Orrite then, all you lurkers, outta the closet! Share with us all what sort of bikes you ride and some piccies if you can! If you need any help hosting pics I'll be happy to load um up into the gallery and you can linky to them there ... so to get the ball rolling, I'll make a start meself ;)
I'm relatively new to this whole offroad bike and motard thingo, unlike some other long termers, so its all a bit new and glossy to me. I've had various road bikes in the past - started off on an old klunker of a Z250 kwacka (that I had to rebuild first to get running) when I was 16. Went from there to a GPZ600R, then sold that when I moved overseas for a stint. While o/s I bought an XR600 back here in aussie mainly for parts, as I had also come by a Honda RS250 chassis to match it ;) (take a look at http://members.iinet.net.au/~nmilne/supermono for more info).
I rebuilt the top end on the XR motor that was still a dirt bike and rode around on that before eventually giving that to a mate of mine. By that stage I had got myself another road bike (suzuki RF900R) which was a good bus and got me by until I moved from Adelaide to Melbourne....
Once over here I wanted something rather bling bling, so bought myself an 00 aprilia rsv1000 (and here's a couple o pics):
http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne_non-motard/DSC00987.sized.jpg
http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne_non-motard/DSC00989.sized.jpg
I also finally got my little supermono project going as well, but have only done a couple of track days on it because of the never ending list of things to do to it and the death of the supermono class in australia
http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne_non-motard/DSC00894.sized.jpg
http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne_non-motard/DSC00891.sized.jpg
In between I also bought myself a little Kawasaki KR-1, which came with a road going KR-1S. I kept the S in my garage for ages before eventually selling it on ebay and kept the KR-1, which by this time I had fitted up with some S goodies, revalved suspension, etc etc. Shortly after that I also blew the beegezus out of the motor (big end fell to pieces) which then necessitated a bare cases-up rebuild using the scads of spare parts I had. Here's a few pics for posterity:

http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne_non-motard/Neil_PI_2004_RHS_mg_sm.jpg
This little green jigger continues to be my cheapy track day, but I can see that the day is quickly arriving when it must be replaced ... its fantastic fun to carve up the big bikes around the back of the island, but its just so dang slow down the straights (nothing to do with my girth of course  ) that its becoming annoying. Not enough guys out there on 400s or 2-strokes to have fun with
The aprilia doesnt get much use any more, so I'm actually thinking of selling that and getting myself something a bit more suited to long distance touring (like a vfr, yzf600 or summit like that) for when the drz is a bit too much of a pain, and using the left over cash to finance a new (to me) 600 track bike. And maybe throw a couple of grand at the drz in between ;)
Of course for those who haven't found my post in the 'building the tard' section, here's a few pics of the beastie ;)
http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne/DRZ_Left_Front.jpg

http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne/DSC01124.sized.jpg
http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne/DSC01130.sized.jpg
And, of course, last but not least, my poor old, long suffering van  Poor thing is almost due a new motor, but I can't get a reco one easily and its going to cost near on $3k to recondition the existing one  So it might be time for a new van .... or a 'real' car and a trailer :?
http://vsmr.net/albums/nmilne_non-motard/DSC00712.sized.jpg
So there ya go! Now there's not excuse for not posting even if you're not the motarding sort (at least yet!) :P

Hey Neil
Is that van an Izuzu?(holden)
I used to do engine conversions!! We could put a sr20 turbo Nissan motor or a RB20 turbo 2ltr 6cyl (165kw+) I have seen a 350 chev in a L300 bitsashiti van recently, it does 12 sec quarters!!
What do ya think??????????

