View Full Version : SNAPPED A BOLT- FARKING VERY VERY ANGRY!
so im servicing my bike, drop oil goto take of oil filter case. and a bolt - the long one snap inside of the god damn thread! inside the farking engine casing. like wtf??!?!!! i thought there were hi tensile bolts ffs.
how fucked am i?
im so angry now its not funny.
Not that fucked mate.
You can get simple devices for removing this kind of thing - goes as follows:
Drill a hole in stuck bolt. Screw the removal whatsit in to the hole (they have a reverse thread). When it tightens you just keep going and it will bind and miraculously unscrew the broken bolt.
Obviously a few caveats with this, but in principle it's a piece of piss.

They're called easy outs, but be gentle cos they will break just as easy.
Remember just be calm and gentle and if that means leaving it for 24hrs and coming back to it with a clear head do it.
Destroying a thread in an engine case is the worst thing you could do.

If its one of the deep threaded bolts, how deep into the case did it snap? If its just on the surface an easy out would do the trick. If its half way down a recessed bolt hole then things are a bit tricky.
Very strange for the bolt to snap though, you'll normally turn out the thread in the relatively soft cases first, it must have had a fault in it.
thats wat im thinking- husky is going to get a very abusive call from me.
btw- bourbon has calmed me down.
so spewing cos i got a replacement radiator- and havent ridden for 2 weeks!
im taking the day of work 2moro to take it to the mechanic and i aint leaving till it fixed.
They're called easy outs...
That's wot I said

Buy top quality easy outs, not cheap shit they snap off!
Dont let the shaft of the easy out twist at all it will snap!
If in any doubt at all take it to an engineering workshop,
a bit of know how in this situation will be needed.
nmilne said it well in regards to when and when not to use an easy out.
I did it on a KX250 2T and ended up having to remove the Cylinder and mount it to a drill press to drill it out clean and re-tap larger. Don't try to drill by hand or eye in this situation, be patient!
took the day of work and took it to my local mechanic and he fixed it, thank god! he used a small bore drill and drilled into the screw, avoided hitting the thread and gave me a replacement bolt.
cost 95 but it took well over an hour and i turned up unounced so i was happy.
i tightened them to much and stretched the bolt hence why it snapped.
but best part was i took it for a ride, didnt care it was raining- felt so good to ride lol. my girlfriend jealous but i said i would ride her anytime ;)
a thanks goes to my mates jack and daniel for helping get through last nite without leveling my garage

So now you will use a torque wrench right??? Tightning bolts that go into the case should always be done with a torque wrench unless you have been swinging spanners for a long time (and even then a good tradie will still use one for piece of mind) ;)
I snapped one with a torque wrench that didnt reset. When your torque wrench is a foot and a half long you don't know you're going to snap it till you do. A smaller torque wrench is on the shopping list.
...but I didnt get VERY VERY ANGRY FARKIN!!!
Chill out Bara.

definatly will look into getting one.
considering iv spent over a grand on my bike in the last week i met let it wait a little....

Yeah i have a baby 3/8 drive tordue wrench, big ones are fairly useless on bike (apart from some larger bolts/nuts like the CS nut that has to be done up to some stupid setting)
I got my snap on 3/8th for $90 bucks and its already paid for its self ;)

if you want a new snap on one you will have to find the snap on truck that drives around the workshops, will be expensive aswel
anywhere like repco, coventry autos or any good tool shop will have them. Make sure you get one that you can understand how to use properly otherwise its just an expensive breaker bar........

Norbar are the best! Make snap on look cheap and nasty!
But you pay for the quality. I've got 2 and they total $1000

Snap-on have an expensive RRP but i have never paid even close what they are asking. The snap on torque wrench i think was "priced" at $189 but i got it for $90~

That is the best piece of advice i have read in awhile. It amazing the amount of people who buy something with out checking out if it will suit the job. A mate bought one and went to go use when he found out the lowest setting was 50ft-LB which was about 40ft-LB to much
Sure it may have been bling, built to last the test of time but if it wont work for you their is no point in buying one ;)

Hence why I have 2! I want another as well but I don't "need" it right now

I bought a low end range torque wrench for doing the cam cover caps on the DRZ (which are well known to be made out of cheese) but found that my draper mid range wrench read bang on at its lowest setting (10nm) which surprised me.
Of course my big torque wrench is probably accurate to about 25nm :lol2:
