For those considering Ex race slicks, be very careful of the age I have one that is cracking all over it due to it's age!!
A mate has one that appears to be good bought at the same time his is OK. Mine is cracking in several spots. I have an old go kart with tyres that are 8 yrs old that have done a similar thing (but worse) when I took it out for the first time recently.

You have been warned!!

Better off with a DOT ex-track tyre IMO, like a GPR70, Diablo corsa, etc :-k

When they get a blue shine around the tyre, usually on the side means the oil is coming to the surface and the tyre is probably close to stuffed. this is where road race slicks generate the most heat( spinning out of cnrs).

Neil I think a slick that wasn't as old as the hills would be fine as Steves is good. Even if you got a dot tyre that was this old it still would be cracking. The blue you refer to will usually come out once the tyre you've used sits for a little while. I have raced on "blue" tyres that still worked very well. Never as good as a new pair though maybe a tenth off the pace.

I'm thinking of pilots or maybe trying distanzia's (see other thread) but I want something stickyish.

GPR70s are very sticky, but don't last all that long ... they're what I'm using at the minute and what is on my kwacka track bike. Other than that the distanzias sound good and look to have offroad grip.

Others I'd try would be a rennsport (soft compound), a pilot sport would be ok (now replaced by pilot powers which aren't coming in 150/160 rears  ) and perhaps a metzler M1.

Keep an eye out as the guys that race in lightweight racing (400cc road bikes) run the same sized tyres (120/70 fr, 150/60 rear). I meant to have a look the other week at the stars racing at PI, but forgot #-o
