I just picked up a 96 Dr650 & plan to do the motard thing, been a long time between bikes, last one i had was a Dr600 like 20 years ago.
I had my heart set on an Xtx660, unfortunately my finances wouldnt allow $9000, this little Dr cost me $3500. Its a bit shabby but with some tlc she'll scrub up. My plan is to put a 4.5 rim on the rear and use the original to put on the front, since its already a 17. Already has a decent size disc up front so wont bother with that till money is available. Would love to hear from others on ideas to improve performance.

Shes not the latest & greatest but shes mine.

Good stuff mate! :up: Really, its rims and tyres and you're good to go. The big DR isn't going to be a hp monster at any stage, but maybe play around with the gearing a bit and work out what suits it best, then go have fun :snigger:

I've got a similar thing happening with a 2003 model. I'll post some pictures when I get the wheels on in the next week. Just for your interest including changing the standard pipe to a Staintune (which I heard varies between 5kg and 7kg lighter - complete system) I have managed to take off a further 7kgs of stuff that is just not needed.

Of course it doesn't make the DR a WR or KTM beater but it gives the big thing a better chance. Some better springs are the final piece on my list (for now) and will just make it a better all round bike.

Thanks fellas. I do realise she's not going to be a record breaker, but she can certainly be improved. Have ridden the KTM 640 moto, very nice, vibrates a lot and Kosts Too Much. :( The Yamy Xtx660 is also very nice, however it also suffers from cost too much. :( My budget allowed me the dr, a little bit slower & not as flash, but still good enough for the big grin factor. Thats what it's all about :D Bing, does the staintune sound good.?

A full pipe and jetting will pick it up heaps!!

I recently rode with a older xr600 and it was nicely done up.

The Staintune is a good thing. It came with the bike and it is a full system. Bit loud but I do have the baffle for it. I'm a big fan of the DR - nice, simple bike that is okay at most things without being to narrow focussed. Plus it's an easy bike to work on!

Bing, did you relace the rims yourself, is it hard to do, i'm thinking of just buying the rims & spokes & doing it myself. Dont know how succesful i'll be but wont know if i dont have a go. :) Any body else here done it?.

Its not that hard so long as you understand there is different length, inside and outside spokes...
Once you get the first couple indexed away you go... ;)

Howdy, a bit slow on this me :oops:
I've got a '94 DR650...the staintune was way loud somehow for mine even with the baffle in, so switched to a 250 baffle for the same muffler out of earbleeding necessity...still a big power/weight improvement over the stock thang. Also dynojetted, K & N, top of airbox cut off (side off way too noisy), chopped sidestand, braided lines, rexfelgen rims to stock hubs, acerbis tard guard, one tooth down on the front sprocket (recommended). The rim swap was a botch job courtesy of Action M/C in wentworth ave, sydney...1 month and still needed a trip to the wheel builders to get the offset right on the rear...plus they put the wrong sized rear tyre on the rear rim (I won't go into it all, will just get me cranky)...anyways, now running the correct sized michelin pilots (love 'em).
Still a lardy beast but it goes OK, is totally trouble free, and even made the trip from Canberra to Sydney recently (OK, so I lost feeling in my fingers around Goulburn :shock: ) 8)

Here it is. 2003 DR650 supermoto. Discs by Aussie Disc, HEL lines, Taper bars, Trailtech speedo, Staintune full exhaust, Ducati Monster front indicators, Excel rear rim with std hub, DR650 rear rim laced to std front hub - tyres 110 front/150 rear. About 15 kgs removed from bike (including weight difference with full system) All for a bit of fun on the road. Fun without high maintenance!

Shyte, if I can do em, they must be easy!

Just be gentle, but increasing pressure on the brake until you feel the rear get up, then you can maintain the pressure (to start with) or keep it going (when you are good at it). Warm the tyre up first if you are not confidant, but just be gentle and get a feel for it. And most important of all....practice at every posible chance, like when there is any other bike around, children watching, etc! opps almost forgot, if Muzz is trying to pass you, get that back wheel up in his face to block him.

