I saw something a while ago about cush drive sprockets(?) Some kind of adaption you could use on a normal dirt bike. does anyone remember seeing this or have any idea about it?

Talon make a standard hub OOTB that uses a cush drive. Not an entire cush like a road bike, but a series of rubber bushes like you get on race bike hubs...
Dunno about adapting an existing dirt hub though

I have also seen sprockets for sale that just have what look like little nylon bushes at he mounting bolts. Supposed to work like a cush drive.

'Prepel' is the cush drive sprokets they are in Melbourne somewhere.

i had a look at those prepel sprockets ... not sure that they would do that much ... looks like only a couple of mm of nylon between the bolts and the sprockets ... would this do much good i wonder??

It should work to dampen the shock. I have seen the KTM cush drives and they only have a very thin amount of rubber(?) also, and apparently it saves their gearboxes

ktm cush drive have close to 10mm of rubber doing the cushioning and about 3 times the width ... so no comparison between the ktm cush drives and the prepel ones :(

The ones I saw at KTM didn't have anywhere near that amount. Maybe where talking about different hubs.

this is a pic of the ktm cush drive rubbers (as they are arranged in the hub) that are on all ktm wheels AFAIK ... i reckon close to 10 mm of rubber cushioning

Cush drives are for blokes who pull themselves with the left hand!...
They got no finesse with the clutch!

If you get an old ('80) KL250, then adapt the drum rear end, you can use the standard cush drive that they come with....but.....you'd have to be a tool!

On the issue of cush drive, I now have one in the XR since the wheel I bought had one. I wasn't particularly worried about not having one since finding out if the gearbox was going to break would have been an interesting experiment  No drama for 11000 kms it had on it.
Anyway, it made a huge difference to how the bike rides. It feels waaaayyyyy smother from low revs. Before you wouldn't use a big gear at low revs for simply the level of snatch and vibration created. Now it's really smooth at low revs, although I guess you don't want to lug it a lot anyway (who cares, it's an XR, they are supposed to treated like crap). Also I am convinced the gearbox shifts more nicely, although that could be largely imagination :)

Sounds goon Antii I have heard the same sorts of things about cush drives. I guess that's why bikes with cush drives have gearboxes last a lot longer..

The KL is still going strong, but that is due to the distinct lack of hp
Still does wheelies  I still get out of control 8)

I bought a Prepel sprocket without the cush drive kit. I wanted to go down some teeth in the back and the prepel was the best looking sprocket I could find. You can purchase the cush drive kit later as an option and add it on to the prepel sprocket. So far I'm very impressed with the quality of the prepel.. it hasn't been treated very nicely and my constant wheelie attempts are really giving it a beating.. it's held up very well. The service from the guys down in Melbourne was fantastic as well, I'd highly recommend them.
