View Full Version : Tyres 4 Husky smr450
Hello,
hows it going?
I am getting a new set a tyres for 04 Husky SMR450. At this point of time i am looking at pilot powers and gpr70. I seen first hand the powers are very good but the gpr70 are lighter and were the control tyre for production bike racing and i have heard good things about them.
any info would be great,
By the way in live in Brisbane, so if there are any queensland motarders out there say hello,
Cheers

Unless your going to the track avoid the pilot powers they sucked on the street big time.
Neil says good things about gpr70',I used em on my 400 roadbike and liked them...
We are ALL using Avon Distanzia's and love them
My compo for them against the pilots, no warm up time!!!,ok on the dirt, slide oh so smooth. and they are cheaper  AND great in the wet!!!
The pilots are way dearer, wore out very fast 3.8k on the rear, and are death traps in the wet
whats the tyres Dicky runs?
Avon Distanzia's are they like semi slick like the gpr's and powers? I was also thinkin rennesports. i mainly just ride in the mountains but i hope to do a track day soon , very limited oportunites in QLD. I like riding in the wet.

The distanzias actually have quite an aggressive, large blocky tread pattern. But they do grip like shit to a blanket. I found they took a little getting used to, as they turn into corners a bit strange, but i'm sold now and will stick with them for sure.
The GPR70s are excellent tyres, I've run around phillip island on them on my 250 track bike and they hang on like nothing else. But they're basically a slick with a few grooves in them. The distanzia will hook up on the loose stuff and the gravel better for sure, although the gpr will likely give you a little extra grip on the tar. But unless you're at 10/10ths and scraping your knee everywhere, you wont use the extra grip.
The Pilot Powers are good too - Jake, you didn't have a power I don't think, you had a Pilot Race H2 didn't you? Those things are race only, have NO grip when cold and are diabolical in the wet. I think muzz tried some too and said the same. The powers are fine tyres, but are heavier than the GPRs and Distanzias, and don't offer any more grip.
I'd go try the distanzias myself, but failing that go the GPRs

I run Rennsport RS1s on my KTM640, they are excellent in the dry but are basically a slick with very little tread, so wet weather performance is not exactly confidence inspiring.
The stock tyres on the KTM are Pirelli MT60R Corsa, they are damn good wet or dry, tar or gravel. I like them a lot.
dicky.
My mate just brought a set of pilot powers for his LC4 and has a brand new pilot sport front. i was thinkin that i didn't really mind the 207's cause they moved round a bit and were easy to slide on. i just want a bit more agressive profile so i was thinkin I might just buy a rear pilot sport. has any one had much exprience with them ? If so how do they compare with the dunlops? It's also a cheap option and i don't do track days.

And they stick like shit to the proverbial blanket...
The big sizes are about to go on the WRF for road evaluation as they are a specialist racing tyre and not DOT approved as far as I know...

They are wets Ash so almost no warm up required... ;)
muzz did you ever try those Heidenaus motard slicks ?????????
By the way, i was chatting to Mr Dunlop at the track on Saturday and he showed me a set of Dunlop supermoto slicks (even have supermoto written down the side of them) that are just coming into Aus. They're a 160 rear and a 120 front and going for about $395 a pair, which seemed quite reasonable when compared to bridgestones.
I'll be trying them out when i wear out my current set of bridgestones and will give a report later.

