View Full Version : SMR project - V
alright, well i had a serious offer from a bloke that was deadset on buying my bike. at the last minute i pulled out. i sat down and worked out how much mone i spent and realised if i was going to get another enduro, i would do the same again.
so i want to fix my bike, i.e get the cases replaced.
what i need.
a tc 450 doner. if you see one for under 5 k let me know.
plan is, my engine has to come out. so while its out, i want to know the following.
can the cases be powder coated, if so will the colour stay or fade with heat.
would it be better to anodise or powdercoat. im going to do the fame black, triples red, rims red, and subframe black with black hubs. ( colour may change as im not dead set on a colour scheme.)
i really want to do this myself, is there anything i should know when pulling an engine out? ( of coarse the mechanic will fix it along with some other mods going in while its out :) )
in polishing the swing arm, dose a special coat have to be applied to stop it from rusting?
i want to powder coat the spring red, is this possible?
is it possible to anodise spokes black?
thats basically it for now, but i will be selling my grey tank and air box for the black 07 ones.
il also report on how the engine held up at 4*** kms since it will be all apart.
and one last question, can anybody recommend some powdercoaters or anodisers in sydney.
yes it will cost alot, no i dont care, yes i will have some husky parts for sale- PM me on what you want- and no, this will not happen over night. i get my full bike licence in august when i wish to rerego and insure so it will be cheaper. so august the 8th is the deadline.
one last thing, has anyone delt with monstrano ? are they good to order parts from, if so how long dose it take?
and yeah, im attached to my bike more than i thought.
wish me luck, as she gets stripped next week ( bike is being inspected this week to see if link international will pay - but i doubt it untill i go through fair trading, but either way the engine dose have to come out)
and sorry for the shit load of questions.

You can powder coat almost anything although bear in mind there is a heat cycle to the process.
Alloy will stay polished if coated with polyurethane.
(Alloy only white rusts, not like ordinary steel with the brown rust)
Spokes can be bought coloured now from JTR
( http://www.talonoz.com )
The website linked to the chain snapping thread I think had some Husky cases didnt it.
Is your completely RS?
thanks muzz, i cant see any link in that other thread but i am looking overseas for some cheap cases as over here i got quoted 3000 just for the cases!!!!! like wtf!

I must have missed it but what is wrong with your cases?
the case saver has snapped of from the impact of the chain failing.
sorta need that.

can the cases be powder coated, if so will the colour stay or fade with heat. YES BUT RISKY. IF THE POWDERCOATER GETS ANY WHERE IT SHOULDN"T GO THEN YOU COULD END UP WITH ROUGH EDGES THAT DONT SEAL PROPERLY AND BOLTS THAT WILL BE A BITCH TO GET BACK IN.
would it be better to anodise or powdercoat. im going to do the fame black, triples red, rims red, and subframe black with black hubs. ( colour may change as im not dead set on a colour scheme.) ANODISING ONLY WORKS ON ALLOY I THINK, AND WILL BE A LOT OF WORK.
i really want to do this myself, is there anything i should know when pulling an engine out? ( of coarse the mechanic will fix it along with some other mods going in while its out :) ) LABEL ALL YOUR BOLTS
in polishing the swing arm, dose a special coat have to be applied to stop it from rusting? ALLOY DOESN'T RUST. YOU'LL JUST NEED TO CLEAN IT A LOT
i want to powder coat the spring red, is this possible? YES
is it possible to anodise spokes black? NO , SPOKES ARE STEEL. JUST BUY BLACK SPOKES.
can the cases be powder coated, if so will the colour stay or fade with heat.
Cases can be powdercoated, they will have to be masked. It's not the best thing to do as you are covering them with a 0.5mm thick layer of Polyurethane which will serve to insulate. Ceramic engine treatments or a high temp paint is preferable. http://www.hpcoatings.com.au/pages/index.htm
would it be better to anodise or powdercoat. im going to do the fame black, triples red, rims red, and subframe black with black hubs. ( colour may change as im not dead set on a colour scheme.)
Anodise but bear in mind colour anodising will scratch and show white underneath
in polishing the swing arm, dose a special coat have to be applied to stop it from rusting?
If you polish aluminium you will have to polish it every week to keep it looking good. It can be lacquered but this will look a bit ordinary once it chips. if you want a shiny bling swinger get it coated, electroless Nickle is the hardest wearing process and these guys have a bit of experience.. http://www.electromold.com.au
i want to powder coat the spring red, is this possible?
Yup, check with your powdercoater. They will have to strip the existing colour
sweet thanks for all the info guys,
and thanks supa for the links too!
cant wait to pull her apart :D

will definatly have to look into it alot more.

Come on Bara out with the friggin camera mate.
A picture tells a thousand words.
If its not compromised the case and oil is pissing out, fuck the case saver, grind the busted bits flat with the rest of the casting,
And find a new anchor somewhere else on the engine for the custom case saver you are about to make ..

