MRA to fit proposal


The Melbourne City Council is again to look at a proposal to ban the city's unique footpath parking for motorcycles and scooters.

News Limited's Herald Sun newspaper reports: "City councillor Peter Clarke said with the increasing popularity of motorbikes, especially scooters, the time was right for a review of the CBD regulations that permit two-wheeled parking on footpaths.

"'The street is where you park and the footpath is where you walk,' Cr Clarke said."

Several attempts have been made in the past to ban footpath parking, without success.

Current regulations say you can use a footpath so long as pedestrian traffic is not impeded.

It's something that makes the motorcycle precinct of Elizabeth Street something of a tourist attraction, but is far from being universally loved.

Dale Maggs of the MRA is encouraging riders to attend the next council meeting, which takes place on 30 October at 5.30pm.

Yeah, i was about to say that.
Every time im in Melb i have to squeeze and push past hordes of bikes on the paths. Bikers dont mind people bumping up against their bikes do they.

Comes back to revenur raising, if u park in the street u gotta pay.

This happens every 5 years or so. Then all the bikers go into the city early, take up 1 carspace each, the city is put into kaos, and the council goes "oh yeah, this wont work" and changes its mind again.

Just in time for Christmas, it's a good time for the MRA to organise another park-in like Nerb mentioned when Christmas shopping is at it's worst.
One bike to a space too, piss em right off.

A lack of parking and traffic congestion are two of Melbourne Councils biggest issues and they want to go and make both worse by taking up car spaces with bikes and/or dissuading people from using bikes or scooters and going back driving cars. :banghead:

i know how it is in melb cause i live here. but yer i allways park with a decent gap from the wall of the building to the end of the footpath. aprently ... well i asked a ticket inspector dude and he said 1.5 meters+ no less or ud get in shit. any ways i allways park inline with other bikes.

ive seen som shocker spots were riders have parked in the completly wrong spot and people have to walk around it..
