size. There are some back roads between Woodford and the Peachester Range that could be a goer too. Seem to remember the road past the prison was ok years ago. Might be better now.
This morning was a no go. Been pissin down since 1 this morning and black as a sack at Narangba now.

I went there few months back. There was a small section of unseald road but it was all good. Much better than going along the main road. There is also a dirt track along the way so whatched the kiddies having a ball for a while.

Hey guys,
Converted the KTM to tard several months ago and have never acutally gotten it out of the suburbs (had a knee recon). I'd like to meet up this weekend if anyone is going out?
Thanks,
Dan.
Hi Dan. We meet at Dayboro and head out through Mount Mee and Bellthorpe and Peachester Ranges every weekend unless its pissin down. Usually go early around 6.30 am to avoid the cyclists and tourists. Last week the roads were wet with 20m vis in some spots but still a good ride. Weather forecast for this weekend doesn't sound promising but they dont get it right very often. What suburb you in?
Hey guys u should all come out to the QLD Supermoto Titles at Stanthorpe March 13/14 and have a ride in the Novice Exhibition class. Its a rare chance for you to try a proper supermoto track. Track day fee is $80 + $20 for rec license each day.
Excellent news this morning, the Novice class has been sorted so it can be entered by using a rec license or a single use rec license. A single use rec license is just $20. So now all you street guys have no excuse!!!!!!! Keep in mind the novice class is not a race class, it is purely a timed session like a track day.
Looking forward to seeing you all there!!!!
That's shit hot for anyone with a tard Jov! I don't think I've seen a deal as good as that anywhere, and on a proper SM track amongst it all no less.
full race day feel without the race day pressure

Jovian,
That sounds great. So by proper motard you mean combination tarmac and dirt? Can I run street tyres with too much trouble?
And I assume all the usual race/track day requirements are required ie. tiewire, handguards, no coolant etc?
proper motard, with dirt, street tyres will be fine. usual track requirements

Glorious is ok if we go early and beat the tourists. Cops can get bad at times with radar and defects. There are some great bike roads up there especially down the other side towards Somerset Dam. Might try for next weekend.

"Read the Supp-regs and get your entry in before the closing date, which is usually about 10 days before the race meeting. Unlike some motorcross events entries are not accepted on race day."
Do you know of a good bike shop that has crash knob kits for KTM on the shelf?
When I was road racing we drilled and wired the caps and plugs, do you guys do the same or can you get away with tie wiring tight around the cap or plug without drilling it?
Thanks Jovian - its good to see someone putting effort into mustering interest for their sport and competition.

I have KTM axle sliders you can borrow, you bend them you own them. Alternatively Skateboard wheels and threaded rod like Jovian says. I have some Skateboard wheels and Nylock nuts you can have for free, just get some threaded rod.
Lockwiring and a catch-can will take you 1 hour maximum, Jovian didn't take that long to lockwire almost every visible fastener on his bike a few years ago ;)

Good ride today guys. Did Bellthorpe and Peachester Range after you left. No traffic through the twisty stuff for once and plenty of motorcycles around making the most of the dry roads. Jinx, I think I read in a post that you live in Narangba? We have looked at a couple of houses up that way, what is your opinion of the living/lifestyle?
Our biggest issue is that my girlfriend has gone back to Uni in the city, so the travel might be a challenge. We are currently at Camp Hill on the south side.
Selfishly, I want to live someone I can ride out the door! Ie. I just spent 2.5 years in Canada, and I could be in the picture below in about 20min by literally riding out my driveway (thats the town below) bloody miss it.

Hi DJS. PM sent. We really like it here. Lived in the area on and off since the 80s. Spent 2.5 years on Christmas Island near Indonesia. Narangba is only a few minutes from the twisty stuff, bush, forestry roads, highway and trains.. What were you doing in Canada?

Its only Tuesday and already 6 tards lined up for the weekend. Do we want to meet a bit later Saturday morning as Dan and maybe some others are coming from the southside. Is everyone ok with Dayboro or got something else in mind.

I have to be back mid-morning so may cut the ride short if we leave too much later. Don't let that stop the group consensus though.

Hi Daffy. If we meet at 6.45am and head off about 7am that will give us plenty of time to do Mount Mee, Belthorpe and Peachester Ranges before you leave. If the rest are still keen then we can do the Neurum road to Kilkoy. Anyone else got some ideas?

