Not sure if this is the correct place to ask around here yet or not but...
I purchased an 09 drz400sm a few week's back and before I get into any bad habit would like to do a few beginer track days to set me on the right path. I figure I'm better learning the right way first time rather than trying to re-learn bad habits. Not so interested in the fastest time around a track just yet, more so all the little things that will keep me safe and set me in good stead for doing that later on.
If anyone here is involved with or has done similar courses around melbourne metro area that they would recomend let us know
Cheers
Simon

Plenty of advanced rider courses out there, some on site, some at tracks.
Champion ride days offer tuition at many of their Broadford trackdays.
Or H.A.R.T do a few different level rider courses http://www.hondampe.com.au/repository/motorcycles/training_licensing/courses.aspx#vic

Just come down to TT in South Morang if you're looking for track riding experience, introduce yourself and ask a few questions.

good advice that..You will learn more about riding properly and more importantly, safely at 1 trackday than you will at 10 Government/Establishment based training centre's.The only good ones are run by motorcycle clubs at racetracks..Cheers:up:

HART and stay upright both do beginner/intermediate/advanced courses and are probably worth a look in. I've got a mate who is an instructor for S/U if you want to talk to someone about what they do, focus on, etc :)

Track days are the best place to start for bike control be it road of MX, but for road craft go to the HART/Stay Upright

Their advanced courses are normally run on tracks like broadford...
The HART intermediate course run at Tullamarine is good to practice bike control in a non-threatening environment. I have done the level 7-6 course 3 times (cost $99 subsidised by roadsafe if you book at the HART open day) and you get as much out of it as you are willing to put in.
I have ridden for many years now and while the concepts were not new to me it's great to get out and practice for a whole day and you do stuff that you would never learn on the track (slow riding, hazard perception, balance) I used it as a practice day to sharpen my existing skills and practice riding smoothly and quickly. Trackdays are great but the temptation is to try and go fast everywhere and often this causes people to try too hard, ride ragged and get frustrated.
I also did the level 8-9 course at Calder but I don't think it's really any better. The facility at Tullamarine has a great motokhana type course and although the speeds are lower you can go completely mental! The level 10 course is held at Broadford.
I don't have any experience with Stay Upright but I've never heard anything bad about them, I believe they hold their advanced courses at Broadford.
Edit. For roadcraft training you really can't beat an on-road based training course like the type run by the Police forces or the AIM in the UK, but they are few and far between in Aus due to public liability and the fact that most Australian road riders think they know everything already. It's all very well to learn the theory in a clasroom or a carpark but you can't hide anything when someone is following you in a real world situation like rush hour traffic.

H.A.R.T. has now moved from Tullamarine to 200 Hume Hwy Somerton.
Ooops, been a while since I've been in Melbourne admittedly!
They only moved a month or so ago.

one of the main reason's I'm doing a track day for a little while, I am hoping to get out to sth morang some time in the next month or two to check it all out and hopefully meet some people. I hadn't thought about club run training/track open days. Seeing as google isn't helping me all that much on this subject which clubs in and around melbourne are motard friendly, have one or two track days a year and a couple of trips away each year?
Sorry for all the stupid new bloke questions.

You've sign'd up to the right place mate.
We do all the above as most other forums are not Motard friendly or related.
