After installing a oversized piston and having the cylinder bored out 3mm , so we could race the S1 class we were getting 62hp at the back wheel. On the track the bike was unbelivable I have never riden any thing like it. Then it went BANG. Shit.
The bottom of the cylinder skirt had broken away and stuffed it pretty quick. just a note dont bore out a CRF it just cant take it (wish it could though).
After about 50 phone calls around Australia and to the states it has been decided to leave it as a 450 now and not risk another incident.

This happened Saturday morning and by Sunday night the engine had been removed, cases split, all the shit cleaned out and every thing checked , reassembled and installed back in the bike. The only thing left to do is install the cylinder(when it turns up) and head so about an 1 hours work and were good to go again. So the Australian championships are still looking good.

But yes bigger is better, see if you can find some one to machine up some liners. I have a book with possible contacts for that sort of thing. The book has details of peaople that make parts for F1 engines. liners, valves etc. I'll have a look for it.

Got to say that the CRF motor doesn't sound like it suffers working outside of its design parameters much :shock:

It will hold together with one of them bling 485cc kits from Europe though, I have seen them hammered in the Safari series last year.
I think Graham Cheney was riding a 480cc CRF in the Vic Champs in 03, I think it held together too and ran really hard at the 3rd round at DECA.

Some info I found out today
The larger piston / weight causes problems. The piston in a CRF is the same pistons they were using in the 1997 F1 cars , so you really cant beat that.
The cylinder just cant handle being bored out and it is the first bike that has let go on me in over 10 years of racing.

that has to suck and cost serious cash.iwhat are you getting standard or the 480 ,490 kit barrel ? i was just reading about greg trachy 505 strocker he ran at pikes peak and blew up replaced it with a 480 off his back up bike then blew that up so he had a real bad day
