Hey brissie guys, i'm from toowoomba and hoping to get to a few practice days in the coming months. i was just wondering what the go was. do we just turn up or do i need to call people and organise a spot?

and anything else i should know?
when are you guys going? (i need someone to follow and learn from for a while)
Is there much difference between the day sessions and night sessions apart from the dirt section and the cold?

Jove is keen to get back into some track days and racing,
Paul, Rob and Steve also do a fair few track days.
They will no doubt give you the good oil shortly,
you wont be alone for sure ;)

What are you doin tomorrow arvo? I'll be there.

You can just turn up. If you dont have a license, a day license is $25, and it's $50 to ride. That's all there is to it. Kickoff is at 4pm tomorrow and it goes through till 12 sometimes, though with the colder weather it will prob end earlier.

It's a barrel of fun. I went to my first a few months ago and havent missed one until just recently with my bike out of action.

aahhaa. tomorrow hey. well i could be tempted. i was going to organise a license on sunday so i was just going to go to the next monday one.

how often do they organise weekend practice days?

devo

just do it, i can't see you regretting it. :D

this month you're in luck.

check www.cyberbike.com.au for details.

excellent. i still don't think i can make today as i really need to be there tomorrow, with the dirt wheels on.
mate i can't wait, it's been about a year since i have been on a track and i'll bet motards are more fun that trying to race a bike that you can't stand to drop. i was way to cautious on that thing.

i just noticed on the information page of cyberbike that i need to fit a catch tank and cover the footpegs. are they strict on that, or would they let a standard motocrosser in for an afternoon? at this stage i don't have peg sliders either, although i have some on the way.

devo
07-07-2007, 09:50 AM
They aren't strict at all at the moment, but it couldnt hurt to run your carb and radiator overflow into a can ziptied to the frame. Sooner or later a proper can will be compulsory.

You dont happen to know a bloke called Peter Mann do you?

ok well that sounds ok. i'm getting wound up to go for a ride next saturday. and maybe even monday if money permits.

i do know pete. i used to work with him and now live just around the corner from him. how do you know him? and how did you know i'd know him? :? ? I'm gunna take a stab in the dark and assume you are steve. if so, i was wondering about getting your no. off pete to call you about a few things but i think i have most of them sorted now. just working on the brakes. (and sliders. :winkle:)

edit: i just called pete and turns out we were both on the money. He mentioned that if you were going to go next week he'd be keen to trip down and watch as well. so i'm hoping you'll be there next week to show me around.

devo
07-07-2007, 11:34 PM
Ha, it's a small world when you own a motard apparently.

I'll be there next Saturday and so will Jovian off this site. Tell pete to hitch up his skirt and bring down some riding gear, he's more than welcome to have a peddle on mine. Should be fun. :D

Sliders are no probs once I get that material. ;)

You missed out on a good one tonight btw. Only one group of motards and two other classes, lots of track time, and Josh McFarlane putting on a good display of how these bikes are supposed to be ridden. Phwoar, quick!

ruderbager
07-07-2007, 11:52 PM
good stuff. i have locked in next saturday already. cant wait..

i might have a crack at dodgying up a can to catch some fluids if that's a requirement. Let me know if there is anything else i should do to the bike before i bring it down.

it's going to be an interesting experience, first time in a track with slicks on a bike i'm still kinda unfamiliar with. i'm just hoping that with the standard dirt disc i don't end up getting too much brake fade on the track.

Answered that one yourself.
Especially so fitted with slicks.
Kart track,
Your disc and pads are toast in 3 laps, 1 if your on the pace ;)

Find a 320 rotor conversion as soon as you can ...

devo

Axle sliders and hand guards... Tape up the lights, or better yet rip all that crap off. I think that's about it.

A few guys out there have run a 260mm disc, and they're good for about 8 laps before they die completely. By that point most people are too stuffed anyway and it's time to limp in for a breather.

Edit: Apparently we must all ride like sissy's. I think you'll be fine just getting used to the track with the dirt disc.

was a pretty good night, josh is crazy fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I relised how out of pracitce I was and i roide like a gumpy. I also managed to throw the bike down the road to and then the husky got up to its old trick of not wanting to start agin...................had fun good to get the cobwebs off

ruderbager
10-07-2007, 09:50 PM
hopefully our good mates at aus post are on the ball and have a 320mm disc up here for me by the weekend so i won't have to worry about brake fade. i'm sure i'll have enough to worry about on the track anyway.

