View Full Version : Dyno Questions
So i finally got the bike booked in to go on the dyno for the 27th December to get tuned properly.
Is there anything i should do or check before i take it in? I have a couple of different front and rear sprockets that i'm playing with, does changing sprockets change the dyno read out or is all that data plugged into the computer before it is run? I'm thinking of putting a smaller front sprocket on, but don't want to get a false horsepower reading.
Got it booked in for suspension work on the 4th January and ordered the last of the brake components yesterday, so it looks like i'll have a finished Tard in about 3 weeks (after i fix the scratches from the last crash. . . oops).

Gearing shouldn't affect the dyno result, it should get taken into account with all the other parameters such as temp, humidity, etc etc that affect dyno results. All you need to make sure is that its in good order, clean air filter, good chain & sprockets (esp important) and chain slack adjusted normally.
Just make sure you get the print out of the results on a disk or something so you can post them up 8)

Tom,
I live in sydney and was thinking about getting the KTM 640 dyno tested but it wasnt going to happen till the new year after a flat side was installed.
I have already done some homework on the suspension and talked to a few fitters and suspension guru's till they told me "to piss off and stop wasting my time unless your buying somthing"
This may be of some help in your quest for the ultimate suspension set up.
These are there words to me :D
Point 1
You need to not only have to change the rear spring, it needs to be revalved inside. This needs to be set so that the sag and the preload are correct for your weight.- This means a bit of self realisation of your real weight.
Point 2
You need then to get new springs for the front forks and provide new valves to the existing shocks.
Point 3
You can only do the front once you have corectly fixed the rear.
Some guys told me that they would only tighten up the preload on the rear and fitt new springs to the front + valves=$600. That sounded good to me a fix that was affordable. :)
Other guys have properly explained the benifits of fixing the rear correctly, by this i mean a spring for your weight, changing the oil as by now the old stuff is buggered, re valving to assist the compression and dampening and get the correct speed of the piston action, new font springs and re valving, advice on set up, a spin around his track to see if you are comfortable with the work followup advice and help with settings=$800.
Benifts of setting the rear up properly, not running wide out of corners as the back wallows under power and weight transfer.
As for the Dyno, can you let me know how much and where you went to get it done.
Hope this helps.
Agent34,
Thanks for the info, i know getting info out of techs is like pulling teeth. Luckily i got my last bike done by Nick at Teknik motorsport and it was perfect. This time around i'm going the whole hog with springs, valving, oil and seals front and rear for about $1,200. I trust Teknik to set it up right, i just tell him the kind of riding i do and he does the rest.
As for the dyno, it's going to Sydney Dyno at Kensington (9662 8662) and he is charging $150/hour including his labour to tune it and the dyno. If you just want to do a power test run i think it's a bit cheaper. There's another guy in Bondi somewhere but i lost his number.
I think i'm doing both the suspension and the tuning the expensive way, but i want it done right, i tried to do my brake setup on the cheap and have had nothing but trouble since i started (and i still haven't got the big caliper and master cylinder setup on the bike after 3 months of trying).
I'm hearing of more and more Sydney riders on here, as soon as i get this bike finished we'll have to book in a track day with Mark Avard, supposedly he's got access to Eastern Creek go kart track, Oran Park supermoto track and a go kart track near Newcastle!

Tom,
It wounds like that you have the right advice on hand!
The other guy is Ractech and he is also at penrith,Wallacia i think.
Another bunch of guys that run Motard days are; http://www.circuitbreakers.com.au/
They run days at Oran Park and Wakefield Park.
In fact Wakefield park is a great track for Motard bikes to race on as it is longer that the usual Motard track, but too tight for more powerfull road bikes to get a good run on. So if you are thinking of doing a bit more road racing come on down. The price is very reasonable for the full day. Wakefield has not dirt section.
I am ordering a new Keihin after christmas and will be putting it in and taking it to the Dyno to see if i can screw a few more bits out of the motor.
The next step was the exhaust, but that is another storey.
let us know how you go with the dyno and the tuning.
cheers.
