Hi everyone 1st post on this site this looks to be a great resource for us ozzies! :)

I have just tarded my 07 CRF450X. I have set of gold talon rims rear is 17"X 5". I am running bridgy battlax 160's on the rear.

My chain is rubbing againgst the rear tyre. I have researched the topic and it appears that there are a few solutions. Looking at it I probably need at least 5-10mm clearance to stop the rubbing. It also is rubbing at the bottom as well. I am running the stock chain and the stock rear sprocket (51 i think) and have a 14 front sprocket. I have a 43 rear on order.

I have read that offsetting the tyres may help with getting clearance? Is this a solution for me? Or will a smaller rear sprocket help out? I was thinking that with a smaller rear I can move the rear wheel further back to get more clearance between the swingarm?? Or is it the chain I am using? The stock chain measures 17mm in width? Are there specific SM chain that are narrower?

I have checked out supermotojunkie.com and there are a few back yard solutions but if offsetting the tyre does not work is there a off the shelf spacer kit that you can buy that will space the rear sprocket out to get the clearance?

I just want to get this thing out on the street ASAP but I want to get it right first! :)

Understanding the want for the 5.00" rear and the Talon setup,
Are they new or secondhand?
Usually made up and supplied with an identified offset unless you specify differently.
Having said that you can offset the wheel a fair amount, enough to do what you want quickly and without too much hassle.
You need to have the tyre removed and the spokes visible from inside the rim so remove the tape as well.
Starting from a defined spoke on the left hand side slowly undo each one 1 turn going all the way round on that side then tighten the right hand side to correspond going all the way round.
Do this about 5 times and you should have enough clearance as well as the spokes not protrude through the nipples into the tube area, any that are file them off.
If the chain is worn or out of adjustment it will eat the tyre wall as well.
Most of us run O or X ring chains so it really doesnt play that much but for the fact they are more rigid while running in a linear plane that a stock one so is less inclined to slap sideways.
I have just offset a 5.00" rear into my WRF250 and have had both a 165/630 slick on with 6mm clearance to the inside of the chain plates and 4 mm on the right and currently a 150/60 Distanzia in readiness for the coming camping trip,
Heaps of clearance ;)

Sorry my rear is a 4.5" not a 5". They are brand new I got a pretty good deal from my local bike shop when I bought the bike.

I am going to try a different rear sprocket and a chain and see how I go. If no good I will offset.

Cheers

I offset the DRZ 7mm to try and get some less chain slappy action, but you're best off whacking on a guide as well. The factory DRZ SM guide looks the goods and you can just re-drill/tap to suit...
