A bit of a warm up for the GOR ride the next weekend, weekends weather is looking stinking hot. Wanted to see how lake mountain faired after the fires, haven't ridden to the top in a couple of years.
So maybe be on road by 8am or so, have the roads to ourselves. If we're feeling game can go home via the reefton spur, or even cut back through kinglake. Either way, hopefully be home by midday.
Anyone interested?

Yeah thats the one. Owen apparently can't head out too early, so how about meet at 11am?
can head up through myers/chum creek to healsville, then up through the spur to marysville then lake mountain.
From there we can decide whether we keep going and come home through reefton->warburton or head back the way we came.
yeh cool, will be hot enough by then too, scorcher sunday isnt it?

if you guys are heading out there at about 11ish can i meet u somewhere on the way if thats ok, im from Epping/south morang area. I can meet u's at greensborough or any where u want really, Im keen :)
Are u guys going 2 carry extra fuel? or stopping at every service station we see?
charlie
06-01-2010, 08:56 PM
na dont carry extra fuel. there are stops along the way. i get about 120k's out of a tank. you should be alright.
huskyboy610
06-01-2010, 09:06 PM
yeah, if we decide to go from lake mountain to reefton, that should be amusing for you boys with small tanks
husky450
06-01-2010, 09:06 PM
i can get 90 ks out of my tank (riding conservatively) :) but its not much fun riding like that.
I average about 70 ks from a tank i think
charlie

huskyboy610

fark, this ride might get very interesting :p
don't worry, Charlie can't ride too far without stopping for a smoke anyways, so there'll be plenty of fuel stops.
huskyboy610
06-01-2010, 09:14 PM
how far is that?
well lake moutain rd up and back is about 20km, then the reefton spur is about 50km of twisties. But because of the fires I think the nearest servo is at the end of the spur. So it'd be a bit over 100km to the next fuel stop I think.
I remember there being a big warning sign saying to check your fuel and it said about 100km to next servo...
We'll work something out, I'll strap my 10L jerry to the bike if i have to.

I've got a few 1 litre aluminium fuel cans that i normally take with me on long trail rides, i can bring a couple of them no dramas. I carried 3 and a half litres during the 2009 stockmans rally and it didnt bother me 2 much, once im riding i forget about the load in the camel back:)

A-C is the fun reefton spur bit.
The green highlighted road is one I've never got around to taking, think its partly unsealed. Always looked like fun, another option if fuel/distance is an issue..
huskyboy610
06-01-2010, 10:00 PM
Don't worry there's an easy fix. I've got the biggest range out of my tank. I'll just make sure its brimmed before we get to marysville. Anyone runs low we'll just siphon some out of mine.
Actually, we'll all just Mad Max Owens 950, he's got like a 20L tank.

I wouldn't mind trying the highlighted road, it does look like fun and if its partly unsealed should make it even better :)

I think that my speedo is giving me a wrong reading in speed/trip mode. Its a TE (enduro) model which comes out with a 21 inch front wheel and now that i have supermoto wheels on there i think this is the cause. So i do probably get 100ks out of 1 tank, i hope. I might post a new thread to see if other husky owners have converted their TE's to motard trim and what problems they have encountered

Well ride was epic, but not for entirely the best of reasons. Many corners were mashed, bitumen melted, and over 300km covered over 9hrs. Sadly a license was lost in the making of this tale....
So Charlie, Owen, Rod and I all met up at the Maccas, we waited a bit for Megahead, but clearly he had too good a saturday night. So shot up to Kangaroo grounds to meet Loris. Met a guy on another KTM 950SM, he was just finishing his ride for the morning. Zipped up to Toolanghi, blasted down through Chum Creek road (which was surprisingly quiet) and stopped for fuel.
We proceed to trash the black spur, had an odd run in with a hand painted black van with a V6 in it. Passed many other bikers and headed into Marysville. Stopped for a bite of lunch when Justin lucky (or unlucky) caught us as he was heading down from his "retreat".
We headed up to Lake Mountain where the road was very slick in many spots due to the high temps melting the bitumen. We then headed back down towards reefton. On a small straight I noticed we shot over some white tape, and then a few km down the road a few of us got stopped by the cops. Sadly Juz was the "last of the day", and got done for 150km/hr. We all feel its rather inaccurate as I was behind him at the time and no way was he doing 50km more than me.
This put a bit of dampner on the mood, so we plodded our way down the spur. At the bottom we met an "urban legend" rider, who has chopper bars welded to the clamps of his Honda Blackbird, and a BMW cruiser pulling a mini trailer with a happy Labrador in it.
This was about 4.30pm and we were all feeling the heat, but dreaded the boring Highway home. Rod took the straight way while Owen led us up a little half dirt/tar road which took us back to Healsville. From there me and Juz headed home (as I'm still scared of dirt), and the rest of the boys took the long way home through some more gravel.
Hopefully everyone got home safe.
Awesome ride, aside from the cops, I think next time we head out at 6am. More photos to come once I get the film developed.

10-01-2010, 09:07 PM
That was a bit of an epic ride, but for the wrong reasons eh!
First there was the soupy roads on lake mountain. In one section the tar was literally caking up onto the tires, making the next section very slippery. Freaky.
Then there was the helpful plod hiding in the trees up the reefton. You wonder why they were not up lake mountain warning people about the dangerous road, rather than hiding in the trees after a straight. Some screwed up priorities there.
Then a crashed ute/trailer at Warbuton too, that looked pretty gnarly.
When I got home the GF almost didn't let me in the house I was so dusty and I stunk like a dead rat.

