Oran Park 17th July
Just a quick race report.
The weather was perfect at around 18 degrees and the sun was out.
After qualifing I ended up 4th in the expert class and about 7th for the all powers races.
The first race on my new CRF450 was pretty good , oh how more power makes for better racing. The CRf is a weapon and handles like a dream. Fighting with a few of the front runners before slowly falling off the back and finishing in 2 or 3 for expert.
As the day went on and some fine tuning of the bike took place my lap times kept on coming down and I got closer to the front pack.
In the second last race I was trying to get past another rider in every corner with out luck and while following in the dusty dirt launched of a jump getting cross rutted in the process. End result was a crash landing on my knees , och !
In the last race I was feeling comfortable on the bike ( Knees pretty sore) and from the 3rd row on the grid got up to 4th place in front of quite a few factory riders and was riding my ass off when one of the factory Husky riders carved me up, doing the old switch back I managed to get the postion back, 2 corners later he took me out ! Fuck I was and still am pissed there was no way it wasn't going to happen and was dangerous move. Remounting in last place, I was so pissed I managed to catch up and pass the riders I was fighting with earlier in the day finishing up pretty well considering.
All up it was a great first race on my new bike and will only get better , the Australian Supermoto Championships start on the 28th August at Newcastle, also there is to be and Australian round in Vic.

On ya Ben.
Nice to have some input from someone who can give those of us who don't race yet, a wee bit of a taste of what it is like.

Hi, I've been reading the site for a while now but didn't think any of you ever made it up sydney way.
I was at the race on Sunday (not racing, just watching). Great stuff! I like the changes to the first corner, much more spectacular to watch. Is it better to ride or worse?
I've just written off my XR400 motard in a "friendly meeting" with the side of a hatch back, and am now test riding second hand bikes to buy with the insurance money (plus a bit from the back pocket).
Just tried out a DRZ400 on monday and trying a KTM 525 next monday. The KTM is about $2,500 more than the DRZ (both 2003 models in good nick). Are the KTM's that much better than the DRZ's?
Any help appreciated.
Tom.

The big katoom will have a fair bit more Go than the DRZ ... but you will spend a fair bit more time wrenching on it. Do you do a lot of miles commuting? One of the reasons I went for the DRZ myself was because I rack up about 10,000k's a year just riding about the place and wanted something a bit more maintenance friendly ;)

If it is not too late and your insurance company and the insurance company of the hatch back are different companies, and the insurance company of the car paid you for writing off your bike, you are the legal owner of your twisted xr.
Dont let them keep/take it, as it is yours to do as you wish with. It does not matter that you have received money from the other insurance company for it, it is still yours.

well done sounds like you and the bike are on the pace ,i have been checking for a race report very day since the race but in the wrong section {dickhead} are those pics of you ? if so you have a great taste in helmets and boots .i was about to book my tickets for next month in newcastle but just seen on ncnews that its not on now till nov ?mark said it was aug last time i talked with him . do you have any more details .
by the way i tested those maxxis slicks i was impressed with the front 120/76 soft the rear is a just great if you want to spin it up everywhere but with a bit of testing could them to work in a fashion not up to the michy's but if thats what you have to use what else can you do but ride the thing .
how is the knee feeling i just got a new set of leathers made so i can wear my knee braces underneath i makes you feel a lot safer.
well done again
Update on the XR situation, Insurance assesor was out yesterday and the bike is officially written off. I tried to keep the wreck but he wanted $2500 for it.
In the end i did alright, i got $6000 for the bike (2000 XR400) and i got to keep the wheels and motard bits. Also got $600 for a scratch on my leathers and $800 for helmet and gloves.
I test rode a few bikes yesterday, including a motarded 525 and an XR650. I have to say that the XR650 is sounding like a great deal now. half the price of the 525 but just as fun, and i already have a set of motard wheels that will fit.
Decisions decisions.

The 650 is a big bike but jeez they go well ... I've ridden Antti's and the thing definately has some grunt, even just in basic uncorked form

Is the insurance assesor from the car driver's insurance company or your bike insurance company?
If he is from your bike insurance, you can't get the wreck, but if he is from the car driver's insurance company, that bike is yours! It does not matter what he craps on about, it is the law. Insurance companies are bastards, get what you can from them.

Shane,
The Australian Championships are now ???? on the 11th/12th September at Stanthorpe , Qld, it is on the border of NSW , New England Hwy. If you are flying you would be better to fly to Brisy. I would not book any thing untill it is definet or atleast as definet as I can be. I will let you know when I hear any thing , should be a couple of days. Marks series is not the Australian rounds though.
yep the pics are of me in practice and trying to learn the new bike, it is great and will only get better.
