View Full Version : Dodgy wheel mods

When i bought the XR650 i was told that the wheels from my XR400 (excel rims on talon hubs) would bolt straight into the XR650. . . not quite true. The front wheel is fine, but the rear wheel doesn't even come close. So i have had to Bastardise around to get it to fit and i think i have it sussed. I got myself a new set of XR650 bearings and a standard XR650 inner bearing spacer (the one between the bearings).

My problem is this, in order to make it all fit only one of the bearings is seated hard against the hub (the disc side bearing). The talon hub had 2 bearings on the sprocket side and only one on the disc side. To make them work on the XR650 i have had to use one bearing on each side only and the one on the sprocket side now sits in the middle of the hub where there used to be 2 bearings. Is this safe? or is the wheel going to move around on the bearing? Apart from this the 650 uses a 240mm disc and the 400 had a 220 disc, not a problem you say, use the standard 650 disc. . . not quite, the mounting bolts are different and won't fit the 400 hub. Question 2, does anyone know where i could get my hands on a 240mm rear disc for an XR400 hub?

This is really a problem that would have benefitted with some photo's but i wasn't thinking all that rationally while screaming profanities at my wheels at midnight last night.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds to me that if only one bearing is seated that the hub will be free to move back and forth on the axel? I might not be getting it though, so yes, a picture or two please :)

:-k
YOu might be able to get an over size disc from say braking or ebc. Wheels wise  Maybe photo's will help :)

First up the single bearing in place of two very bad idea, the bearings outer race need to be hard against the lip of the hub. If it is not against the lip it will be dangerous. The only way I would even consider it would be to have a spacer machinded up to the same ID of the lip and to the thickness you require. Two bearings are used to cope with the amount of force of a big 4stroke. The disc should not be a problem though, call chain gang in Qld ( sprocket guys) they can make discs, so Ive been told.

Cheers

Tom,
The rear bearings in the hub must have something more solid to rest against, in laymans terms, so you need to machine a spacer the width needed to end float the wheel bearings against.
I'm with Ben on the disc dilemma and would be onto someone like Aussie Bike Discs or the likes to have an oversized unit remachined to fit...

Seeing you have Talon hubs why not just get onto Johnny Titman and get the right bearings and crush tubes sent to you and then they go straight in again like the 400...

I got a custom made rear disc from Metalgear in Qld for my 426. Took a while to arrive, but they did a good job.

Hi Chris,
I have heard of Metalgear before, and it was good.
Time wise how long did you wait from order to delivery, and what did they sting you mate?

Muzz', all up it took about 4 weeks, but half of that was because the guy I was dealing with over the phone went on holidays, and nobody else knew anything about my disc.....It cost me just under $200, but that was a trade discount. Not sure what they charge retail.

Sounds damn fine to me mate...
Even with the delay.
Thanks for the input Chris as there's a few out there building at the moment and some older model bikes that are not as commonly motarded.
I meet people near daily that ask me for info that a lot of the time I cant give detail to, and discs is one... ;)

Mate if the avatar pic is your bike, post it up in the Gallery in the Yamaha Album.
Can't see much of it, but what I can see looks nicely built mate. 8)

Very nice there Chris.
A lot of hours pondering, a heap more actually doing it, and now the rewards of the labour.
Will certainly turn heads Chris.

I fitted an Acerbis longe range to my 03 WRF250 Chris and the result was good, although it is fitted with smaller shrouds (They come with the tank) and they dont sit tight into the radiator edges.
The others here will tell you gladly that I am anal when it comes to the bike and I was not overly impressed with the fit of the Clarke unit, or the IMS, so went with the 13LTR Acerbis.
There is a bloke here close to Wangaratta making the big tanks for Yamaha for the 05 range, I think 25LTRS!

'I want a tank for my motard not a motard tanker!'

OK,
I concede to slightly anal, but thats only because my Grandad always said I was a 'pain in the arse'...

(All 'Grandad' stories can be verified by either Rastus or Hillbilly) ;)

Back to the wheel problem, I've got it covered from both angles now. A mate has machined up a spacer for me and i have ordered the new axle sleave and wheels from John Tittman. The disc is not sorted yet, but i'm confident i have enough options now to make it work.

As for the bike:

New headlight, bark busters, grips, short fender, axle sliders, sticker kit and small indicators on :D . Ugly fork protectors off, waiting for fork brace and sexy fork protectors to arrive.

Ugly old speedo and crummy handlebars off. Sexy new trail tech computer, custom stainless dash and keyed kill switch on.

Ugly old tail light and big indicators gone. New small indicators and tail mounted brake light on.

Now it's time to start on the engine, carbie, exhaust and finish the wheels :(

This was the problem with the rear wheel, but i think i have it sorted now. The set on the left is the Talon XR400 set, the right one is the XR650R standard set, as you can see the axle sleave is much longer on the XR650 set.

Thanks for all the tips, Ash from John Tittman Racing has been pretty helpful, thanks for the reference.

Tom,
JTR are the men in the Racing circles Australia Wide, I shit you not!
I have through Rick Wason dealt with John Titman for many years for custom cut sprockets for the speedway bikes/sidecars/hillclimbers.
Without too much hassle you will usually get understanding on the other end of the phone, not some dickhead who cant even spell 'bike'...
Only too happy to try to help mate.... :D

Nice indicators Tom, I got me some the same a while back with the last cosmetic alteration ;)