Sounds good Dan. Meet in Dayboro 6.45am Saturday at the Dayboro bakery and leave at 7am ish. Do Mount Mee, Bellthorpe and Peachester Ranges at least. Still open to suggestions if anyone has a favourite bit of twisty black stuff. Got a weekend pass so Sunday morning is a goer too if the back tyre holds out.:D

I was having fun until that stupid header nut fell off somewhere:roll:
Pipe was loose and rattling and backfiring like crazy. I visited the mower shop Steve told me about (that's when you all saw me turn around), $5:eek: for a nut and I got home.
The fuzz were just outside Woodford (they had a cage pulled over) I think you all would have seen them.
Great ride, it's a nice short route that one and I'll have to do it again soon (busy tomorrow).

Great ride guys and really good to see a few tards together. Glad it was only a missing nut Daffy. My bike didn't feel right today. Steering wasn't as sharp as usual, a bit vague. Got home and checked the tyre pressures and found they were around 27psi . Put 32psi in and handles great again . Anyone riding tomorrow?

Have to make it a longer ride next time guys. They reckon you run the motards at a lower pressure than sports bikes cuz they are lighter. Problem is the 690 is only 10kg lighter than an R6 and they run 36psi or more on the same tyres. I now know that 4psi makes a big difference to my bike.
Nice sliders Dan. Knew you engineers could do it;)

Its all good Bandy mate. You reckon your hopeless but I've seen you ride. More like a fast, crazy old bastard ;). I should have checked the tyres at home or the servo. Might try running simmilar pressures to the R6 when I get my new tyres.
Jefred we need to check out some more backroads. All this wet weather lately has slowed things down a bit. I want to try Campbell Pocket road from Wamuran end. Plenty of roads on the map but it doesnt say which ones are dirt and you know how much I like gravel . Been a sports bike rider for over 30 years and old habits are hard to change now.
Here's a higher res photo taken in Dayboro.

Going away for the break, the kids will be riding their 125's and i'll be tootling around on my quad.
Did Campbells Pocket road to Mount Mee, Diagular and Wamuran this morning. Roads were a bit wet but well worth the effort.
Did it again today. Dry roads, great weather, had a total blast. Much better way of getting to the top of Mount Mee and out to Diagular through the twisties. You only miss out on the crap 60kph zones from Dayboro and cops revenue raising.
Checked out some more roads I found on Google maps. Some dont even exist as its farmland and not even gravel roads. There's another road on the other side of the Bellthorpe Range that might be ok. Need to check it out next week. Lifes good
Found a great tard road today, ( pity I was on the SV  ) Delaneys Creek rd ( the turnoff is where Mal and I turned round the other week ) nice and tight twisties with a bit of gravel and even a creek crossing. It comes out at Neurum so you can carry on to Kilcoy or turn right to Woodford.
Cheers brian
Sounds great Brian. We might try that one next weekend. Getting a good collection of Tard roads and only 30 minutes from Narangba. Did Mount Mee again today with Steve and Lockie (iliketoride). All was going well until I nearly lost it on the last set of twisties before Delaneys Creek. Rear end stepped out on a fresh trail of oil some wanker had left. Must have dropped out the back of a ute or trailer as it was 1meter wide at the stop signs at Diagular.
Where do you guys get your tyres from at Brendale, Micks or Nicks? Mick hasn't got back to me yet and Nicks was a good price.
Who's going riding on the weekend.
The oil must be new this morning, wasnt there late yesterday.
As for tyres, I know bandy gets his from mick, have never heard of Nick....do you have any more info?
I am thinking of getting another set of distanzias for mine, just trying to find the best price for them. Dont want to go back to tyres for bikes as they broke the speedo drive on the SV last time I was there.
I wont be riding next weekend as i have the boys, may rock out to Lakeside on the sunday to catch up with the lads tho.
Cheers Brian
Brian, I think the oil was dropped this morning judging by the stuff at the stop signs at Diagular. Thick, wet, shiny and hadn't spread over the road and maybe there an hour or so.
Nicks tyres (Northside motorcycle workshop) are just around the corner from Micks in Kenworth Place. How many Klm did you get out of the Distanzas as Steve is thinking of getting a set for the DR650.
Had some problems with TFB too a few years ago. Fitted some Pirelli Phantoms on the Ducati and they managed to pinch the back tube fitting the tyres. Had a blowout the next day. Took it back and they replaced the tube and charged me for it. Riding to my girlfriends place that night and broke the new chain (1000k max). Luckily I only bent the chain guard and a split link later I was back on the road. phoned them the next day to complain and they said I should have checked it. Havent been back to TFB since .
Sunday sounds like the go at Lakeside.
daffy67
05-04-2010, 02:38 PM
TFB pinched my tube once when fitting, $30 for a new tube!!
jinx i got 7000klm out of my last rear Distanzia, it still had another 500-1000klm left in it if you wanted to stretch it and I'm still running the same front from that set.
There's 2 types of Distanzia and compounds, the 160/60 and 150/60 are the SM compound and softer. Go any other size for the rear and you get the normal dual sport compound distanzia that will likely last longer.
Thanks for the info Daffy. Ive let Steve Know and he's going to Brendale to get some prices this week. Wont get another ride out of my rear tyre so i need to fit another before the weekend. Got a price for some F&R BT016 and Distanzas from the US at around Aus$330 delivered. Thats $160 cheaper than TFB. Just need someone to fit them :)