No I didnt get to try the Heidenaus.
I had wanted to get them fitted for this summer series of track days, and have just fitted a new rear...
They are good tyres I have used them on the mini's as mini moto tyres and in offroad in the MX print...
Getting something that is 150 (Heidenaus are close I think 155mm overall) sized is the biggest problem so you dont get the pinching...
5" rim is the answer, but when there is a glut of 4.25's out there already you would think you would get something close to the 150mm.
Michelin Pilot Race is the best I have come across for grip for the 4.25" rim in the 150 specific size for track use...
Shinkos are a 150 slick but as good as a Maxxis.
Maxxis have a 165/50-17 wet that is really 148mm and fits grouse, but too low in the profile for the lean angles required and bits of shit anyway, unless its for dirt track then its OK...
395 a pair sounds awesome !!!!!!!!!
I got a price of 230 front, 250 rear for the dunlops
I am in two minds about what i should be running on mine due to rear tyre size.
I was thinkin of running shinko's but the reaction is pretty mixed to them. I was thinkin dunlop slick front, gpr 70 rear or michelin slick front, power race rear.
I am not real keen on putting a big tyre on a small rim
270 a pair for shinko's just wish i new what they were like........
if the are slicker than gpr70 i would be interested, thinkin of being a test mule for em...............
Last thing i want is have my bike slide along the ground......
decisions, Tom do you know anyone qld who can get cheap new racetyres ?

It comes down to really if you are prepared to compromise the argument, Sticky vs. Price...
@ $270 for the pair of Shinkos, and given they are going on a motard so not going to last long anyway, would you not compromise the lean factor in the initial try out and give em a whirl?
The others are a known commodity in many regards, but so much dearer and for what advantage really unless you are getting at it at the fastest the bike can go, and at a competition level.
I will give them a go at that price, but cant get them here for that!
Nowhere near that price in fact, or they would be getting shredded at the trackdays here instead of a Distanzia at a shit load more, when they are my street tyres too...
i read some stuff on the shinko on smjunkie, but I think alot of the guys were talking about the road tyres not the actual motard slicks which are actually new.
I would have to think they would at least be as good as gpr70's.
How much can you get them for in Vic ?
I will decide on wednesday

In Victoria they are as dear as the rest, or just about...
Certainly not worth the experiment at the price here thats for sure.
Like $200 a rear or thereabout I think..
If you can get them at $270 @ pair, grab them...
My understanding is that the Shinkos are the old Yokohamas that I used nearly 20 years ago with the new technology silica rubber compounding.
If that is the case they would be fine for the price......
i do a little bit of work for yokohama and he gave the wrap on shinko's and like companies.
basically they are just small companies that the big ones help with tech and investment cash. shinko's do have ties to yokohama.
Well if they alright, maybe we can organise to get some sets sent down for u guys.
plus they come in 150's. the jackson race team uses them on there yamaha. I think he goes pretty well to.

Get 'em fitted up mate ;) ...
For $270 like I said you cant go too wrong.
And yes, I would be interested to know what they would be worth freighted to Wangaratta..
Does the distributor you deal with want an outlet in Northern Victoria is the next obvious question, bearing in mind we are discussing this over a forum that this month has 120000 hits and about to become a buying group entity with ACN ?

ive got a pilot power on the back of the DRZ ... cost about the same as the GPR70's and seems to grip fine ... good street tyre ... seems to wear really well compared to the gpr70 ... id definitely consider one for road riding
The guy is a bit of legend in Brissy for cheap tyres. I am not exactly sure what the deal is. I have been tryin to find out where and who they were for ages. When i go there i will suss it all out. Its not a bike shop. I have heard there are massive que's out the front on saturdays
I would think no more than 30 bucks,

Thats the compromise I'm talking about.
If you are at the level of competition requiring the best available and have the budget to buy good ones, then you wouldn't buy the Shinko's.
But for the average racer they would be fine until you were outriding them..

I think thats why they use "control" tyres so that even the guys with the money don't have the advantage of the "better" tyres. At the pinicle of motor sport I don't believe in controls but lower level I'm all for it!!
if the are slicker than gpr70 i would be interested, thinkin of being a test mule for em...............
Last thing i want is have my bike slide along the ground......

Not sure about QLD, but in Sydney the Bridgestone and Dunlop importers show up at the races with a truck full of tyres and sell them at just above wholesale rates, hence the cheap prices.
Mr Dunlop is from Monza imports, Mr Bridgestone is from Whites racing products. Give either of them a call and see if they have a truck going to any tracks in QLD.
Tom.
