I put this Q to the board?
How hard would it be to turn the smr450 in to a dirt bike?
Just wondering I still want the dirt world as well

I'd imagine you'd just need the dirt wheels, a standard caliper (2 piston sliding pin brembo) and probably want a spare master cylinder setup and line to stop from having to stuff around with bleeding it when you swap over. Or, you could just ride it offroad just the way it is as some of the guys around here have a tendancy to do :)

I use my 450 with distanzias for everything but for the forth coming shitty time of year I would bo with 17 inch knobbies for the bush

I would happily ride Flash's 450 throught the mud and snot on full slicks :)
If it was my bike however, I'd be looking for real knobbies for serious dirt assaults or winter riding.
I've ridden on Pirelli MT60R's in the dirt and sand and they're not really up to it if you are going hard. They are great on the road, good on hard dirt, but too soft for serious dirt work. Distanzia's are probably equal or better as a 'tard tyre but to my eye look a bit more road than dirt oriented.
The big skinny front wheel would be a definate advantage in the dirt though.
If you want to run the SMR as a dirt bike just get a set of wheels with a big disk on the front, then it's a simple change over.
I'm looking to do the same with my KTM, but time and geographical stability are not my friends, so it's taking longer than I had hoped.
dicky.
I believe its not just the brakes, wheels and such but it gets more involved it may even be that you need the d'bike swingarm if you want to run d'bike rear wheel and tyres. This also goes for KTMs as the SMs run a shorter swingarm.

Suspension bits should be useable as is.
I can fit 21" and 18" wheels with knobbies into my SM.
The swingarm is supposed to be shorter, but I've checked it against an enduro and I can't see the difference.

I think the swing arms on the huskies are the same except on their race bikes.

Your all friggin' girls...
Get yourself some serious offroad gear in the form of a pair of IRC Volcanduro Enduro/MX tyres in 100/100-17 front and 5.10-17 rear and go for it men...
There a pic of one fitted floating around on SuperMotoJunkie somewhere...

Muzz,
Dented rim potential?? I would have no objections to a dirt blast on the tard. My only problem is that logically (wider tyre lower profile) if you hit a rock you are gonna get a mother of a dent.
True or false??

I have a few minor dents but you can ask some of the other guys I go reasonably hard. I think with the 17 knobbies it should protect the rim a fair bit.

85% of my riding is dirt at the moment.
I have the advantage of being silly enough to transform a standard WR in a motard with its enduro wheels, when I feel like riding a real dirtbike (against a SMR or simular)
No dents or such YET!!!