What a day! I had a blast, good riding with good blokes! Apart from Juzz's very unlucky (and inacurately gauged) speeding ticket/loss of license putting a bit of a downer on the mood of the day, i didnt want the day to end really!:D
How do the coppers know if there wasnt any overtaking before and after we crossed those speed trap thingos? Meaning, it could've been any1, no cameras to prove it just some reading on the computer saying "some1" was speeding. Load of shit it is. How can they prove there wasnt any overtaking in court? CASE DISSMISSED i reckon......
Thanks for the day guys, top stuff! lets do it again.... I cant wipe the smile off my face!:D

Hi there.... See, this is an interesting predicament.
You raise a valid point - who was it..... If you goto court, you may have an interesting case to review, but likely to lose. Why, someone was doing it...... The officer, in their opinion, believe it was the person he pulled over..... He may have been watching from afar...... In the case of the Reefton, the police usually have a spotter system. Once officer hiding and the other officer pulling people over..... Its a sneaky tactic but works.... Really sorry to hear you lost your license.. that sucks.
We rode through there doing a run to Dargo a couple of weeks ago and did not speed on the straights. Kept the speed at 110km/h and tried to maintain the highest speed around the corners as possible - thats the trick to having fun for me.
Anyway, I was not there so i could be completely wrong......
Once again, sorry to hear about your license.

i was just thinking that perhaps the bike infront and the bike inquestion were over the markers at or near the exact time giving an incorrect reading. see tghe link posted before about the guys that hit them with hammers when a car went over giving a speed of over 1000km's. in the place where it was i find it hard to beleive that he was doing the speed, especially seeing as though he was in the middle of the group. its all on a video anyway so would be nice to see that and reveiw it.
oh and once again the roads were farking great and thanks to those that came along once again. i especially loved the little run up lake mountain even though the htar was a bit slippery it made it feel like i was on a fast bike with it wiggling around

That's not a bad idea Mark. Depending on what happens with yesterdays fiasco I will be ripping all the road gear off it to do a few trackdays and maybe club days if I can find a way to get to the track.
If I have a year to fix it then I might be tempted to ride the wench a bit harder on the track.

There's nothing specific about amphometers, but this page has some good advice on the process you might take if you wanted to object:
http://trafficlaw.com.au/legal.advice.html
It might be worthwhile talking to the guy (or a similar lawyer) to see if there are any large holes in amphometers and what they did. (IE, group of bikes going over at once..)

A couple of posts snuck up the inside, lol.
I need to convert the video & I may need a mac to do that. I had to sit on my head on the couch last night for 23 minutes to watch it on the plasma. The vid is 1080 and it's also upside down as I didn't set the camera up properly. Any mac boffins out there have the right software to convert it?
I also think I'm shit outta luck and may have been doing a $1.50 as I came over the crest. My bad.

We rode reefton because it doesn't have many straights. We rode hard around the bends and backed off when on the straights. I couldnt tell you what speeds we were doing around the bends because i had no time to look at the speedo. I know what u are saying but thats what i do and thats what we all did on sunday. No fun going fast in a straight line. Personally, i think if i rode any faster around some of those bends i wouldnt be here typing this reply post :)

I've been reading a website Owen kindly provided me the URL to. Looks like the only way out is to prove the cops stuff up one part of the process. Only time will tell. When it comes down to it all in the end, shit happens.
The cops picked the best bit, the only half decent straight on Reefton. As the guys saw from my attitude at the time, they are only doing their job and I got done. Bad luck for me. Wrong place, wrong time.
I didn't back off on that straight as I had the cam on and was trying to get closer to the riders in front.
On the flipside I'm pretty stoked we were leaving black lines out of the corners up Lake Mountain though. :)

Rode to work today as my car has had a some issues, and man, that was hot this arvo from craigeburn to doncaster.. ridiculous, carrying 10 litres oil in the backpack too!!! anyway, good for the old tummy, lite'n'easy + half hour in a mobile sauna, sounds good for dropping kg's to me :):)
cheers,
Rod.

For the gents on this ride:
I'm reviewing the footage, for those of you that managed to see the tapes on the road, can you confirm they spanned both lanes of the road?

Yeah they did mate, I saw them quite clearly.

How far away were the tapes from the camp/bbq they had setup?
huskyboy610

I reckon about 500m, on the video Juz goes from crossing the white lines to seeing the cops in about 4sec :p

Thanks Steve.
Owen, I can't see them in the vid but thanks to the PS3 & Azureus I can now play HD video at full res streamed over the network to my plasma in 1080. I'll slow it down to half speed and see if I can spot them on the road. I can't see the tapes in the down converted AVI, too grainy and too many shadows on the road.
There was a car coming the other way which may have tripped the second tape which would have provided an inaccurate reading.
huskyboy610
20-01-2010, 11:10 AM
Could try arguing an inaccurate reading just to get the sentence reduced. Admit you were speeding, being a fool and apologise to the judge, hopefully only get your licence taken away for a few months.

Any footage that you do have can work for you or against you - so be cautious about that.
The footage can potentially show doubt with another vehicle in the frame. And doubt is sometimes enough to have the situation resolved. However, such footage can then be used to accurately rate your speed and potentially others in the frame.
I really hope it works out for you.

I guess the "overtaking" excuse goes out the window then
mmm, film, feel the warmth :)
Did you take the comparison shot with a Digi SLR? It's got a compact camera feel about it. Maybe it's the white husky overexposing it but the DOF seems a lot greater too.

Turn off at Wangaratta and head down the Valley for 80kms.
Gerry (HyperGez) comes across from Midlands which is further away
Neil and a few others come annually,
Its a new world of motarding here
Yes I would show you the way

Charlie, best is to trailer the bikes up to Bright and do day trips. The ride up via Mansfield is fantastic, happy to do that if you fella's are though I prefer the trailer method  Added bonus of a pick up vehicle if things don't go to plan.
I'm happy to organise it.
