OK you lot, hands up who's entering round 3? (no girly excuses of injury will be accepted either ;) )

It will be my first chance to ride the new bike so I'm expecting the weekend to be interesting to say the least.

End of June at Warwick will be a chilly one.

Who's in ??

Daws
22-05-2009, 12:56 PM
I might be piking on this one, depends how my shoulder is feeling I suppose.

lee#25
29-05-2009, 08:58 AM
Good On you Ash! I bet this round you'll make some good progress on your times, cause you know the drill now. Being relaxed at the event makes a huge difference to how you go on track.

See you out there :D

+1

Relaxed makes for smooth riding which makes for consistent and better lap times.

I'll be entering this round, I'm healing pretty well so far so I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be sorted by Rd3.

I need new leathers and a Helmet though so I feel your fiscal pain Ash.

SM93
29-05-2009, 09:28 AM
and u need to sort out ur suspension

Geezz Paul, Good effort mate! To be honest I thought you'd be out for a couple more months. Thats 5 of us so far, Joe are you in for this one ?
No doubt the wackers will be in plus a couple of the other regulars. Does anyone know if JN is coming out ?

Looking like if will be another good event. Its going to be a long 4 weeks wait .... :happyspin:

TG

I'm in. Already getting itchy feet.

By the way theres a working bee on at North Brisbane this weekend. I'm probably going to be there tomorrow.

Joe
29-05-2009, 10:08 AM
I was going to give this one a miss anyway seeing as I missed the 2nd round so didn't really see the point in racing these southern downs races and it cost too much so got to pick and choose.

Get my cast off today and go into a splint for the next few weeks so I can start to do some things with my hand.
I slipped it of yesterday to re-dress it because it got all sweaty ;) trying to ride my pushy and it feels good i.e. I can ride a pushy with it but that is only resting on the handlebars, not really supporting much weight.
I don't think I would risk moving it around too much or lifting/throttle twisting too soon because I had some ligaments attached and don't want to tear them or something.

Tom, I have been waiting for a working bee for ages (itching to build more tyre walls  ) but now can't because of wrist. I might drop in for a look though.

lee#25
29-05-2009, 10:11 AM
Fair call Joe. Sounds like you are well on the way to recovery though

adam
29-05-2009, 10:52 AM
what bike are you going to be on Lee?

bring that 525 out!

the apes are probably a bit easier to go a bit quicker on as they will cover up some mistakes but a decent single is definitely the way to go for super quick, even around MP

lee#25
29-05-2009, 10:58 AM
Hahaa. It will be my first chance to ride the ape and by then I would have had it in my garage for 6 weeks looking at it, cleaning it and sitting on it making Vroomm Vroom noises. Dont think I'll be able to resist the chance to ride it.
If I end up keeping the 525, I'll use it just for the proper supermoto races and use the ape for the roadrace meetings.

SM93
29-05-2009, 11:30 AM
take it easy Joe, after i did my wrist i rode to early and had no strength in it. I was really impatient and i think i didn't recover as well as i should of

:withstupid:

Secondary knocks during the healing process can be quite damaging with wrists too....

Joe
29-05-2009, 04:41 PM
Got a plastic thing on it now so I can do stuff a bit better i.e. cycle  and should be able to use screw drivers etc. so can do a bit of work next week.
I have virtually full range of movement and no pain at all, doc said it was good. Got to be carful with side to side movement incase hurt ligaments while they are still healing. It's in a splint type thing though so I will be right.
I think getting a screw in it help with strength and healing a lot faster than just setting it in a cast. Plus I was only in a cast for a week so have not lost strength.

If I had to I could race right now :D

Oh what's that ? I have to race ? oh OK if I have to   jokes

4 weeks I'll be good he says.

Ash007
29-05-2009, 06:40 PM
are you going to do the track day Ash?
No, I don't have a car yet and I don't think I'll have one by this round. I can only get there on Saturday & Sunday because my old man is giving me a lift.

Relaxed makes for smooth riding which makes for consistent and better lap times. I think I was too relaxed last time and didn't concentrate on riding fast, some laps for some reason that is lost on me now, I was only using half throttle like I was on a leasurly afternoon social ride. Bit more concretration I think.

