I need to mount some spare fuel on my SXV i was thinking in this grove on top of the front guard? Does anyone see a problem with this or recommend anywhere else?

how much fuel?
The extra weight on the guard that has minimal bracing and not frame under it, may fatigue after all the normal vibrations? I don't know how strong the front guard on them is though.
Some put just behind the seat under a cargo net. rear guard can support more weight due to the frame underneath.

1L.
Close to a kilo, including the container after the density conversion (guessing here).
I think it might be a bit much for the front fender too.

1L.
oops forgot that bit in the header.
about a kilo gram
1L is about 800+ grams, i will not discribe why and shall try and hide the geeky side lol

I only want 1L so not much weight.
With the under seat exhausts the heat makes it get real warm back there and there is nothing close to being flat, besides finding tie down point that won't burn through the cargo net...

good point, doesn't leave many places then. maybe mounting to the side of the fork, next to the head light :?

Yeah sweet might try that, then i can run 2 litres even better lol

Depends on how much you would be using it and how keen you are basically but for a 'street knobber' like me that would be looking for added fuel range I would get myself 2 matching B & B bashplates or the likes and weld them together using malleable alloy strip effectively making a 1.5" deep pan the whole shape of the bashplate.
Its FI so a pump can be installed and a filler spun up in billet alloy.
Polish it and most people wouldnt pick it,
Would hold around 4 litres.
If its for the odd occasion and you only want the litre slip, a reinforcing piece of tensile alloy under the guard bent to shape just as a support, and go with the guard option.

Stick a 690 SMC 'subframe' on it, it's a 12 litre tank. ;)

Its just for the odd ride so won't be a permanent fixture, Cheers people i will try a few options.

1 litre will be fine on the front guard!

Do a test run around the block with a carton of milk and a bit of gaffa tape.
Do some whoolies to see if the front guard snaps off.
1 lite of fuel is .75 of a kg or 750 grams approx plus container.
1 litre will be fine on the front guard!
You doing wheelies yet? Just kidding.
Mount it sideways, tight against the headlight then.
If anything put some larger washers under the fender, and a freakin chimpanzee could swing off it. It'll be right though.
Is this a one way trip or do you have to save the container? I would split the load in half and throw something to drape over the seat and hang over rear number plates . Let the seat take the weight.

I would like to keep the container one of those metal camping jobs, its only for emergencies on some of the longer rides with no fuel stops with in 90Km's, front fender its is with some larger washers and a small brace.
Thanks all

2 L plastic coke bottle in a nice tight fitting back pack, you wont even notice its there and it wont effect handling or be under attack from stones.
Neil bought a fuel tank that mounts to the rear seat, that might be worth checking out. Probably try Ballards. Heat isn't too much of a problem if it's in a suitable container.

Firstly, fuel will destroy the plastic in a coke bottle in a couple of hours.
Secondly, if you stack it with a lumpy bag on your back the risk a spinal injury is huge.

I had a high speed getoff in the bush , over the bars , felt like Superman for about 20 feet , thank fuck I had a lumpy backpack on,pretty sure it saved my back ....
Up to you , just my opinion....

Same, 4 for me.
Still, I wouldn't ever carry anything hard on my back. That could be worse than landing on a rock.....

3L camelback should do the trick. Make sure you remove the mouthpiece to avoid any accidental inhalation or ingestion though.

I"m pretty sure fuel will eat a Camel Back bladder.....

small metal (alloy or other) brace under guard and tie it onto the fork i recon. seems like the safest, easiest option to me, and you can just leave the brace on..

Just a thought... what about a pushbike waterbottle cage, I'm pretty sure a 1L MSR aluminum fuel bottle would fit in.

You just be careful with your Tuneboy mate!
You infinite quest to have the most powerful tard will also give the shortest fuel range of the lot of us!

It's not Max Max days just yet. Give me more power!!!
It's only a quest to have 1 more horsepower than a 550. :P
Now, I better go find that dyno day thread and give it a nudge. ;)
My 550 used to put out over 80hp if that counts. :P

Shouldn't be to hard with 100+cc more should it? Laughable if it didn't ;)

if you can trust the manufacturor they put out 105....but the suzuki is only 2 years younger than me :P i reckon they'd scrape over 80 together
anyway. having a short range is all thats stopping me putting too many k's on the ktm

Going back to the carrying fuel on the front fender thing, you can buy an enduro toolbag that straps onto the front fender. I use one to carry tools, tubes and 1L of fuel in a oil container when I go trail riding. It hooks on to the edges of the fender and pulls tight so you don't need to drill holes and can take it on and off easily. You could get two or three litres in there if that all you wanted to carry. Never had an issue with it stressing the fender even when jumping stuff.

Dean-- still a mudguard here, much better concept than a thing to fend off Americans !!
But 3 litres on your front guard, no
Bottles in your camelbak, I know a man who does and he's happy
I use a bumtank (or try googling nomad)
4.5 litres sits at back of seat, Don't think Ape exhaust would be a problem, on some of my bikes I have to have it a bit forward to clear exhaust but easy to do.
Original q asked for 1 litre, reckon you're taking it a bit fine, I love rolling into petrol stations but hate pushing !!!

dont know if ya can get one for your bike and going back to the front fender ,but this front fender brace from acribis might help but probly not i dont know really just a thought.?
somthing along these lines

I've never put 3 litres in mine, but the size of it would allow if so inclined but that is a fair bit of weight. That 1 extra litre has saved me on at least one occasion when the guy leading the trail group lost his map . Just enough to get me into the servo at Warburton.
I just personally dont like the idea of carrying fuel on me. Over the bars, and landing on your back, or getting stuck under the bike with the header pipe melting it's way through the backpack....
Probably not an issue riding on the road though.
This guy's got the idea - load it up. That's what I use on the front fender/guard/mudguard/wheel-spray-stopper -

Get a flexible bladder and throw it in the bottom of a back pack. You would hardly notice a kilo on your back, and you dont have to worry about your aux tank rubbing on something and it bursting into flames.

Thanks all, but no rubber or plastic container will hold fuel for longer than few hours!! and no way carrying something hard in a back pack....
I like the idea above i will brace under the front fender and i have bought a pushy drink holder which i'll mount up front to give some extra support and run a stretchy carry net over the top.
What about:
http://www.nomadtanks.com.au/Tanks.php
Otherwise have a look in here, lots of links to specialized flexible fuel bladders, a bit bigger than what you are looking for though, but some good ideas.
