After much fiddling ive worked out the following:

I turn on the ignition and all starts up as per normal;
As soon as i add load, the display goes out and as soon as i take the load off, the display boots up again.
This "load" can be anything from turning the headlights on, or turning an indicator on, or pushing the starter motor switch.
If I unplug the headlight, then i can turn the light switch on and off and high beam on and off and the display lights up like it should. If i disconnect the starter motor, then the start button successfully clicks the relay.

So whats the problem? I checked all the earths i can find. I put a volt meter on the battery and it reads 12.7V so i think thats ok. It will run if i roll start it, but since i turned it off its a bitch to roll start cause where i live its flat.

Help.

Bike shop, elecrical faults can be hard to find, could be a loose connection, youll have to inspect the wiring. Check the battery volts when you try to start it, to see if there is a drop. other then that , take it to the shop, good luck

Check the battery volts when you try to start it

Im an idiot. I had checked the battery with the ignition off and it was 12.7V, but just now I checked it again with the ignition on and it was like 7V. So I think the battery is rooted.
I'll grab one in the morning. What a waste of an afternoon.

Have you tried bumping it and checking what voltage its putting across the poles of the battery?

Oops, bit late. My battery fried itself a couple of months ago, similar sort of thing, hence why I was asking as it might not be providing voltage under any load (which it obviously isn't). Get a decent batt though, I got a yuasa replacement.
