Ok then, just sitting here trying to work out what my next project is going to be ... I've done about what I'm able to do to the drz (with a few small exceptions) without major open heart surgery so I'm now looking at the next little thing to have a crack at. My thoughts are:

Build a S1/S2 type track tard: Get myself a YZ400/426/CRF/whatever and turn it into a good value track tard ... buy the bike for about 4500-5000, 2k on a conversion using existing hubs and away you go...

Build a lightweight track tard: Get a 250F (YZ/RMZ/KXF/CRF/etc) and build a lighter track tard ... cost is pretty much the same, but may be an easier track tool esp around tight courses.

Build a mini: This is where muzz can cast his vote :) Basically build up a cheap mini using a small dirt bike as a base (YZ/KX80 etc) and lace up some 125 GP sized rims to it.

Bigger, badder street tard: Ok, I must admit I wouldnt mind a bit more poke for a street tard, even after the engine mods for the DRZ. A WR wouldnt make that much more power now so I'm thinking something with a big slug, like a converted TE570 with a bit of cam an head work etc... :-k

Streetfighter: I still kind of need a street bike for longer journeys where the roads aren't windy ... so getting a crashed 'something' and turning it into a streetfighter is something I've toyed with for a long time ... thinking old R1, blade, etc.

DRZ/CR conversion project: Another idea kicking around in my head ... go sick on a kicker DRZ motor, stroker, big bore, ported, the whole nine yards ... then wedge it into a stiff, first gen CR250 beam frame...then get it registered  A realiable, powerful, light, street tard....

Upgrade my track bike: Something I've been meaning to do for a while - jettison my KR1S track bike and get something bigger and faster, such as an R6 or similar. Have been a bit annoyed with lack of any straight line speed at PI on the 250, but now with the price of track days I'm wondering if that's going to be an issue if I end up doing more at broadford/winton/etc...

For some reason the last track bike option didn't take, but I figure its the least likely so feel free to ignore it ;)

Have a look at a smr570, put the tc cam and exhaust on it leave it rego'd just so you can come racing. I don't rember the forum, but if an xr600 can do the island a smr570+ will also and I believe it will eat the KR1 in a straight line (geared right). Correct me if I'm wrong there with the straight line bit. But less weight more power And I've seen you roll yourself up in a ball on the KR1 so it'd be the same on the motard... Just a thought. And we could always turbo it!!! I have refined my design, and I only have a year of warranty left!!

If you've really got too much spare time you can come and paint my house

Well I just thought I would let you know where my vote went. DRZ/CR. As all you have to do is get the CR hubs laced to some rims and then you wont want to remove the CR engine!

Good point !!

Well obviously the mini gets my vote ...
You've already got half of Noah's mechanical manifest in your garage, but what is lacking is a KX100 set up with the GP wheels...
Well for that matter, a Chinese 4 stroke mid wheel like a 125/150 would be good as they are XR 100 engines and lend themselves to performance mods easily, and you are starting with a new bike for around $1500... 8)

Supermoto at the Island aren't a good mix. I remembe a guy down there once with a CR500 and there were only 2 corners where it wasn't pinned. It was horribly slow. Upgrade the track bike and come road racing ;) I basically want one of every type of bike, so I feel your pain, Neil, only having the main food groups and not the side serve of chips :)

There was a turbo 520 ktm going around the island about 3 yrs ago (guessing here, I read about it in a mag) apparently it wasn't pinned every where but it did wheel spin a lot!! :D
A resonable CR500 should put out 100+hp that geared right shouldn't be pinned every where also!!!
Muzz You might be able to advise hear, I used to race MTbikes with a guy who said he had 75kw at the rear on a cr500 No way you would have that pinned everywhere either.
Also neil do you remember the guy that we ran into on the top of the Dandenongs on one of our rides who had a smr450 and his mate was on the benelli, the guy on the bennelli said he had a smr570 and was in the 150's at the island. I don't know if that's fast or if he'd be pinned every where but, he was so proud that I figured it was fast!!
These will never beat an R1 down the straigh but fuck man if you pulled a quicker lap than them you would be able to rest on that one for the rest of your life!!

1.50 at PI is very good.

100+ph CR5.....they talk standard of 65 hp....much porting and a difficult bike to ride would be a CR5 with 100+hp.

It would take some meticulous porting to mirror finish complete with flow bench and digital flow meters, blueprinting the bottom end, knife grind on the crank counter weights and some serious squish resetting to get that sort of HP from a CR500, and even then its gonna be on alky ...
75HP is about tops for anything that will stay together, not seize within the first 30 seconds of fire up, and at least get a race meeting outta the engine before starting the rebuild process again ...

Besides, Track fees being what they are now for the bigger circuits, why not take advantage while you can of the GPTC usage at $30 per day?...

I just voted for the streetfighter.

Here is what I used to ride. 93 gsxr1100 painted matt black with go lo spray can.

Nice fighter

And yes, any cr500 approaching anywhere near 100hp would only last for a nanosecond. I think your mate had a good grip on his joystick ash :snigger:

Nooooooooo, He wasn't my mate just some one that used to talk shit hence the reson for the correct me sentiments!!!
You would think 75 would be easy, maybe a KX500 then

Wobbly
07-09-2005, 08:54 PM
Not easy I don't think ... a well sorted KX500 with some porting, ignition advancer, etc etc will dyno about 65 rwhp ... to push past this you'll need some more major mods, and I'd say the rideability would likely be rather interesting to say the least  :lol2:

A 250 twin can push out over 100 why can't a 500 single get close to that??

Cal

1:50 at the Island on an SMR570 would have an extraordinary rider on board - either that or he was taking short cuts across the infield ;)

If he was a real motarder Cal he would have jumped a dirt mound and roosted the crowd on his way through.
You know now I'm gonna pipe up again and say Screw that shit Neil, Look at the cost of building and running a mid wheeler/mini motard.
There are Shineray bikes out here along with a friggin shit load of others that use the same configuration of engine (XR100).
Wheel rims will set you back $300 a pair, a pipe can be had from Staintune to slip on the factory header, or you can build your own header with a bomb for about $80 and fit up any aftermarket muffler.
Carb mods are as easy as bolt on a Mikuni or Keihen flatslide, and ditch the airbox for a Uni pod or the likes.
Sprockets and chains cost around $80 also for the lot. if you are only riding small circuits like GPTC for fun, they are good on tyres, fun to ride, and for the stunters in the crew good little bikes for just that, fitted with Barkbusters and sliders these bikes are forgiving on the wallet at the end of a day when things dont go exactly right.
No radiators to crush, CDI, 2 valve engines. Back to basics cheap fun.
Not as hard to ride as the 10" wheel mini motards which are unforgiving if you lapse concentration.

A 250 twin can push out around 80-90hp ... but does so through having a higher rev ceiling and a greater amount of piston area to do it with. Just the same as why a 1000cc v-twin can't make the sort of power that a 1000cc 4 cylinder does with any sort of reliability. And why, for example, in world superbike racing all the ducati teams throw away engine cases after 1500k's whereas the I4's just get basic top end treatment over the course of a year's season...