I did run out of pills - how did you guess??
Neil the chassis on most vans are really tuff, does that mean you've got money to burn??
We could get a front cut of a jap car for like 2k with everything you need except driveshaft (which needs to be custom made) and efi pump, easy
Ever been to a motocross meeting and seen all the lowered white hiace vans with 18's on them? you may not have show but man you'd smoke'em!!! :shoot: :^o :chainsaw:

Yeah, pitty the rust holes would tear apart though!
No, I think its time for a change ... mebbe a 'normal' station wagony thing to cart gear around and a trailer. Sorry to be boring but money isn't to burn, especially with this motard thingo sucking my bank account dry and having a mortgage!
Hence why my aprilia is up for sale, given the use it doesn't get any more

Your all friggin freaks!!!
No one knows what an imp is.
You'll like mine muzz. Full race suspension lightened shell turbo motor and 2 sets of wheels 13 x 8s with hoosier road legal slicks (245/45s) and I have just made a set of 15 x 7 fit (hoosiers as well)
And Get this I did a brake test when I first got it together 10 yrs ago and I was told that the back wheels got a tiny bit af air!!
It does lift the wheels on hard take offs (with very mild 875cc turbo draw through carbi setup). I am now building a new 930cc turbo (T3) and intercooler blowing through 2 x 40mm webers, It should be aroung the 200hp to 220hp. Just got to get a gearbox strong enough.

I finished the mootard today and Neil will be pissed because I got my Acerbis headlight and front guard today after ordering it on Tuesday? And my petrol tank and shrouds are also Acerbis and they came from Italy in the time Neil has waited for his tank! I have learnt that if you want it done do it yourself. No slight at all on Neil here either. Dealers in the city are not worth a c#@^ full of cold water, no matter who they profess to be. (Unless your married to one) If you deal with country dealers they cannot afford to fu#k around customers with lack of service/enthusiasm/knowledge/continuity. Do yourselves a favour and come to the country, meet a friend of mine and you will never have your bikes serviced/maintained/accessorised in the city again. I know... WHAT! Go driving for a couple of hours just to get my bike done? If you are an enthusiast, it needs no further mention :argue: ...
I would post a photo, but I dont know how! (Neil does though!)

I'm always checking to see when the next ride is, and i'm just itchin' to get up the spur sometime soon. I've done it a zillion times on the roadie, so i can hardly wait to get the kato up there.
But as you'd understand, sometimes you can't always get to where you want, when you want!
I would have loved to have come down for the night-time city ride...
One day i hope to meet all you guys. I was "THAT" close to gettin up the Alpine way over easter, but i would have been drawn and quartered if i'd gone. :(
By the way, if you need a ute for your "world record attempt", i've got one and would be quite willing to act as the, (ahem) transport vehicle. :D

Get some ring master protective plastic!! It will make your old plastic look new or new plastic stay looking new!!!. Try silicon spray on the tank though or CRC (it's better than WD40 for this)
I have just put some new ringmaster clear on my YZ and it looks new again!!
I'll post some pics tomorrow!!

Bastards! :P ...
Can you do the sticker thingy with the logistics of work in the city mate?
If its a real hassle I will get down there this week and collect them.
Ash is right, if it is applied carefully the clear cover Craig uses is very good and retains a gloss for a long time.
Or you could use PLEXUS plastic polish. Its an aerosol thats used for buffing lexan/polycarbonate and works very well. :D
Wobbly
24-04-2005, 12:35 PM
I'll sort it out this week ... work out a day to work from home and dart out there ... no dramas mate, its a hell of a lot easier for me to sort out than have you come all the way down from wang given they're fairly close to me :!:
Neil- bike looks excellent, (lawnmower looks pretty pimpin with the whitewalls too :P )
I use Armour all for plastics (but beware folks it makes a non gripper seat slippery)
Flash

Plexus works well, but black plastics turn to shit a lot worse and quicker than any other colour, so I would still go with the clear plastic and plexus on the tank!!

25-04-2005, 10:25 AM
You should be able to get Plexus from most hardware stores, and most bike shops sell it also...
Its grouse for lenses and aeroplane windscreens!

Muzzard
14-06-2005, 08:13 PM
No, it ran very well outta the box...
As a track bike it ran methanol with another carb and pipe combo...
For MX and Motard they are heaps fast enough already.
Why the hell would you fiddle with the jetting anyway Sibbo, I have not seen anyone ride them to their full potential in either discipline including dirt track...

i've heard they are pigs to jet right. that they are really sensitive, ie it might be good in the morning, then the weather heats up in the arvo and you have to re jet.
Other stuff I have read, is that the combustion chamber shape is wrong, and that it causes pinging. which you either need to have re-shaped or run a bit of race gas to up the octane rating.