X2!
I had to get new cases on my 450 but that was only because 5th didn't like being confined in a smelly oil filled room!
okay muzz, here is a pic of the nite i snapped it- as you can see, the only thing wrong is the mount, i have put 300kms on it since without a problem. it can be repaired, and no oil is leaking out nor is the case durability comprimised ( sp? )

i am just worried if a chain dose snap there will be nothing to stop it from smashing into the cases. but in theory it did its job and saved the case :P
also i am willing to supply beer and smokes if anyone wants to help me take my engine out as i have no idea where i should start.
i.e do i take the swing arm of first, or dose that come after? really need a manual or something.

You could try drilling and tapping a hole and using bolts (Can't make all the details out in the photo) looks like it would work.
When pulling the bike apart start at the top tank seat rear gaurd subframe first. Then rear suspension exhaust carbie radiators. Lastly unbolt the engine.
okay thanks flash, the bike will start to be torn down this week end. would making a viper coil ( i think that what its called ) in that section of the case work? im only worried it peircing the cases. but then again my mechanic should know what to do. he has already suggested this to me as a quick fix.

I would be probably grinding the butt of the broken piece square to start with and then seeing if theres enough material to drill and tap a new 6mm thread and use a small collar/spacer/washer and longer bolt.
Otherwise like I mentioned look for another anchor point for the case saver and templating off the orginal for position with some cardboard add the pieces you need to make the anchor points.
Fabricate off the template and bolt onto the engine.
These are a pair I made a while ago to accept larger sprockets, there is the inner and outer to protect your boot from entering the sprocket as well.
Made from 6mm bulletproof alloy plate ;)

thanks muzz- will let you know how it goes.
where can you buy that alloy from?

Most scrap metal retailers will have some alloy plate,
Maybe not the bulletproof stuff I have but still strong enough ;)

You're going to buy new engine cases just because of that 1 little mount? Unless you're trying hard to own the first $25,000 Husky450 in Oz i'd be building up a stronger custom case saver that will mount onto another point on the case.

Been trying to tell him the same thing,
Looking at the picture I already see 2 piss easy anchor points.
Ahem,
Starter motor mounts are usually pretty strong, as well as the bolt immediately above the broken piece ;)
UPDATE!
well it is fixed, and stronger than knew ( hammer test proved that :P )
the mount had plenty of metal left in it and we tapered a bolt and drilled into the case ( we had another 450 apart in the shop and sore that this was the thickest part of the case ) apparaently this is happens more than you think ( mx not sm ) and is a simple fix. husky has said they will look into the bolt mod that is being used by alot of riders.
2nd.
topend= replacement, i think. my engine is rattling alot and is down on power and is wearing prematurely for a husky, so warranty is the issue here :) finally a good thing lol. while this is being done the head is getting ported aswell.
as for the chain and link international. they are refusing to give me the chain back saying that i will slander the product. i simply replied that i have every right to what is mine and that freedom of speech can be a bitch. so obviously they dont want to fix it, but they dont want me showing other people their chain. bastards. more on that later.
question- is it possible to get a locable fuel cap for the husky?
!!!!! cant wait to get back on and ride!
Didnt read the thread but I have dealt with Motostrano a few times before.
They have an awesome product selection and fairly quick shipping (4-5 days to a capital city) but they charge like a wounded bull for shipping.
I noticed their shipping prices are a proportion of the items value (check the shippping for a $300 suit then a $2k suit....BIG DIFFERENCE). I emailed sales about this and they werent willing to do anything about it.
I would reccomend having a good hard google around for alternative stores before buying from there again.
ah thanks for that, i was going to buy my zorst from them, but i havent bought from them before, so yeah.....
im talking about an australian company who imports the chains. sux balls cos everyone usually has a good run with rk.

this is an update, kinda side tracked a bit from original plan.
but frame is getting painted- black.
im going to try something a bit unorthodox ( for a motard ) on the swing arm and triples.
im still deciding on rim colour. probably will go black.
engine: the pin in the rod is what went. it was starting to strip of the nickel coating on top, thus the damage. piston is spent and so is some other things. but thank god for husky warranty, didnt even budge on it and are going ahead with the job- THANKS HUSKY!
as for other engine internals at 4300kms. fine, gear box looks brand new and nothing is worn. awesome! had a crf450 their with 120 hours on it and god was i glad i treat my bike well. i mean, damn, whole thing was shot to shit.
so yeah- husky admit that a bad batch of those pins was the issue.
hear are some more pics

Yeah, maybe if you are looking at your screen from two blocks away. ;)
2048 x 1536 is big, lol. How big is your bloody screen?
Maybe the host is hosting full size images but giving you thumbnails.
All is good.
