Hey guys i just bought a 2005 ktm 640sm (LC4) and have been having a ball. its advertised with, and does have on the dash a fuel light. plus theres a trip meter called F (im assuming for fuel). but even if i run it empty (160k's or so) the light never comes on and the trip meter (F) never changes from 0 and you cant set it. looked under the tank and theres not electrical connections to it (you would think so if it had a fuel guage). just wondering if its supposed to work or if they just use the guages out of other bikes but it doesnt work on this one, any helps appreciated guys. have a good one

No idea about the LC4 dash myself (dicky?) but I know a few dirt bike dashes can be a bit dodgy ... the drz one works ok but costs about 6 squillion dollars to replace ... the husky 610 one has a habbit of dieing ... LC4 though, not sure....

It doesnt work.
I vaguely remember the dealer telling me about it when I bought my '03

The fule light and trip meter only work on the 950 adventure and superduke I think.
It never worked on my 640 but does on the adventure. It should say in your manual. It did in mine

Wobblers on the money with the facts on the KTM speedo.
The SMC I get on Saturday has a 9.2 litre tank with 2.5 reserve, same as the 640 SM.
I'm predicting a fair bit less fuel economy with the SMC's FCR as apposed to the SM's CV carb.
This is my second 'tard so I could spose you could say, this Saturday I'm getting re-tarded. :)
Cheers,

Just a note SMC625. The 640 tank is bigger at 11.5L, yours is 9.5 incl reserve.

Correct you are.
My mistake.
I had realised this later and had forgotten about the thread.
Same with the KTM SM & SMC Black plastics stuff which has all just changed due to price changes and the small supply of black seat bases.
I also had the wrong part numbers given to me, now I have the right ones.
Supa4 with the SM and I with the SMC went for a ride today and put the bikes side by side and compared them. The tank on the SM is a bit fatter with a completely different seat and locable cap and mine is thinner, screw on EXC/SX style cap.
I wasn't sure reading the specs. I had a momentary lapse of reason and added the 9.2 + 2.5 reserve and got 11.70 presuming they were the same.
I'm only getting 100 km's before reserve now after the pipes and the jetting and also starting to get used to the bike. ;)
The seat is a thin MX style one on the SMC, thank god it's got the small tank for my freckles sake.

Wow, I thought the SMC seat was ultra wide and luxurious (if somewhat hard) compared to the husky

The 300EXC that my mate has must have the same speedo unit cause its got the same features that dont work either, of course ;) ...
So Justin wheres the pics of you two wheelstanding down Beaconsfield Pde with the beach in the background then?

The speedo unit on the 640SM is different to the one found on the 625SMC. The 640 shares the same unit as 950SM,950ADV and 990SD. These have no reserve switch therefore have the fuel light, where as the 640 has reserve so no light. The speedo unit on the the 05 on 625SMC and EXC's is quite comprehesive, with mulitple measurements, from average speed, trip meters ect. Only the basic fetures are turned on from the factory. Check your owners manual on how to enable them. There is also a handlebar mounted switch (tripmaster switch)in the Hard E catalogue. Hope this helps

The computer on the drz had all sorts of fancy functions. Then I found out it cost something like $1200 to replace so I threw it in the parts bin instead and whacked on a cheapy trailtech :lol2:

I've just had a read through my manual ('04 640 SM) and it mentions the fuel light and fuel remaining mode on the speedo. It doesn't work for me either.

Its not sposed to work on the 640SM cause it has a reserve tap. The dash on the 640SM is more legible but doesnt have as many features as the enduro style one on the 625SMC. The "F" feature on the this particular dash (on the LC8's) starts counting the klms since the fuel light came on. It is overly optimistic, on my 990SD it would come on with 6-7 litres left in the tank. Most bike fuel gauges and lights work on a average reading over a certain amount of time. This is cause a bike leans over. On the Kato's it is measured over a 8 min period, which means if your tank is low and you go down a steep road it comes on then 5 mins later it turns off. Again this isnt available on the 640SM, but I my opinion I prefer a fuel tap reserve any day.

They need to rework the way the fuel light on the LC8's work's.
Maybe fuel senders in the tank like say a Ducati has, in the case of the Adventure bikes, 2 fuel senders.
The fuel light on the 990SD drives me crazy, first time I rode it the light was on so I pulled in to fuel it up. Rotter only took 3 litres. Then the light took a while to go off. I gather that it was probably the 8 minutes bogwoy is talking about.

In contrast to the 640SM, the light on my 640ADV does actually work.
It comes just before you need reserve.
Of course you still need to turn the reserve tap by hand....
And yes, it takes ages to go out after you refuel....
But it does work
Having removed the tank on the SM (and swapped it for an 18L) there is no electrical connection, hence the light doesnt work.

If you want the fuel light to go out after you fill up, hold down the set button for a couple of seconds when the dash is on the "F" reading and that will switch it off ;)
