View Full Version : Decent brakes for my YZ250F

I'm looking to replace the standard MX front brake caliper on my '04 YZ250F for something with more bite and less fade before the next season starts in Feb. As per usual though, I have to do it as cheaply as possible  .
I've heard of people getting road bike calipers from wreckers and using them. Are their certain ones that adapt best or are they mostly the same? I already have the oversize disc and caliper adapter to accommodate the larger disc. Would just getting a larger reservoir make much difference? Any thoughts?

I've heard of Quad brakes being used too. But apart from wreckers, Ebay, and be prepared to look overseas.

Larger reservoir wont do a thing except stop you refilling as the pads wear.

trx450 masters can be used. but opinion seems a bit mixed.

Doesn't seem to be a cheap way to get good brakes as most calipers which would suit come of expensive bikes like ducati's etc

Shop in US

I have some ZX-6r calipers for use, but you would need to run a cast rim to fit them in.

I also have a cast rim, but it would need to be modded to fit.

I have a spare 4 piston front brake caliper (MIB I think - made in qld somewhere). Its a bit heavier than the 4 piston braking one I have, but it's proper 4 piston and takes a standard braking pad I think. Anyways, if you're interested I'll flog it for $200 (less than I paid for it, but the same as what the braking one cost me second hand)....

Btw the MIB bolts straight on to your fork leg and should suit any bike that uses a 260mm disc and nissin 2 piston caliper as the standard dirt bike brake fitment.

budgets suck i know i 'm broke most of the time as well
but really if you want to race dont f#ck around and bite the bullit
go the beringer set up
ok the cheap way is too get an oversize disc and spacer for standard caliper
i have an oversize disc off a ktm but cant find the adaptor (yet)
i could maybe make an adaptor at work
see me at TT next if your interested?
but i would still go the beringer in the long term

Have a look on motostrano.com
They are always having specials on brakes, some are really
quite cheap, and as long as you keep it under $1000 Au
there is no import duty or tax.
The exchange rate is exc. at the moment.
checked yesterday & they have a deal on Beringer now...

Thanks guys. I realise the cheaper options are never going to be as good as something like a Beringer setup. I've already got the oversized disc so just need the caliper. I'm probably going to have to wait a bit longer now though cause I seized the top end last night out at TT :x . Just have to wait and see how much that will set me back first. Neil, that MIB sounds like it might be an option. I'll PM you when I figure out what I'm going to do :)

Bugger. Bummer mate. Hope it's not too ugly when you get her opened up.

Likewise with megahead, I can't speak too highly if the beringer setup..... but yes, $$$