Ok so iv'e been out practicing my wheelies but havent had any luck with stoppies as yet. I must admit i only practice when i'm going to work(stoppies) or leaving work (wheelies). Had a 180 km ride on the weekend in amongst a heap of harley riders. Will cruise on 120-130 no probs, i'm guessing that the sprockets are not standard, but top speed was 155. I have a problem with low down power, cant get the wheel up in 2nd gear, 1st is no probs. I am never taking this bike back to the bike shop, i took it in to have the carby cleaned and get it to run a bit better and they taped up the airbox and put the standard bloody jets back in. If i'd known he was going to do that i would have said no way. My mistake

Went on the poker run, started Ky west, to Rochester, Toulene, Rushworth then ended in Merrigum, nearly 100 bikes. Was only one full motard there, a Honda, possibly xr650 with a huge tank. The stops were too long and the rides to short but a good day was had by all.

If you are riding with Harly poofs, you have to be the biggest show off you can possibly be. When they are all stopped talking about flower arranging, you should be out working on thoes wheelies and stoppies.

With the wheelies, give the throttle a quick sharp blip, then back off completly and then wrap it on hard to full, while giving the bars a smooth tug and you should have wheelies in second no probs.

If that fails, we go to stand up method (it works for my 5hp KL250 in third!!). Stang on the pegs and bounc the bike up and down, like you are trying to bunny hop it. OK you have made yourself look silly, so you have to now do a good wheelie!!! So how we do it is, stand and then compress the suspension (with your legs by doing the above bounc, but only do it once), while doing this close the throttle. As the bike stops compressing the suspension, snap the throttle open to full and give the bike a gentle tug on the bars while leaning back and standing back up. You will need to practice to get it fluent, but it comes easy after time.

If you have pllion pegs (can use boot back across seat if not), you can put on leg on the pilion peg and the other on the normal peg (i keep my right foot covering the rear brake {once bitten twice shy!}). Do the above bound method and then as you are gassing it up, transfer all your weight to the leg on the pillion peg, to get that weight back and make the front end lighter. You can also help balance the bike when it is high (near balance point) by changing how you have your weight distribution between the normal peg and pillion peg.

I hope this helps and I expect a regular update.

We can have an impromptu wheelie and stoppie school somewhere there, piss easy, and I reckon there would be the odd check bank or irrigation channel we could throw a few tricks off too. :lol: ...

I used to be a wheelie king back in my dr600 days, lift it in 2nd & keep it up all the way to 5th gear, close on 1/2 a kilometre. Just a matter of getting used to the way its setup, i could get my bosses dr up in 2nd, but as i say this one is geared a bit different, with a bit of time i'm sure i'll work it out, then i'll have to get pics to prove it :D Coming up 3 weeks now since i've had it home, slow learning curve, can't afford to fall off :oops:

Understanding the wish not to bin it with costings for my WRF to date reaching the $22000 mark for the buy, build, and modify/repair :shock:

Wheelstands are like anything else you've done well before Danger, but without practice and a familiar bike it will take a few attempts before you get the feel again mate... ;)

You need to speak to Steve he used to do 90+ kmh stoppies on the standard xr400 brakes, now he has a DRZ with a 320mm disc, so it should be 150kmh stoppies! Sorry it's an ag bike so we'll stick with the 90+..

I'm going to get paid out onthat one! :D

Just a couple of rims is all you need ... especially if your existing ones got dented or blemished in some way that, though may not outwardly visible, means they should be replaced for safety's sake... ;)

It's been a while but I've added a couple of new items to the DR650. It now has 2002 DRZ250 forks (bought from the US Ebay - delivered to Aus - AUD$250!), heated grips from Ballards (I'm soft and winter is cold) and few other other little niceties.

The DRZ forks go straight in but I had to make my own caliper adapter to allow for the bigger DR650 discs. The heavier fork springs I had in the std forks went straight into the DRZ forks. I raised the forks to allow for the extra travel and it runs great. I've only used them in the dirt so far but I expect similar gains for the road. I may be polishing a turd but that turd gets shinier every day :D
