hopefully a quick qn

i snapped a "headbolt" for lack of a better word when putting the rocker cover back on after resealing it.

its pretty much flat with the surfact that it goes into from memory and i think i can get a drill at it.

whats the easiest way to get it out? i dont think we have any decent easy out bits hanging around.

maybe centre punch and drill a 2mm hole down the entire length of the bolt and try and back it out? not sure if i can get the drill exsactly the right angle cause of the frame though

another thing...should they be snapping so easily? (i snapped another and got it out) i was tightening them but holding the socked wrench around the "head" so didnt have much torque going into it.

replace all bolts? or just eat a few less weatbix?\

cheers
Ben

Nick were you using a 1/2in drive socket set? They tend to help over tightening small bolts heaps.
Try laying off the weetbix and your goriila grip with a smaller socket set and a torque wrench will save heaps of pain and suffering in removing broken bolts!
Easy outs work when used properly but don't break one in there cos hardened steel is a bitch to get out! Beleive me I know. Tungsten Carbide tips on a Dremel gets that shite out though!

Allen keys make good easy out's or you can drill a line of holes to make a screwdriver slot.Just depends how tight the bolt is.Is there any of the bolt shank sticking out you can get a shot at ?

yeah you may be able to create a groove to get a screwy into , or you could drill and tap the hole.

everyway is a bitch, i have a 1977 gemini that keeps getting snapped bolts, less weetbix and torque wrench will save plenty of hassles.

Buy some l/h twist drill bits, they work awesome.
The drill may bite then it will wind the broken piece out or you just keep drilling till it goes through & pick the left overs out.
Unless the thread is damaged or bottomed it will usually wind out.

I HATE easy outs!!!

Hey, you aren't supposed to be home tonight Ben!

yeah ...nah..i had to work late...server emergency

<real reason>i havent gotton around to getting the haircut that i was chastised about 2 weeks ago, been soo busy</real reason>

i might have a crack at running it with that one as it is and see if it actually leaks... theyres a few other bolts around it and theyre all tight as a nuns ass...i mustve had the wheetbix that day.

otherwise looking as it i dont think the flat head idea would work. i think the only drill bits strong enough would make too thick a channel...and i wouldnt want to snap a drill bit in there.

Youi'll want a thicker bit. But not as thick as the threads go one size under the bolt shank size. The bigger the bit size the more tension it is going to releave from the threads. If you put any loctitie or anything on it drill the hole get the easy out on it , then hit it with a small hand torch to loosen .

you are going to have to get it out at some stage.
