Wow, that sure is a tight squeeze in there ... still running a 165 on it with the 5 1/2? Need any machining to go in, or welds ground down?

Does look the goods too - tyre seems nicely spread over the rim 8)

after a full day saturday it has 3 little marks on the rim noting on the tire,i will make up a guide this week to keep it off the rim.
the worked so much better it had a lot more traction getting on the gas ,also used a whole tire right to the edge ,not to mention the big black lines it was leaving out of every corner . :D

That would be great to see you back over here champ .are you getting a transfere back or just going to find another job here ? .Wet4u is selling his CRF over here as he never uses it ,i also might be putting mine on the market if i can get the 06, AP honda might be getting one in for me at a good price have to wait and see.
i think Matt wants a CRF for next season also, the big 500 is not cutting it in the lap times.
also the guys from stormriders have some help from kaw as they all ride D-Trackers 2 of them might be running the KXF450 next season .
Bruno is selling the 576 KTM as he is getting the new 06 or will buy marcel goetz 05 race bike that he is running in the world champs
so next season is looking good the boys are getting serious :)

Shane you said that it gets alot more traction once on the gas, a wider rim would normaly have the opposite effect ?
The main reason for a wider rim is to have more traction backing it in, you should at the same time lose drive and some side grip mid corner and exit. The reason that you are now using the edge of the tyre is because the tyre is now flatter.

How are you finding the Maxis tyres after some time on them.

Cheers
Ben

Wouldn't the wider rim spread the tyre more and increase the contact patch though? :-k

The 165 tyre's correct rim size is a 4.5-5" , a 5.5" is for 185 sized tyres.
When you put a small tyre on a wider rim the bead has to spread out further which flattens the tyre accross the top but at the same time decreases the side wall as such.
The reason that some guys prefer the wider rim is because they have more traction when backing it in.

you are right in what you are saying ,the reason its getting better traction is a 165 tire is made for a 5.25- 5.5 rim so the traction patch is bigger ,where before the edge of the tire was sucked into the rim. a 160 on a 5.0 works fine but you need a bigger rim for the 165.
as for backing it in i have been having a few problems since i started using the maxxis ,they do not grip that well on the way in and you are not careful the back tries to pass you on every corner .they seem to be ok grip wise but the rear takes a long time to scrub in ,they spin up nice very controled no sudden letting go or bite.and the rear last a long time but if it was easy to get all brands here i would not run them, they are ok and a great price but not in the same league of a michelin supermoto tire.then again it depends on the level you are racing at most of the guys here think they are a great tire and have not had any problems with them.
as for the front i have used brigestone, dunlop and michelin and maxxis 120x76 is the best front i have used as far as feed back and feel goes ,but it didnt last that long i got one race a 2 practice sessions and it was toast but a good tire should be after that .the other 3 lasted twice as long but all were very vague ,when it came to feedback and also had more front patter than the maxxis .the 16.5 front is the way to go, geat feel, turns on a dime and no patter i am using a dunlop at the moment the new michelins are on the way now.

i have the order book from maxxis it has the 160 4.5-5.0 165 5.25-5.5 other brands may be different