Try www.cyclegear.com (http://www.cyclegear.com) as they say around US$300 delivered to OZ including shipping. Have to confirm it with an email to them. Cant see why not as I saved maybe $4000 so far buying stuff from the US in the last few years :D.

I've bought all my stuff for the DRZ from USA so far, just not tyres yet.
An old friend has a motorcycle shop at Caboolture near the airport and he might fit them if he's got the gear. If I order a few things it will cut down on the postage as they can throw stuff in the middle of the tyres.
Ok getting a BT016 fitted to the rear Friday arvo. Front will last a bit longer. Find a gravel road on the way home to rub the shiny stuff off, ready to rip into some twisty stuff on the weekend. Who's going riding :D

Hi George. Not riding this time, just watching but may be tempted later. Have to do a few mods to the bike first.
Ok guys, who's riding Saturday morning. We are heading up Campbells Pocket road to Mount Mee then maybe head out to Bellthorpe Range or Nuerum road but open to suggestions. Meet 6.30am at the BP Narangba on the corner of New Settlement and Oaky Flat roads. That way we head straight out the back to Wamuran. New tyres on the bikes so we will try to take it a bit easier

hi all :yoohoo:
I have only just joined the motard fray - bought my 2005 Husky SM610 about 6 weeks ago.
I live in Ferny Grove so its pretty easy for me to get out in the hills around Samford/Mt Mee/Dayboro/etc.
Jinx gave me a wave from the Mt Mee lookout carpark this morning as I was going past so I pulled in and met him and his brother, then tagged along with them for a couple of hours.
Was a good ride Jinx, thanks again.
Thanks Nick. Hope to see you again one weekend. Already looking forward to Saturday and Sunday morning through the twisties.

Okay guys. Weather isn't looking good for the weekend. If its not raining and roads are dry, meet 6.30am at the BP Narangba on the corner of New Settlement and Oaky Flat roads. We will head up Campbells Pocket road to Mount Mee. If its raining I'm having a sleep in :D.
Great ride today with Steve and Daffy. Weather was perfect and roads mostly dry. First time for Daffy out the back roads and up Campbells Pocket to Mount Mee and he had a big grin when we stopped at the lookout. No cops, radar or idiots driving cars.
The BT016 rubber is going well with 300klm so far and almost no chicken strips on the rear. Running 36psi front and 40psi rear and steering feels a lot more direct and overall handling is much better. Lifes good :D

Hi Nick. Have fun out bush and ride safe. Catch ya next time.
thought id put it up here that the BEARS series is at Morgan Park on 8/9th May. There is a track day before that you guys should go to and get preped for the racing. All European model roadies can enter formula 5 in the series as it for C/D graders and must run groved tyres.
Rounding up sports bikes is the most fun thing you can do on your motard and a good road rider would be at the pointy end of the class

What a crap morning. Roads were a bit damp on the way to the servo and met up with Steve and Daffy. Steve decided to take his V Max as it usually sits in the shed and needed a good run. We headed out the back trying to dodge the cow shit to Campbells Pocket and pulled over short of the twisty stuff. It must have rained just before and the roads were wet and greasy which aint my idea of a fun time. To make matters worse, Steve's clutch slave cylinder decided to piss hydraulic fluid over his motor and it started to rain . Time to head back and wash the crap off. Should have stayed in bed. Maybe ride tomorrow morning.

