hey

Picking up a cheap 02 gsxr 600

haven't ridin it yet
apparentely there is a gearbox problem in second gear, it skips a little but doesn't jump out of gear.

anyone know much about gsxrer boxes

They're generally pretty good, but if you've got a skipping gear then it'll need at least one pair of gears replaced, maybe 2 (if you need to replace both the gear with the worn engaging dogs as well as the receiver if both have been chamferred).

It's a fairly expensive thing to do if you get someone to do it for you, or time consuming if you do it yourself. If you ring suzuki they'll tell you what gear the 2nd gear cluster engages with and what the replacement parts will cost you, plus gaskets etc.

That's not a bad price - it'll probably cost you quite a bit in labour to get it fixed, but if you don't mind pulling motors apart yourself it would probably only cost something in the order of $500 plus a fair bit of time on your part. Give suzuk a ring and scope out some parts prices, and maybe talk to one of their mechs to see if there is anything else that could complicate the process or make it inherently more expensive...

the guy was told 1100 for a full rebuild.

i rode it yesterday, engine is great, bike has pipe and they come standard with steering dampners

it reselects twice, once at about 6500rpm and another @ 10000rpm, apart from that you can ride it around fairly normally.

apparentley its a fairl common issue with suzuki's.

There is something about suzuki 2nd gears, a mate of mine did one on his 1990 gsxr1100 a few years back and i've heard of a few others going too. So it's obviously been a trait for some time. 1100 bucks for a rebuild including parts sounds pretty cheap to me - I'd just call a dealer and double check as they should be able to tell you off the cuff what it would cost to split the cases and replace the 2nd gear cluster...

Too cheap! My YZ cost almost that!

I had a gsxr 1100 that did they a few years ago. It never slipped out, merely slipped out enough to skip teeth. It'll obviously get worse and worse untill you cannot accelerate at all without it immediately jumping dogs.

In my case I had to replace 2nd and 5th gears (they engage for 2nd gear selection), a fork and a shift drum. The slipping in and out obviously stresses the fork and shift drum a fair bit, but was mainly precaution rather then essential.

For money, I think it was about 900 for parts?? Not sure, but I would expect min 500 for the bits. If you can do the work youself it shouldn't cost that much, just a pain to have to split the cases. I think late GSXR have 2 case splits, so maybe it's better (or worse) than a unit with a single split. Dunno, but it is some work. I'd expect a shop to charge you 10 to 20 hours, so maybe $500~$1000. $1100 sounds toward the cheap end :)

Thanks,

I'm not doing the work on it so i am at the mercy of the mechs

obviously no one will give me a definet price.

its a bit of arisk, it could really blow out. Myold mech that fixed my dirt bike reckons at leasdt 1500 and i trust him. then rego + tyres + brakes and a few other bits i reckon cost of bike + 2500.
so at 5500it would be around eight on road.

i can get one for that price

if i got it for 4000 maybe

thanks for the info

I haven't heard of Suzukis doing it before but the 2nd gear problem is a common one with 00,01 R6's. I did a mates R6 for him after he bought the bike from a damaged auction. Parts cost about $300 and it took about 8 hrs all up, although we did a bit of cleaning while the engine was out, changed all the plugs, filters, fluids, checked the carby settings. It ran sweet after that.
