View Full Version : Camping and Jumps @ Devils Playground

Seeing the weather is getting better anyone interested in getting together and doing some weekend camping and offroad loops up here, theres some good locations that are reasonably close to Mansfield (Dry Creek/Bonnie Doon through to Lake Nillahcootie/Swanpool) as a suggestion.
Golden Mountain and Mt Strathbogie both have some gnarly erosion checkbanks on them but still able to be negotiated on a motard both up and down with only low levels of offroad skill.
Lightning Ridge Track is a nice scenic ride with some sweet jumps thrown in along the ridge overlooking Lake Nillahcootie to a short section of sealed road in the Lima Valley before climbing back up into the mountains again.
Theres a few places of historical interest and a neat camping ground in the bottom of 4 valleys with a creek running through it known locally as 'Devils Playground'
Access to the camping ground is by plantation forest road so 2 wheel drive is OK as well.
Loops can be any distance with the ability to refuel in the forest from the ute ;)
Bikes would need to be rec registered as a minimum to keep the Ranger and Police off our backs and usually dont have any issues with them in that area.
I have quite a bit of equipment that can be used in the way of setup at a base area like the camping ground.
Fishing Rods a must if you like pan sized rainbow trout
As is a decent rifle if you like venison :D
We could film some decent pictures and video to load onto U-Tube as something a bit different to your average motard useage as well.

OK you can bring your MX bikes too then
Come on ya girls hitch up ya skirts and get some value outta ya dirtbike with the funny wheels :D

Yeah, could be a go'er, but I have to build up some RDO's, cos I owe my employer annual leave from the OS trip. Something like a 4 day weekend?

Muzzard
30-08-2007, 09:37 AM
Even just an ordinary 2 day weekend would be fine Brett,
Up there Friday night or Saturday morning set up and ride the afternoon
The Sunday morning do all the scenic rides and lookouts before packing up for home mid afternoon.
Cover a fair bit of riding in that time.
It would take about 2 and a half hours into the forest location I mentioned from Ringwood as a guide.
It was just a suggestion and are open to other spots.

I'll bring a fishing rod for you Dave ;)

Muzzard
30-08-2007, 02:57 PM
Of course Brendan ;)
The stream is OK for wading if the weather is that warm, in places only a few inches deep and sandy on the bottom.
Large Ash trees surrounding the camping spot so adequate shade as well.
There is a concrete BBQ of sorts there but I also have a large steel tray for the camp fire.
Gas BBQ's as well if there happens to be fire restrictions buy the time we get organised

I will be rec registering the WRF in about a fortnight Murray,
Horn, mirror, brake light, headlight and talight usually along with the fee.
Piss easy mate ;)

I have a spare 120/70 Distanzia as a take off that would suffice for anyone wanting/needing something more offroad suitable for the camping trip as well.

ZuluFoot
30-08-2007, 03:52 PM
Hmm, I'll pop-in to KTM tomorrow and see what they can recommend iro rec rego, I'm sure they will do it for me, just not sure how to fit a taillight to mine, the EXC's are not out yet, so will have to drill some holes or tape something on, luckily this bike has a battery, so might be easier than I think?

Muzzard
30-08-2007, 07:17 PM
I would be just making up a 'temporary' bracket to mount a tailight mate.
It might 'fall off' on your first ride anyway ;)
The rego plate can be a sticker on the mudguard once its registered too.

I'm in!
I have rec reg on the YZ but no lights, (they fell off when I took the bike home ;))
How will I go on the 125? Is there heaps of open stuff/tight single track. (I don't like sitting on much more than 80 if that)
I would like to take the 610 but will need to get some pegs first!

Oh yeah if you guys want to set a date I will check the roster and book in the time now!

Muzzard
30-08-2007, 08:38 PM
The 125 will be fine Ash.
Theres a good mix of trails from singles through to open plantation roads.
About every type of surface as well.
Same type of hills and terrain as Samaria where the MTB downhill is.
Its on the opposite side of the Nillahcootie/Lima South Valley though (western side of Midland Hwy) :D
Dates wise, Anyone want to make a suggestion :?:
Daves gonna get real busy again soon along with the prep for Moto Mayhem in there as well.

I've heard dicky's horror stories of ruts he couldn't even climb out of never mind ride out of :lol2:
Its not the same place I took Dicky mate.
Its probably a bit more rutted than that
Its dirt bike country so of course theres ruts, holes, mud, dust, creek crossings if the bridges are rooted, rocks, hills, jumps, log crossings and a mix of the whole lot in a few places :D

Theres a couple of decent hills that will sort the men from the boys but also a skirt track (B3 road) around the bottom instead of straight up and over Mt Lindsay for instance.
For anyone with access to decent maps you are looking at the Warrenbayne Plantation, using the map referenced here

The dam/waterpoint shown in blue at the junction of Mt Lindsay Track, White Gum Gully Track and Mt Albert Track is the camping ground or thereabouts (Block D)
Note the topography of the area and the contour lines around both Mt Lindsay and Mt Buggery.
Both are easy - moderate rides on a motard.

You will also be able to see Lightning Ridge Track running along the spurline from the Strathbogies (with both Mt Strathbogie and Golden Mountain marked - Block F) to the Lima Valley where I used to live (Block B).
It has some really nice views across to Buller/Stirling and Lake Nillahcootie in the foreground.

