View Full Version : Anyone like Aircraft?
I'm currently working at Lackland AFB in Texas and they have a pretty good static display of aircraft.
Here's some pics...

Mmmmm, I like that Blackbird and the whole cold war spyplane era. :)
Some lite reading on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR71
This is my favourite one by far... I think he was working out how to steal it...

Here's my old one, I traded it on the KTM, 3,529.56 km/h wasn't quite fast enough.

I too am a fan of the SR-71, at uni they just had us prepare a "journal article" on ramjets and the SR-71 is basically the only manned operational aircraft that was powered by ramjets and operated at supersonic speeds, but the engines operated as turbo jets at takeoff and landing, very tricky indeed for an engine that has next to no moving parts. Lots of missiles are powered by ramjets and you all probably saw the test flights recently in Queensland of a scramjet capable of reaching Mach 10. Makes my drz look slow at Mach 0.1 (123 km/hr) :)

Looks like the SR72, the Blackbirds replacement is becoming a concept.
Hypersonic, Mach 5 or higher, unmanned with no strike capability is a possibility.

And from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the people you can thank for the internet. They started it.

Pahh, they're no AP-3C...
Oh and broke, you would be surprised how many moving parts are in the gas turbine section of those engines.

Orion, lol. Nice try. ;)
I could imagine there would be one or two moving parts, three at a push... :)

I was more referring to when they are operating as a ramjet, I was under the assumption that the gas turbine engine was only used to reach Mach 1? After looking at the those photos I'm more confused then before.