Are axle sliders a requirement to ride or are they optional for practise days?

i will be having a go at getting my sliders organised by saturday but i'm not sure if i will be completely organised. i don't want to turn up not having sliders and be told to go home.

Got skirt?
I just wouldn't do it Steve,
I'd be into a fence somewhere by the end of lap 3 for sure

devo

Haha, fuck you muzz. In my defence, I've since had a couple of "moments" at the end of the back straight where the brake lever has gone straight to the bars and I've gone bush bashing, and that's with the 320. That must be slightly manly right?

ruderbager, it's purely optional. I only mentioned it because they really do save your bike from damage. I'll have everything you need except for the skateboard wheels, so if you can find 4 wheels, bring em down and you'll be good to go.

ruderbager
11-07-2007, 08:43 PM
aah sweet. i tried to find a skateboard shop today but i have no idea if it's still there or i was on the wrong street. i'll try giving them a call tomorrow to see if they have any they want to throw away.
i will be getting some on there, just wasnt sure if i would have made it by saturday. i have plenty to do before then without worrying about sliders but if i can find some wheels i'll bring em with.
what's the go with the rear axle, i havent had a look but does that black rubber piece just pop out or does it have to be drilled as well.
couldn't be arsed going down to the shed to look now. it's too cold.
and come to think of it, how did you drill the front out. the way the main axle end would be a pain to drill in the middle because of the shape unless you have a drill press and decent vice.

devo
11-07-2007, 09:57 PM
The plastic pops out, and if I'm remembering the front you're talking about, you can just flatten the point in the middle with a punch , give it quick hit with a centre punch in the middle, drill a small pilot hole, then go through with a decent sized drill bit.

juice
12-07-2007, 12:03 AM
A lot of surf shops also have skatey wheels.

Daws
12-07-2007, 09:16 AM
the pointy bit on the front [that looks like a bolt] can be popped out from the other side with a long punch there is a nice drill point recess on the rear to centre your drill.

for cheap skateboard wheels, go to K-mart and buy a skateboard.

ruderbager
12-07-2007, 09:29 PM
well i ended up getting some used skateboard wheels today, free, so i'm happy. I also picked up the plastic from pete for you to work with devo.

still hoping that front disc from zulu and my MA license turn up tomorrow.

then all i need to be set up perfectly would be another rear disc. and maybe a spare set of axles, i'd rather have a set without holes in them for the dirt. unless i can find a way to seal the holes. was thinking if nothing else i can cut a shorter piece of threaded rod and just put the nuts on it without the skatey wheels so it keeps the dirt and water out without protruding too far out. unless anyone has any better ideas.

ruderbager
13-07-2007, 07:03 PM
even better for me anyway. the 320mm disc turned up today so i shouldn't have any worries about slowing down.

shame my ma license didn't make it but it would have been $20 to get it on the spot anyway.

Looking forward to it now.

i thought i read something about that somewhere else as well but i was in 'training' from lunch time yesterday till about 5.30 so i didn't have a chance anyway, and i was hoping to see it in the mailbox when i got home.

aahwell. i'm not too concerned. at least i still get to go riding.

what time do you guys normally turn up at the track?

well guys. i know everyone says it, but how much fun is it to have a full blown attack on a track. i had a great time. will definitely have to be there next week.
Devo, any idea when the pics will be up. i wouldn't mind having a look.
with any luck i'll have the video up soon, just got to figure out how to compress it to something less than 160meg for a 10 min clip. i'll get there.

don't worry i didn't overtake you.. (i waited for you to go past then haunted you for a few laps) but when you let me past that's when it all went wrong. just like we spoke about, gotta go faster once you get past someone.

nah, i better go to work today, i'm hoping to get to the next monday one but we'll see how we go.

YouTube - Motards at Willowbank Kart Track 14.07.07

i haven't seen the quality on utube yet, i should have been at work a few minutes ago. doh.. but if it will let you jus watch the last 2-3 mins, it's nearly 10 long, i made it for a road bike mate to show him how fun it is..
don't laugh, it was a 20 min editing job..

devo

Ha, it's too dark to see my wobbly riding, that video looks like the next Saw film, . Day time footage might be better. ;)

Danielle has kindly put up a few of those pics.

looks like you had a good night, the vid's a bit dark but I know where the track goes so it's no problem for me. I hear the session was pretty empty, good for tracktime but not so good for Dave.