Nice few jumps up and down both sides of Golden Mountain with the leftovers of both the gold rush and the hippies in the scrub to have a geek at along the way.
Dry Creek and 'Hell Hole' are also something to see with old mine drives now clearly visible from the roadside through erosion of the gullies,
Hell Hole was home to a shitload of Chinese miners during the 1850's and is amazing in its size, literally a hole dug by hand over 6 years yielding a phenominal amount of gold.

By the way each of the little squares is 1km on the map (1:100000)
map is here in bigger form for the blind

Muzzard
31-08-2007, 08:46 PM
I hope there isnt too much mud too Dave although there will undoubtedly be some spots that will be wet I suppose,
I'm not sure if I can stretch the 150/60 Distanzia onto the 5.00" rim yet so might be on a cut slick myself ;)
I have another takeoff rear but it has no left hand side at all  although heaps everywhere else if you get stuck.
I also have an old Michelin dual sport in a 160/60 but it will foul my swingarm I think so you are welcome to it also.
Ash is saying he's stuffed until the end of October but tomorrow is the start of the Spring again so a regular track days are on again at TT, seeing its also the 1st of the month how about we start the 'fortnightly regime' as a standard as of tomorrow and then the dates for the camping weekend wont interfere.

I would suggest before the end of September maybe the weekend of 22/23 Sep or a fortnight later on the 6/7 Oct at the latest.
That will give me the time to get the bike finished and do a 'recce' to make sure we are gonna be able to get to all the locations I mentioned.

Muzzard

Crap Ash,
Its like going to the MX track at Laverton only you have to get up/leave an hour and a half earlier and you can still ride all 'your fill' with us and travel with the rest heading home, if it were a Sunday being home in time for dinner :?

Theres no set intinery of rides mate,
We will just wander around in a mob in the forest finding a bit of fun along the way just like we have before.
If all goes well I will have done the 'recce' and also 'signposted' trees/junctions for us in advance to follow trails in a circuit so no one gets lost.

Almost every weekend in Sept is booked with the off day at a MX track, and I have to be home the first half of Oct as the wife will be over sea's.
Now do I need a Doctors cert or will a stat dec suffice.

No car,
Ride the 610 and just be sensible like the rest of us will be.
(Dave rides his to the rides and track days too you know and needs it every day because he has a family and only 1 car) about the same cost in fuel including the trip up there as going and paying to ride MX and some proper motarding you know like the bike is designed for ;)

Thats great mate.
You gotta be a part of this and if all are happy with the outcome we will do more and possibly with a higher level of difficulty but with 4WD support.

There is the old road to Dargo from the Hotham Saddle I want to tackle soon but it requires a bit of preparation for the 125km of Alpine wilderness.
Fantastic views and quite a few creek/river crossings to add to the mix and that will be a fully supported ride ;)

Mark PM'd me today to enquire regards mates with dirtbikes and the answer is of course yes they can join in.
Its a free country and everyone is responsible for their own actions.
The area we will be using as you can see by the purple boundary on the map is State Forest and Plantation Corporation pine lease hence the rec registration requirement.
I will be getting the correct permissions from DSE Benalla after the recce hopefully this week so can logically expect the Ranger through there for a 'geek' sometime over the weekend as well.
Got a chainsaw for wood and will organise the permits for the wood and the fire from the DSE while there as well if its not restrictions by then.

Bike Preparation isn't much
I have 2 spare front tubes and I think a rear in the shed I will bring,
You should have at least 2 air filters pre-oiled to be able to change over on Saturday night, more if you have them of course and some chain lube.
A litre of engine oil also is a good idea.
I will have basic tools with me enough to do most jobs should we need to,
A crude but very effective bead breaker and some tyre changing gear
And will see if I cant borrow a mates genset for some lighting ;)
I can suggest that to spend a couple of dollars on vinyl contact from the hardware and applied over the bulk of the bike including the lower fork leg covers as best you can, will save a lot of small sand type scratches to the plastics where you rub on the bike mostly but also from the minimal roost that we will have to put up with from the dirtbikes.
I usually do this if I go with a group or are 'sweep' for Matt and his mates.

We should come-up on a friday night, ride the saturday and head back Sunday sometime, a few tents and sleeping bags and we are sorted.

17-18 October i suggest.

Calder is on the 5th, so people will want a wekend of repairs on 20/21. 28/29 is probably a bit close to 3/4 - cup long weekend, then a weekend gap (10/11) then 17/18. That gives me the 24/25 weekend to fix the bike before my hotham ride on December 1/2.

Clear?

Calder 15 Oct
Rest 20/21 Oct
Wekend before Cup weekend 27/28 Oct
Cup weekend 3/4 Nov
Rest 10/11 Nov
Suggest 17/18 Nov
Rest 24/25 Nov
Hotham 1/2 Dec

I really should read my mosts before i click submit.

I figure cup weekend will have people doing something else. I'll probably head for some tropical island for 4 days.

There is some logging taking place in the B2 road area at the moment as well which is not a drama but annoying for track closures and the trucks of course

Its not safe enough for us in groups on the roads with the volume of trucks.
