i thought i might ask you knowlegable bunch too

Ok so im almost ready to get her back on the road but she still has a problem with the front brake light switch. this one seemed to start out of the blue, but couldve been caused by any number of tinkerings.

the back brake light switch works the front dosent. tail light works fine.

a the final connector before the brake light there are 3 wires going in

Black + white (i think earth)
Brown
White + black

i have run the multi meter over it under diferent conditions to get theese voltages

----------------
*fr brake off, rear brake off, lights on = tail light works
B + W - 0v
Brown - 12V
W + B - 0v
---------------

---------------
*fr rake off, rear brake ON, lights on = Brake light works
B + W - 0V
Brown - 12V
W + B - 12V
---------------

-----------------
*fr brake ON, rear brake off, lights on = Brake light not on , tail light on
B + W - 0v
Brown - 12V
W + B - 12V
-----------------

This is what is really confusing me. after going through all the switches and circuty all the way too the last connection before the tail light both front and back brakes are producing the same.

...so i would think that the brake light would be getting the same signal and working for both....but it dosent light up for Front brake.

so im stumped

Any ideas or other things to check?????

Cheers in advance for the help

Thanks
Ben

Maybe check the continuity from the B + W to the frame or battery in all 3 situations, if you don't get continuity in the last one where it's not working properly then you might have an earth leak somewhere.

Is the front brake light switch just rooted?

Maybe the front brake switch works on closed curcuit and the rear brake switch works on open ciruit.

I could also be talking shit too. Confused yet? ;)

all of those voltages were tested against the frame....if that makes sense.

i would think if the "same" continuity results are getting to the junction then the fr brake 'switch' would have to be working.

continuity eh?....you mean i have to twist the dial on my multimeter  .....i suppose that an earth leak could make sense....ill test tonight

cheers

One too many brake switches thats the problem just get the thing on the road! Leave it half finished just like all my projects.

Gotcha, you gotta get it signed off or given the once over before she's legal ?
I go everyday with no front lights or rear blinkers . Some call it slack attitude some call it creativity! :D

ok update.....seriously what the fuck is with continuity

for every ohm setting i got the same results no matter. even no matter what brake was on or not.

continuity what?

Update - Resolution (my favourite posts)

so i tested the actual switch by shorting the wires and bingo she works...stuffed switch.

so why the fuck was i getting those readings? ...i checked them thrice....oh well....off to get another part.

just this and a new throttle cable and i think shes ready for the road. might wack on a pilot power while im at it

Cheers
Ben

lol, I think you confuse yourself more with that multimetre.
Yours doesn't beep on continuity like most do, it just reads down to zero, it had me fucked for a bit too.
You could have solved it all with a paperclip mate, don't you hate that? ;)
