In the last few days Ive been thinking of maybe parting with my Berg.
02 650fe. Reg till Jan. Brand new black plastics that I havent fitted. 5 laps of Frankston Track on a New rear dirt tyre and all spokes replaced. 90% trail tyres. She was owned by Greg the parts guy at Top Gear until I bought her in December. Maintained with no expense spared.
Im really gettin into the Mx thing right now and Im maybe thinkin of going for a lighter mx bike...

Go Lee!
What will you get?
I heard some very inpressive stuff about the new YZ 2 strokes!!
Apparently they are going to be a big suprize this year.
Where do you ride MX?

Thats the thing, I dont know, Im a beginner to off road riding, i've ridden road bikes since I was old enough and in recent years i've been into the big bikes, I love the torque!
I bought the Berg for the dual purpose aspect though in the last few months the knobblies have stayed on. I want to ride my bikes fast? on the road and i just cant do it no more... in fact i dont want to do it anymore, i want to keep my liscence and i dont want to die because of another road user.
Since emigrating to Melbourne i have regained my passion for motocross, i have always followed the sport but never tried it. On the track you can ride as fast as you want (can) No cops and no obsticles driving towards you. I will always ride the roads but maybe having my kicks on the track will slow me down a bit on the roads? I ride at Frankston every weekend and this has encouraged me to keep a healthy lifestyle. Im not drinking 30 pints a weekend like i did back home. I keep a religious interest in the sport, especially following the AMA motocross and supercross seasons. I have huge respect for the ongoing growth of the freestyle scene, those guys are awesome.
I'm still a beginner and i want to improve. Although I want the fastest bike out there my head is telling me go for a 250 four. Maybe an RMZ? Ive had my fun with 2 strokes (used to own an RS125 which raced the tt) and i love them, but the smooth delivery of the 4's just feels great. What do you guys think?
In a perfect world i would definatley have a big black stinky berg motard in the garage too...

Lee, you have seen that I can't really ride. I can though ride the yz smoothish. The YZ is easy to ride, if ridden with a bit of respect. I dont need to have it pinned in the right gear to go fast (for me!). At my new track I roll around in 2 and 3, only using 4 for the straight. 1st is for when I crash!
Dont disconsider (is that a word?) the mighty strokers, as they will be cheaper to buy (no one wants em) and cheaper to run in the long run.
Before you go buying a 4, ride my yz, it will change your mind (or maybe ensure you go 4!).
On the big bore 4s, where is the hp from the KTM 525 SX? That is a bit piss weak. But, the dirty big 750 monster is impressive.

Yeah, I saw a dyno chart from a 525 and it seemed to peg out around 52hp which I thought was a bit less than I was expecting
I think the TC510 husky makes are 57hp :?:

I have to agree with Brett you should try a 2 banger to either rule it out or to give it the thumbs up.
When I started riding in 02 I went to a few clubs and spoke to as many peopleas I could and they all said the same thing, if you really want to learn to ride well and enjoy yourself start on a 125. This said after I had ridden for 10 months (and Stephen Galls Motocross school) I could jump on any bike and ride fast (b grade level and I wish I had the fitness to do it now but I have hardly ridden for the last 2 years)
My advise is as always get a 125 then after 12 months get what ever but you will be a better rider for it.
BTW. I used to get a lot of shit from mates who had 250's and 450's about my little 125, that only lasted around 3 months before I could cain them on it!!!