Nice one Mal, very subtle :D.
Might be tempted to do the 6am service at Mount Mee. Did the early morning service every year on Christmas Island when we lived there. Very moving as several pommie officers were killed by their Indian troops allowing the Japanese to occupy the place for a few years during WW2.
No chance of Steve lettin you ride the V Max, its his pride and joy. Don't know about puttin a chair on the side as it would make it too slow. Got to love the V max power when you hit 6,000 RPM, all hell breaks loose

Good ride today. Had 8 bikes, 5 sports and 3 motards rippin through the twisties. We didn't let the side down and led most of the way. You guys should have been there. I think we may have some converts soon after the floggin they copped . Lifes good.

no you didnt jinx , i'm staying home doing stuff and working on the rm-z now
and will be drinking beer :D
Hey Guys,
I'd be keen for a ride sometime, now that i'm back on the bike. I'm on the south side (darra), but often go around mt mee, neurum (dad lives there), connondale etc.
RE push bikes on mt nebo/glorious, last year when i got taken out by a car (car did an illegal u-turn just around a blind corner on mt nebo) - when i was in ED, there were probably three times as many pushbike casualties as there were motorbike ones. People think a motorbike rider is crazy for doing 100kph on a mountain road, try doing that on a push bike with no leathers, shit brakes and bugger all rubber.
Phil
Hi Cuvy. Come on one of our rides out the back to Mount Mee. We only go out for 2 or 3 hours but its enough. You probably know some good tard roads we haven't found yet.
Got to agree with ya there. Some of those pushy riders are a hell of a lot crazier than most motorcyclits.

maybe this weekend again?
Okay guys by popular request from Mr Daffy and co. Weather permitting and so far the forecast is for showers (so it could be cancelled). Mount Mee and Nuerum Road to Kilcoy. If you still want more we can follow the dam out to Somerset and back. MEET 7.45am LEAVE 8am Saturday morning at the BP Narangba on the corner of New Settlement and Oakey Flat roads.

Good ride guys apart from the damp roads and cold weather . Thought my bike was handling like crap and going wide on the corners. Checked the tyre pressures and the front was 27psi and rear was 33psi . The shop probably dropped the pressures last week when it was serviced. Have to check them more regular.

Hi guys, I haven't been on a ride for ages. Anyone keen for Sunday. The weather looks great! What about doing the full lap (Mt Mee, Somerset, Mt Glorious)?
Sounds like a good idea George. Anywhere near Woodford is going to total crap because of the concert so I would suggest stayin away from that area if we can. I will speak to Steve.
Take the Delaneys Creek rd thru to Neurum then onto Kilcoy to avoid Woodford.
May be up for this if not leaving to early, been early starts all week and wanna not have to be up before the sun.
Cheers Brian

See ya all tomorrow!

Bugger that idea Mal. I took the Hilux down that road and its rough as, with washouts big enough to swallow a Suzuki Sierra .
Okay guys we will be there. (Mount Mee, Kilcoy, Somerset and Glorious)
Great ride today guys and ended up doing round 250klm. Whoever was piloting that scooter past Somerset was doing well, in fact I've never seen a scooter go so fast through the twisty stuff. Glorious is crap now with all the lower speed limits so think I will stay with Mount Mee, Bellthorpe and Peachester Range. Roll on Spring.
Great ride today. :D
Was very surprised to see the scooter pull in in front of you guys tho
Have to agree about Glorious tho, hate that place and not just for the lower limits, was surprised you guys didnt pull into the dayboro pub tho.
More dirt next time? ;)
Cheers brian
Thanks for bringing up the scooter BRIAN  but it was haulin ass through the corners. Thought about the pub but the kid was playin footie in the arvo and Steve had some stuff to do.

More than welcome to tag along SWG, the more the merrier. We try and do at least 1 morning ride on a weekend, usually 150klm to 250klm. All our rides are on the northside of Brisbane and up to the Sunshine Coast hinterland. We do a few rides with sports bike riders who live in the area. Its funny watching them struggle through the Bellthorpe Range (single lane goat track) Last weekend we met up with some Streetfighter riders and rode from Dayboro, up Mount Mee, Peachester Range up to Maleney and back down to Beerwah via Bald Knob. Unbelievable ride and great bunch of guys.