Cheers Muzz,
I suppose i'd only need a front rim too as the rear is already a 17, although motards run wider ones on the rear end don't they?
Rob
Nice, front does look a bit funny though. Skinny rear is OK, makes for cheaper tyres and faster turning.
Muzzard
26-09-2006, 01:58 PM
I explained the easiest way to do the motard conversion to 17's front and rear in the other thread Rob.
Relace the rear 2.5" rim to the front hub and fit an Excell in 4.25" or 4.5" to the rear hub.
Cost cheap as you will find probably.
1x Excell, and 2 spoke sets.
speaking of rims. . .
Are the 165 slick tyres (bridgestone to be precise) made to fit a 4.5" or a 5" rim?
I have a 4.25 and it squeezes the tyre right in, if i upgrade to a 4.5" will it fix the problem or do i need to go up to a 5"?
I might have a spare 4.25" excel rim going cheap soon too Rob.
shane
26-09-2006, 02:07 PM
they are made for a 5.5 but run on a 5 fine
Thanks Shane,
You wouldn't happen to know what the "actual" width on a 5' rim would be, would you? Is it likely to be more than 165?
i'm pretty close to the chain as it is, and i don't really want to lace the rim off centre if i can get away with it.
SMC690
26-09-2006, 11:18 PM
165 slick will run just fine on a 5" as Shane said.
You will just have to try a bit harder to cane the tyre right to it's edges as if it were on a 5.5. :)
Muzzard
27-09-2006, 08:26 AM
The extra 3/4" has to go somewhere Tom and unfortunately I think there will be no other alternative but to offset the rim. :(
So whats a silver 5" rim going to cost me Muzz?
I've got about 8mm spare on each side of the tyre, and pleanty of room either side of the rim. Fingers crossed, let's hope it fits.
If it doesn't fit there'll be a cheap 5 inch rim for sale!
shane
27-09-2006, 08:53 AM
you wont have a problem with it fitting , a 5.5 will go in there so a 5 will be a breeze .
as muzz said you will have to offet it , but being a supermoto you will never notice that the wheels arnt in line ..
the brigstone is not as wide as the michelin or even the maxis piece of crap ,
i fitted up a new one yesterday for our races on saturday
been using the new dunlops but not big enough for a 5.5 made for a 5 ,i guess they are old stock as the dunlop supermoto tires in europe and the states are 170 , these came out of aus and only 160 .
I'll give it a go then.
Problem isn't fitting the rim, it's fitting the tyre. At the moment the tyre is pinched in, which i think is all that's stopping it from hitting the chain. Is it worth going up to a 5.5, if i'm going to do the swap anyway?
Muzzard
27-09-2006, 09:54 AM
I would be measuring twice Tom.
Maybe use a tyre that you intend to use, fit it with a tube and inflate it to the size you reckon it will be expanded and slide it in the swingarm to check for overall clearances.
I have seen a few XR650's with 5" rears and they look quite tight,..
but not that for the sake of racing you would not try to offset a 5.5" just that bit further and possibly have no interference issues.
Surely it would be within 3 mm of the swingarm if it was fitted with the 5.5" on the right hand side though, and maybe the same to the chain?

Muzz, yeah it is a 160/60. this picture does make it look a lot bigger than it actually is tho.
I got these tyres on reccomendation from the bloke at Skidz in sydney, He was a huge help, very friendly & i'd reccomend Skidz to anyone in sydney.
He said these would be quite flickable & good for city riding which is 75% of what i'll be doing.
but looking at them next to my mates 160/60s on a 4.5 rear, i see what you mean,
would 150s next time be a good call? what kind of stability/cornering characteristics will be got with each, or is 160/60 in a 4.25 just a bad fit?
Wobbly
10-10-2006, 09:17 AM
160 in a 4.25 rear is just too big. It pinches the sides of the tyre inward too much and, as a result, you end up with a profile that is too steep at the sides. A 150 will give you more progressive feel across the range of lean angles as well as a larger contact patch. You'll also not be able to use the tyre all the way to the edge with the 160 so you'll be left with perpetual chicken strips, in case that sort of thing worries you ;)
Rohan,
Get thee to Oran Park this weekend. Me and Dave will be there, Dave is taking his DRZ400 i'll be on the XR.

