View Full Version : Husky went pop - pics
I mentioned this sometime ago in my race report from Morgan Park but here's some pics of my Husky engine after I received it back from the shop.
Quotes are way off the scale to rebuild it, even the cheapest quote would push the cost of the bike up to the price of a much newer model.
Basically one of the inlet valves snapped (in top gear) and made a mess of the piston and head. So it's up for a new piston and head and 4 new valves - add in the labour and you've got an expensive engine.
Options are:
1. Buy a second hand engine from a TC, TE or SM450 - But there doesn't seem to be any (I've checked breakers, dealers and Findapart.com.au) and the replacement engine's history will be unknown.
2. Sell the motard kit complete (wheels, brakes and reworked suspension) to someone who has a TE or TC450 that they want to set up as a quick change motard
3. Buy a Husky TE450 and use my SM bits to make a quick change motard - this could be a good option as I was going to buy an enduro bike too.
4. Ditch Husqvarna and buy an SXV550! But then there would be no challenge in the road races!

Edit - A man can only take so much carnage so I thought I'd better include a pic of what the bike used to look like just after I finished putting it together... Happier days...

Ring Peter @ Road and River and discuss the matter / options with him.
I would also lean towards a new TE purchase and use the SM stuff myself as a quick SM specific changeover including suspension much what Liam (KTM39) was doing with his 525 before the new 530 came along.
Pete will have all the best angles to persue to both options.
I think there is still too much 'good' bike to ditch it and start over with something else myself Paul :?

OMFG that sucks so bad. Sorry to see that. This is why I just sold my 250F, I was paranoid of something like this happening (even though it was probably unlikely with what I do with it). After the bottom and top end rebuild the valves were about the only worry, but a valve kit was like $500, without labour. Just felt it was a bit of a time bomb cause it was getting on a bit, and if it did happen, I would have to hang up the helmet for a looooong time.
Back to a two-stroke for a while, where there's nothing above the piston but a lump of metal

If you can find a cheap motor, go that way.
Otherwise, buy a new(ish) TE enduro, keep your SM bits to convert and just swap them over, then sell everything else that you can salvage on ebay. That would be a good option as you could keep dedicated forks/shock valved for sumo and run enduro or stock valved forks for offroad
Or, find another SMR on the street and run over it with your car, then offer the poor guy $50 for it :lol2:

or just steal his engine while he isn't looking

After asking to borrow his tool kit and asking whether it had an "engine unbolting spanner" in it :lol2:
Ooh - i cant look away. Thats nasty.
Looks like you were breading wolverines in there.
I reckon, part it out or buy a TE, Paul.

Its not that bad Joern,
A bit of a valve lapping and shes good to go
TE Paul ;)
Fuck the huskies. I don't think the TE is what you want for your Cape York trip, and I don't think the SMR is what you want for the motard/RR. I'd go option 2. Unless you can get a new motor for bugger all of course...

Hi Paul,
You could always buy the race ready, race prep'd, proven winner SXV 550 that is for sale up here in Queensland.
Maico 949
or an 07 crf450 all prepped up ready to gpo with 2 sets of wheels

I think that head is repairable, is the bore damaged or just the piston???
You may get away with just gaskets, piston & $400-500 on the head.
Get in contact with Rams Head Service in Windsor NSW, they do awesome work (factory teams, sprint cars etc.) & will quote first.
If you want to save some freight send it down with Devo or Joe as I will see them over the weekend.
Rams is only 10min. from me.

Thanks for all the useful [and not so useful!] advice, I also spoke to Pete at Road and River and discussed the options with him - He was very helpful and only once tried to sell me his SM450RR!
Dave - I have already spoken to a cylinder head specialist up here who comes very well recommended. He's of the opinion that it is repairable but the costs of the other parts start to add up... Genuine husky valves @$240 each!! Obviously the price can be lowered by using quality aftermarket parts (stainless valves @$80 each sound better) but the figure for the rebuild will still be well over $3000.
Gordon - I thought you were going for that "special" 450 and swapping your engine over?
Your just making excuses to yourself on why you need to buy a new bike.
Cheers Brian
Hey Paul...
Longshot but will the 510 fit your frame?
This might be a good source, I cant see anyone silly enough to buy this at the price its at...

FRAME UNDER NEATH HAS FOLDED IN - COULD POSSIBLY BE PULLED STRAIGHT   :?

that would turn in so quick now that it has a zero degree rake :lol2:
Thanks JB, AFAIK the 510 engine will fit straight in.
I don't want to pay that money for it, I'll email the seller and express my interest.
Strange why the brake caliper is hanging off... I wonder if the rider forgot to tighten the caliper mounting bolts and that's what caused them to run into something?

Wont roll with a dent like that in the rim Paul.
Just wont pass the caliper.
I wouldnt mind the caliper as an upgrade,
Fuck the bike

Shit, how strong are the front forks. The frames bent and the wheel has a major dent in it and the forks, at least externally. look ok.

I bet it's not the first time it's happened. A shop left the bolts loose holding my old mans front wheel in recently, it could have been carnage but he noticed it before it turned to shit.
Hmmm, a few interesting options here, I personally would be a bit Husky shy after what happened to your bike, not wanting to be seen bagging Huskys (too much ;) ), I guess any high revving similar capacity 4T.
The ebay one is too dear for the damage but someone will probably buy it and get a new frame for it. I sold a few KTM frames back in 06 and they were typically just under $2k each, I wonder if Husky frames are in the same ballpark?
That seller has a heap of bikes, he has a GSXR1000K5 that I was looking at months ago, it would make a good fighter with flat bars and the like, I'm semi surprised no one has bought that one yet but it needs a new swingarm and forks plus whatever else is hidden.
You really have to closely inspect these evilbay damaged bikes first and do a proper quote. This bloke has all these write offs for a reason, the repair quotes are at least > 50% of the value of the bike.
i recon Husky Parts are worth more than a whole bike. If you got it for 4 it might be worth it to fix your big.
U could adapt all the parts off that bike and register the 04. flog the other bits. I don't reckon its to bad of a deal. Later model engines are pretty good to.

That head looked very similar to the mine, when is shit itself at Winton a couple of months ago! Pop.... then $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But mine dropped an exhaust Valve, and I wasn't fully tapped at the time, but still required, new, head. barrel, piston, rings, valves, springs, Cam, con rod, Main crank bearings, cam chain & tensioner etc the list goes on, but its painfull! Really thought of just updating, but I still had to re-build it! now its all new! =) Better last!
lucky it's a Honda! Not as bad as the Euro stuff or yamies!
