That's 11 people in novice, which for this series will only be for people that have not raced before at all. The guys that are still semi-useless but quick enough to put off new riders have got their own separate C Grade grouping. Now's the perfect time to get into it. Shit, there's even a DRZ400 in there. :D

Hey Devo, can you tell me if you have to have leather pants to race in Novice class ? Will Kevlar jeans suffice ? or Nylons ?
I am thinking seriously about trying to get to the Jan. round but would have a lot of work to do on the bike to get it to spec.
;)

Leathers would be you best option Oz, if you can wear jeans then I'd suggest wearing some knee protectors under them as the jeans don't stop you getting hurt they just reduce the medical bill a bit ;)

Oh , did I forget to mention ....
I dont plan on falling over
Yeah I know what you are saying Stig, the bitumen isnt very forgiving.
I will have a look at some pants.
But not from the Blue Oyster Bar, right ????

I'd be happy just to try racing Motard, getting a little bit long in the tooth now,
Not as fit & flexible as I used to be but I am keen to give it a go.
Only about 12 hours drive from here so its a bit of an effort but
I will try it.
Racing under lights would be awesome.
Now to get to work on lock wiring all the bolts & trying to set up catch
cans....

You can sneak a track day in with kevlar jeans, but leather only for racing.
It's not that much work at all. Come down with a bit of time to spare and we'll have a working bee on it if you like. Be all done in a hour or two.

Oz,
Drill small holes through the heads of the bolts and lock wire, the caliper bolts that secure the caliper to the forkleg, the oil drain plugs, coolant drain plug and radiator cap.
Catch bottle the crankcase breather and the carb/tank overflows, preferably into separate bottles as the 'pulse' of the engine will change the atmospheric pressure in the carb bowl if the crankcase and the carb overflows go into the same bottle ;)
You will see shitloads of them done into the one bottle, but I dont do it ..
Leathers are a requirement for competition along with a back protector,
boots and gloves.
Helmet must be affixed with the ASA sticker and be undamaged externally ;)

hmm just looked at the novice group
there are a couple of 250's, a DRZ and even a husaberg.... but no husky?
maybe i need to get my arse into gear and come fly the husky flag.
Whats the minimum stuff you have to have lockwired to race?
i'm not to keen on drilling holes in my bike and from memory the oil drain plug is a allen key head and there is no where to dill / wire.

Thanks for that guys, this is what I enjoy most about being in a 'group" like this. I will have a go at doing all the drilling & wiring myself, thanks for the offer Devo, and I will attempt to catch all the fluid overflows.
Is the track all bitumen ? I am running GPR 10's.... they dooo not like
dirt at all.
Do I need a back protector ? (did I read that before, I have no idea)

hey thanks for that Maico, I am going to try to get to the Jan. round.
I have an A star jacket (leather) so at this stage I am going to try to get just pants. But if I have no luck I will be interested.
6 ft & about 85 kgs, maybe just a little bit heavier, maybe .

Hi Ozmoto,
I don't know about long in the tooth, you're lucky you've got teeth. I am nearly 52 and racing motard and still loving it, even if I do go bouncing down the track now and again, and agian, and again. The vets class is great and the guys are really worth getting to know. Life is too short to worry about what people think. If you come to the Queensland track, please find me. My bike number is 949. It will be great to catch up with you.

Hi Ozmoto,
If you already have a jacket, the pants you get will have to zip onto the jacket, like a full leather suit to comply with race regulations. If I can be of any more help, feel free to ask

You are only drilling the flat facets of the bolt heads and the lip of the radiator cap where it wont affect it operation Wayne.
They can be replaced if/when you need to or sell the bike ;)
Internal drain plugs can be changed for external or cut a piece of alloy and make it into a 'tab' ( about 8mm wide, long enough to reach into the plug ) and bend it into the recess of the plug head to stop the plug turning,
No holes at all except for the tab mount ;)
Go racing mate :D

Hey Muzz I have a question...
Do I need to lockwire the calliper mounting bolts or the bracket bolts
or all 4 of them ? ;)
Muzzard
09-12-2007, 10:40 AM
Just the 2 x 12mm headed bolts that secure the caliper mount to the fork leg lower and then wire through both heads so its a long loop or you can twist it between the bolt heads for a neat look. ;)
shane
09-12-2007, 11:33 AM
if you have a bracket between the caliper and the forkleg you need to wire that as well mate , so 4 bolts

Back on topic... :P

We got just a few drops of rain. Like literally just a few drops. Stayed dry for us the whole night. :) Despite that, the track was exceptionally slippery, and didnt seem to improve much throughout the night. Was all good though, everyone seemed to just go a bit slower and my times didnt change. :D Quite a few near crashes though.
I came away with a front row grid spot from qualifying in C Grade, before making an absolute mess of the gearbox going into turn one and nearly ending up with maico949 barreling over the top of me in a rolling stoppie. Went alright in the dirt and got a 2nd for the 1st race. Continued to make a mess of my starts for the next two races and spent the first few laps playing catch up, but latching onto the back of the tight pack of the 1st four up front by the end. Finished the night with 3 5th's. Had an absolute ball.
The new class system seems to work nicely. The day hoots along at a fair pace without being split into s3/s2/s1/vets, and makes a bit of extra time for the dedicated novice class. 1:11s was a winning laptime in novice, with last place clocking a 1:24, and plenty spread out in between. Everything from 550's to 250's, and at the pace we're going on a little track like Willowbank it didnt seem to make much difference (I got smoked by some kid on a 250  ).
Can't wait for the next one.

Fuck knows what I was doing in the first race. Ended up freewheeling it into turn 1 with the clutch in trying to work out what gear I was in. I need a CVT transmission out of a scooter I think. Wheelstands for the next 2 starts.
Yep, no classes. A&B, C, Novice, Juniors. But they're gonna move people around based on speed more than anything I think. Only so much you can do with the limited numbers we had, and it is just club racing after all.

you should mention to the man in charge how they do it in the UK you run your transponder in practice and your time determines what class the put the fastest 30 in A next 30 in B etc , being a club round with out having the number maybe they make it 15-20 instead of 30 , but its a good way to sort everyone out .

I actually did say that to him Shane having remembered you talking about it before. I think it's a great idea.
sounds awesome devo. i reckon i could run alright in novice. once i get the crf tarded up

Better get it tarded soon before you join myself and Gordon in the "we've been beaten by a girl" club. Danielle did her first track day on monday and got the hang of it really quickly. Certainly wouldnt have come last in novice. 8)
i sure i will be very wobbly and she will beat me. best times for me were around 17/18 or something so based on that i wouldn't of come last either. but after ridin the crf on weekend i reckon i will be a bit quicker once i get some pratice in.

By the looks of it, they got the grades about right. There was only the kid on the 250 that smoked everybody. He was doing 1.06 at the end. His first race in seniors just coming up from juniors. Now I know how the supercross feel when somebody passes over the top of your head on the jumps.
I had a good meeting. I didn't fall off. I will have to fit headlights to the bike to ride in the dark so I can see where I am going. The eyes aren't what they used to be. (I'm giving up wanking on Tuesday. Just not sure which Tuesday!!!!)
Good to see Steve improving with every race.
Looking forward to the next meeting in January.