I need new leathers and a Helmet though I brought a 2008 thor force helmet for US$100, about a fifth of the cost of buying one here. fits and looks awsome

lee#25
01-06-2009, 01:23 PM
I'm signed up for the Friday track day too now. Since it will be the first ride on the new bike. I'll need a day to work out what all the buttons, knobs and pedals do. If I manage to work all that out in time, I might even try to find a suspension setup ;)

I know that Jovian is in for it, who else is doing the track day too ??

TG

I'm going to have to pike on this one. My collarbone has healed well enough to ride a bike but I don't think it's sufficiently well healed to be able to race, If something unexpected was to happen out on the track I think I would be a danger to other riders and myself.

I'll be there marshalling.

Daws
16-06-2009, 11:16 AM
Bummed I'll miss round 3, my points are going to take a hammering :( The DNF in Rd 1 Race 1 due to a blown fuse is very frustrating!

Points are:
1st - 25
2nd - 20
3rd - 18

Then decrease 1 point for each subsequent position. So even if you have some bad luck, you can still get some good points by finishing the race (Adam - Rd2 Race 3!)

BTW, #96 James Balmain was riding a GSX-R 750, I don't think he should be in our points!

adam
16-06-2009, 11:28 AM
yeah paul, you should come out and just run round, you'll be on for a trophy, jay isnt going out!!

im still so dirty ando beat me in round 1.

TG
16-06-2009, 11:39 AM
Haha with those guys out I'm an outside chance at a trophy (I'm going to get spanked at round 4). First of the S2 bikes :D.

lee#25
16-06-2009, 12:14 PM
Yup dropping a round certainly makes a difference. I'm gutted I couldn't do rd1, might have been a bit further up the top end by now. Guess with 5 guys in front of me not racing this round, possibility of moving up is still on the cards :-k

16-06-2009, 04:50 PM
he never shows up on entry lists, i think they must do a deal with him.

Jay said he was going out so he'll be there so thats 15 which is alright, especially because we are missing so many regulars.

SM93
16-06-2009, 04:51 PM
judging by the number of entries i think we will have the biggest class

adam
16-06-2009, 05:27 PM
i think we've had the biggest class for the every round this year to be honest, we were the biggest at the state titles and im sure we have been at each Southern Downs round.

SM93
16-06-2009, 05:33 PM
we totally rule, its been a great effort for everyone to support it so much. its only going to get bigger out there to

devo
23-06-2009, 01:15 PM

In the past a lot of people have opted out, spent tyres, spent bodies etc.

Good luck to everyone for the weekend. Go hard.

lee#25
23-06-2009, 01:16 PM
Hmm Just checked the timetable 3x 6 lappers and a 7 lap race. Good to get 4 races instead of 3 but I like the format last time with 1x6 1x8 and a 10 lapper at the end. Longer races are fun :D

MarkeeMark
23-06-2009, 01:20 PM
Good luck boys keep it rubber side down.

SM93
23-06-2009, 01:21 PM
give me some feedback on wat you would prefer race wise and i can suggest it. i think we are pretty close to having the right format. i prefer more races but maybe 8 laps per race

lee#25
23-06-2009, 01:25 PM
My starts and first lap is what I really need to work on this time out. You look at the front guys first lap time and they are usually only 3 sec's or so off they're normal times if that. Mines usually 6 or more
I guess it makes a difference though being at the front and having no one or only a couple of guys in front of you to hold you up.

More aggression is required me thinks  :roost:

adam
23-06-2009, 01:33 PM
i'll do the challenge this time round,

quite looking forward to this, trying new gearing and some changes to the rear shock, we'll see if it makes it better :)

new handlebars and a new skid lid too :)

Being back on the grid does make a difference, but not that much. Go hard in your sighting lap, 100% on at least a few corners.

lee#25
23-06-2009, 01:57 PM
Good call devo. I usually cruise the sighting lap. Makes sense if you push on the sighting lap the focus is already there.

Daws
23-06-2009, 02:13 PM
I generally push pretty hard on at least half of the sighting lap (sometimes too hard ), your tyres are warm when you head out of the garage but if you roll around for a lap and then wait on the grid they have had maybe 3.5 minutes to cool down + 2.2km of cold track sucking the heat from them.

I think 8-10 lap races are the go for us, sometimes people get a bit excited in the really short races and that's when accidents happen.

I qualified for the challenge last time but didn't race due to shagged tyres and lack of fitness, I'm going to have to work on the last one! It would have been a lot of fun to get out and mix it up with heaps of different bikes.

Ash007
23-06-2009, 02:30 PM
I think I was the reason for the long start delay on the first race of the Queensland Champs. No one told me you had to go fast on the sighting lap and by the time I got down to the grid I was so rushed I stalled it twice with incorrect gear selection. :) ah.......memories of the first race...............

i was just reminded of the last race meeting,

$1000+ for parts, excluding replacement lid!

throttle cable,
left peg
clutch perch
new gloves
new dark visor
new bars
new grips
new bleed nipple
new bark busters
can of black spray paint ;)

Ash007

According to BOM it's only going to rain friday with clearing & gusty winds the rest of the Saturday. Why not get your track day transfered to the next one in mid july?

TG
24-06-2009, 11:05 AM
I'll be bringing wets to try and appease the rain gods. I did my rain dance/sacifice a few times at Grafton and it wasn't fun.

lee#25
24-06-2009, 12:01 PM
Ash the bom site lists warwick under 'brisbane area' The actual weather forecast for warwick is rain Fri & Sat. I've got no wets so if it rains, I'll sitting in the pits swearing to myself. Close to $400 for the 3 days just in track and entry fees make it a financial wash out if I only get one days riding in :(

lee#25
24-06-2009, 12:05 PM

Good results for Gordon and Adam this weekend, some great racing and all of the motard riders managed to load their own bikes at the end of the day!

I decided not to race as I'm not 100% fit and felt I would be a danger to others if something happened. I spent the weekend running pit exit instead.

great pics Paul!

was a long weekend that one, threat of rain all the time, cold and windy.

rained for morning qualifying, qualified 6th on slicks.

won the first race, in the dry on saturday, sunday it rained again in the morning although was a mostly dry track there were a few wet parts, out on slicks i managed to get in front only to high side myself in one of the wet parts, after winding myself i got back on to finish 13th.

Linden also highsided himself in the same spot and smashed his left knee cap into 3 pieces.

two more races and managed to get out in front and win them both.

cheers everyone for another great weekend, special thanks to Gordy and Tom :)

very sore this morning, knee has swollen up the size of a football, neck and back very stiff.

Good weekend all round and a great field.

I went out on slicks in wet qualifying and had to start from the back of the grid for all the races. Had fun making my way through the field but gave most of the field to much of start in the short races. In the same race Adam went down I also binned it. On the in lap we both cruised back with bent bars & brake levers under the bars hahahaha. Pushed a bit hard in a wet corner on the last lap cause i thought the group behind me were a bit closer than wat they were. Limped over the line.

Had some issues with the bar clamps slipping and moving around on the sighting lap for the next race so I didn't start. Last race was good but my grid position made it hard work to get through the field. Made 2 good passes on the last lap to improve my position. Sort of the weekend that could of been cause i felt really comfortable on the bike but I had heaps of fun and the missus enjoyed watching me fight my way through the field.

My bad qualifying continues but i think i raced fairly well making my way up the field in every race. The CRF is pretty second hand right now after 2 weekends of crashes but it went great all weekend. Congrats to Gordy for his win!

Well.... where do I start the review of my weekend.....pretty much on my arse

Trackday on friday to familiarise myself with the new ape - Go out first session and knock .5 sec off my PB 3rd or 4th lap wasnt to bad until the end of the session. I was going up the hill in 4th gea on the gas, the front came up about a foot off the ground and being that I was in 4th I didnt think anything of it so didnt shut the throttle off. Next thing it just came up and over SO quickly that it spat me off the back, like unbelievibly quickly!! Adam was at the best vantage point to see the whole thing and even he said it just shot up like a rocket. Landed flat on my back on the track, but the worst damage to me was my greeting finger on left hand took a bit of a knock, but no biggy.
The bike came out ok with just some bent bars and a couple of grazes. Just brings it into line with the rest of the boys bikes now ;)

First qual was wet and I had no wets so sat that one out. Second qual was patchy dry at best, but I went out on slicks and qualified on the last row in 13th.
The first race I got the worst start as I was trying to hook out the holeshot dodacky on the line and of course forgot to put the bike in gear before the lights went out  so got to the first corner second to last about 20 metres behind the field. Spent the rest of my race playing catch up and finnished 9th.