Nice Norco Nick,
I wouldn't mind rippin a few parks on that little baby.
Rohan,
You will get a much more enjoyable and stable ride with a 150/60 rear on the 4.25".
It will allow you a greater lean angle than you would have though possible, far beyond what you have now.
Chain clearance also becomes better...

if you have good brakes and push forward on the bars with the right brake pressure than it hardly knocks any speed off at all on the 640. ive tried the whole sliding forward and while its easier to lift it gives you less control on the front wheel. in that position i can ride it alot further and am less likely to do the dive over the bars aswell.

Thankyou Krooz,
Vindicated by someone who can roll a decent endo.
I'm with you mate on the bar position and brakes without killing the road speed, and about the control.
You only gotta release the brake at any stage it fells too high or on balance and your down again and not over a pair of 'folded to the headstem stop' handlebars...
And the bike will stay in whatever position you put it in, in fact you cannot do a rolling 180 in the position Brett is in.
Fact, no argument there.

Correct, the next track day I had your chain and rear sprocket and a new set of pads.
Did I do any damage to the rotor? Sorry if I did.
I think by sitting forward, you are able to move the bike more on the front wheel (stunting), cos there is more weight over the front wheel.
I hear what you are saying, but I prefer to do what I do.

No can do Chum, not with the inside of the bars jammed against your hip.
Have you tried a rolling 180 yet Brett and got anywhere near at least 90?
There is no room for error or balance adjustment in your theory and you will bite it sooner or later doing it mate.
Just my 2 bobs worth.
I'm just a newb at all this wheelstand and stoppies stuff anyway.

i can see why sibbo would sit like that though, it would mean your body isnt going to try and move around so all you have to worry about is leaning and steering, but in saying that thats the same reason not to do it, it will limit how much you can move around to force the bike to do something. but in the short term the best way to do something is the way you feel most comfortable then build from there. or just make your own style.
Sibbo

just make your own style.
Thats what I do :D Its called Sibbo Style
To get the bike to move on the front wheel is more to do with weight and lean than steering input and I have enough room to move the bars anyway.

To get at thoes pink bits is hard work as its the fork.
Keep em pink, cos who does not love pink bits??

Its an anodised coating Daniel.
So will need a complete disassembly of the forks and the legs stripped and then reanodised to gold for the povvo Ohlins look..
looking good, can't wait to see it together with the retro sticker kit.

One would assume (assuming makes an ass out of u and me and is the mother of all fuckups) that with your user name it was some sort of factory grey import out of Japan. Not something you handcrafted yourself, slaving for hours, starting with a simple solid piece of billet. ;)

1. go to gallery
2. pick appropriate gallery
3. there's a little drop down menu in the top right.
4. pick add photos
5. select photos
6.I usually open another window where I make my post and another with the gallery.
7. right click on the photo you want

10. go to message, push the Img
11. paste photo URL and press Img button again

SMC690
15-03-2007, 10:29 PM
Basically....
The slide in the flat slide is connected directly to your throttle cables. Where the slide opens to is directly related to how far you turn the throttle. Just pretend the cable is connected directly to the top of the slide for instance. Open the throttle the whole way and the slide opens the whole way. Instantly.
A CV carb has a a slide that is lifted by pressure built up in the carby. The cable is not directly attached to the slide. It has a diaphragm that the slide is attached to and as the pressure builds up the slide slowly lifts. Open the throttle wide open quickly and the slide eventually opens the whole way as the pressure builds up inside it.
That's the best I can do with the amount of beer I have had at the moment.
CV's are nice and smooth and are good for fuel economy and are built with emissions in mind. Flat slides are designed with performance in mind and not with economy or emissions.
There ya go.