With a 125 you have to get it in the right gear or it simply does not go (Correct Ash?), which can be a bit of a problem. One of the guys at NDMX rides a CR125 and we are of a similar level (that is a bit of an insult to him!). I dont really pull away anywhere due to more hp, as i cant really use it.
But the issue of him have a 125 is that he needs to get the gear right comming out of corners onto jumps. He has also changed the gearing to suit the track, as the 125 was between gears at one corner. This is not a problem that i have with teh 250, as it had a broader spread of power. I guess the same can be said for the 4 strokes and the lack of changing gears, ever.
So you will be a better rider on the 125, but do you want all the extra effort? Run out stock on brand new 125 are as cheap as.....well you know!
Talking of starting to ride on a 125, as opposed to a 250. The 250 will be intimidating to start with, were the 125 will be softer (Ash?). I had a few years of road bikes before the YZ and let me tell you, it was a steep learning curve on the stroker. It still bites me hard when I disrespect it, but enough of me.
Ride everything you can and make an informed decision, that way you can ensure you have made the right decision for YOU.

a 125 will make ya a better rider
for a 250, ya have to respect the bike
just a personal experience.

Your right about the right gear brett, but the power of the 125 is harder to deal with it is a lot more aggresive. The 250 is more like a four stroke in that it has a broad spread of power.
My preferance is for the 125 because I like to have to be aggressive. However a TC510 would look good in my garage!

Thanks for your opinions boys.
Ive heard so many times before the 125 is the best way to learn how to ride. It makes sence as you guys have said, you have to really work them.
Though they are a dieing breed. The KX isnt been realeased in the USA and no one in the class is racing the 2 strokes.
Then again Im a beginner...
I normally am a beliver in "bigger is better" and im trying my best to make the right choice. Thanks Brett for you offer, that was cool though its definatley between the 125 and 250f's. Im going back to basics so the 250 2 stroke is not on my list.
Im a poser and usually like to have the best of the bunch, the 250f's are that and even though they are classed as reliable the maintenance is more than changing a piston kit after a few months.
Next stage is to price a few in tomorrows trading post...

From the FAQ section of that 750cc conversion website....
Can you E-start and K-start the engine with the JBSracing 750cc kit installed?
The electric starter motor on the 2003 Husabergs will not start the JBSracing 750cc, we have not tried the 2005 starter motor which is slightly longer and more powerful. We have a much larger starter motor from road bike that we will try soon but it require a small amount of case machining/cleaning up.
The JBSracing 750cc kit can be kick started.

You need little pots and 4 of them, then it is easy to push start. As I spent last night running up and down the street trying to puch start the 6R. As some stupid moron was warming the bike up with the fuel off. As it has a stupid fuel pump thing that only seems to work with the engine going, it would not pump fuel, so I flattened the battery trying to get the fuel through. That is why I was running up and down the street looking like a goose
Any way, it runs. THe Unifilter flows pretty good (i would not know if it didnt!) and the bike does alright wheelies in 1st and I need to get my style right for second gear standups, as I got it up, but only just. It also does good stopies, but need to fix the front lever, as it has far too much travel.
So when is the next ride, well next ride after the 9th of August? Got an exam, but then I am good to go.

Guys, been busy doing un-fun stuff. Just sent an email to Ben in the UK about his kit. Will be interested to see what it cost because you are right Neil, the big Berg just hasn't got enough oomph to get the front wheel up in 6th on power alone.... tisk-tisk :D
Rode to work on Friday in the wet and felt like I was on a dirt track with slicks. It has to be the best advertising for commuting ever... arrive with a smile on ya dial. :fart:

1350 Quid mate ... which sounds a bit expensive, but it includes new cylinder liner and head packer, crank, rod, upgraded bearing design, longer skirt piston with 3 rings, etc. They advertise that because of the revised crank/bearing design and longer skirt 3 ring piston it makes the whole shebang more reliable as well, which seems to add up - better bearing fixes known berger main bearing failure problems, longer skirt piston reduces rock and the need for piston replacement and the 3 ring pistons allow less blow-by which reduces oil contamination, compounding the effect of the main bearing fix :-k
Almost makes one want to start looking for a FE650 that's been thrashed or even had a main bearing failure without resultant cylinder head destruction :-k :-k :-k

Dont like your chances Neil...
Nature of bearing failure as you know will find all the small bits in the rocker gear first...