The next race got a better start but still got held up which prevented me from being where I should be but thanks to a couple of crashes in front finished 8th.

3rd race got a good start but my qual postion meant I was playing catch up again all race. Finished 10th.

Last race of the weekend I was starting to feel more comfortable on the bike and feeling like I could ride it how I liked. Finished 9th or 10th but got into the 11's which is nearly 2 secs better than my previous PB and was lapping at the same pace or only a sec a lap slower than all the front guys (except adam of course) So had I qualified better I may have been battling with the top 5 guys.

The bike ran great all weekend and once I learnt how to stay on it was a joy to ride. Considering the icey track temps, everyones times where down 1 to 2 secs so I'm thinking 10's should be acheivable next time out :)

Thanks to Tom, John Newton, Paul, Adam, Ash, Gordon, Jovian and Geraldine for all the spare parts, oil, great advice, humor, words of ecouragment (and discouragement ;) ) But most of all, your great company over the weekend!!

I had an absolute ball!!

Like the say you've got to be in it to win it. Congrats to all and I'm so fucking jealous!

You're Jealous? Try standing on pit wall watching them go past lap after lap! Although, I'm glad I didn't go out as one of our mates in a different class, who is recovering from a broken collarbone went out not fully fit, an incident with another rider caused him to crash and he ended up re-breaking the same collarbone.

It's good to Marshall once in a while, it gives you a renewed appreciation of how much effort goes into running a race meet. The motard riders have a good reputation within the club because they can be consistently relied upon to help out if they are not riding .

One of the things I noticed is that the start looks a lot scarier when you are spectating compared to racing. Bikes are millimetres away from each other, wheelying, weaving and generally looking out of control. When you're in the race you have first corner tunnel vision going on and don't really notice (or care) what most of the other people are doing.

Edit - Steve: Linden was pushing Drmsby pretty hard and may have got past had he not fallen off, admittedly Drmsby is on a 15 year old GSX-R 750, it may have been different if he was on his old R6. Hopefully they both make a speedy recovery.

the first lap in our class is crazy, u can't plan it and u never know where u will end up. I decided not to have a strategy as each race was totally different. so fun though, racing is such a blast making decisions on the fly and planning passes etc

drymsbys ok, i drove him home and he was chatting away. Got back to his house and he starts playing the guitar :)

I better give my report.

Q1 - Didn't go out as it was too wet.

Q2 - Went out and ran the whole session, it was a bit slippery but nothing I couldn't manage. qualified dead last though.

R1 - Got a poor start but felt really good and was surprised by how fast i was going until I got aquainted with the pavement at turn 6. Picked the bike up and checked myself and it over to make sure nothing was broken and continued the race when the field had passed. My engine breather tube had poped off and had to reconnect it after the race but thought nothing of it.

R2 - Got a poor start and I had lost all confidence from the first race. Had a huge moment at turn 4 on lap 2 where I slide 3 or 4m sideways where the track hadn't dried out yet. Half way through the race the bike started to run rough. At the end of the race I noticed my boot was full of oil and sure enough my valve cover rubber gasket had blown out.

R3 - Didn't start

R4 - Didn't start

Overall enjoyed the weekend alot more than the last and came to the conclusion that I need to be on tyres better than the maxxis to put faster times down and i am going to have to change my oil breather catchment system or my gasket or hose will keep blowing off. A 10mm hose inlet shouldn't have a 3mm outlet. Good news was that my engine had only lost 100ml of oil so nothing should be damaged.

It will probably be my last race weekend for a while as I want to run all practice/coaching days I can and have my times under 1m 20 sec before I race again.

Yay for consistantly being there and pedalling around.

Had a really off weekend and being wet wasn't really helping. Not really sure what was wrong but you get that. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy a second set of wheels (getting tyres changed sucks ass).

Round 4 should be a good time. I'm going to have to work my ass off to stay in that position. Who knows - a lot can happen in 3 months.

It seems the trash talk has taken a while to get started! I look forward to getting out on track with you Lee! ;)

As Tom saliently points out, a lot can happen in 3 months, who knows I may even manage to shake this habit of crashing on the straight bits! I'm aiming for consistent flat 1:08's next round (weather permitting).

Good work Tom, I told you you'd be on for a podium position!