I need another Motard. I've even been contemplating a Mini so I can get some tracktime!

ruderbager
16-07-2007, 09:40 PM
yeah the footage should turn out heaps better through the day, i just wanted to see how it went. i'll have to find a better format to compress it, that video on my computer was nearly 60mg with a res of about 320*240 so at 640*480 which is how it records it'd be huge. the first cut was just over 1.2gig..

anyway, that's a hell of a flash on that camera, it's very clear.
i better get myself organised and get those skateboard wheels done now.. i'm just wondering if there is any way to put a small loop of stuff over each barkbuster to stop the metal hitting on the ground next time. i'll have a think about it anyway.

devo
17-07-2007, 09:37 AM
Combination of colder weather and the fast guys being down at Oran Park I think. There's been some big weeks recently though.

Brendan, there are specific bark busters which come with replaceable sliders on the ends, have a look at those and you might be able to copy it. It's not a huge deal though, mine have had maybe 5 crashes and they look to have more than a few left in them before they're ground away.

ruderbager
17-07-2007, 05:51 PM
something simple like a thick ziptie would do the job i reckon. not sure if i could be arsed really doing anything about it though. not yet anyway.

isn't there a race at warwick this weekend as well? might be quiet again this saturday? either way i'll be there to have a look.

how did you go on monday devo?

devo
17-07-2007, 05:57 PM
The road racing at Warwick is on the long track, so motards might be giving that one a miss.

Monday was good, finally ran into Ash (cornerspeed). No really fast guys for me to hold up in the dirt, though I did hold up a few slow guys.

Cya on sat.

ruderbager
18-07-2007, 09:35 PM
phew.. i just had a second look at the brisbane weather forecast for saturday and it went from rainy to reasonably warm.
my ma license finally turned up today. so that's another piece of the puzzle finally sorted.
still not sure what' i'm going to do about the sliders. i reckon there has to be another way for me to mount them but i think i might just end up drilling the axles like everyone else.

devo, did you end up having a go at the zellamid?
i haven't been talking to pete this week so not sure if he's keen on the drive down on saturday or not.

aand, what tyres were you running before you got those maxxis slicks?

aaand, when is the next monday ride? are they fortnightly? and do you reckon you'll be going to one again soon devo?
that'll do for now i think. i'll probably have a few more q's for you on saturday.

devo
18-07-2007, 11:10 PM
havent had a chance with the zellamid. busy busy busy.

I was using the much famed avon distanzias. I liked them, but track days kill them fairly quickly and they're no substitute for a slick. Really good on the road though, good traction in the wet.

Mondays are 1st and 3rd monday of each month. 3 weeks away till next one. I'll be at the next one.

ruderbager
19-07-2007, 07:37 PM
righto well i should be able to get to the next one as well.

ruderbager
26-07-2007, 07:40 PM
hmm. wonder why. i was kinda hoping someone else got one so i wouldn't be the one to blame when it's not on..

nah, just wanted to make sure. i just had a look at his website and he hasn't changed the calendar but has put a note scrolling across the top of the page so that makes me a bit happier.
and i was supposed to play indoor cricket sat arvo but i am out of that now so i'm all sorted.[/img]

right. well that's the last time i give you help with your suspension devo...
i was no match for you last night.
looks like if i'm going to buy another set of slicks i'd need to buy some tyre warmers as well. seems like a lot of mucking around though.
mind if i ask how much you paid for those?

what's the go with the monday ones devo. are they much the same as the saturday ones + dirt or are they only a few different groups of motards?

i don't want to go out and get in the fast guys way when they are practicing for the race next weekend if there will only be 1 group of motards.

devo
30-07-2007, 01:05 PM
Motards only, no real groups, you just head out whenever you want. If there's juniors there then they get dedicated time as we're not allowed to run with juniors. 10 till 4 with the dirt, then night session 4 till ?? tarmac only.

devo

why do you guys go and watch why not just have a go ??? sounds like you have been there and some some trackdays so just turn up and race , if you think trackdays are fun wait untill you race another 30 guys into that first corner    biggest rush you will ever have .
i had a mate come and race at the last round of the british your morning time puts you in your class and grid position for the day he ended up 123 out of 127 so he was back row of the D group by the end of the day he finished 9th in the D's he had a smile on his face like he had won the day , its all about getting out there and just having a go :D :D :D :D it will make a lot better rider not to mention the most fun you will ever have

I'll speak for at least myself. It scares me Shane. That first corner mayhem, never done anything like it. No racing to my name as yet, so it'll definitely be a learning experience.

If I come out of next weekend all grins then I'll be joining in on the peer pressure to get the rest of the guys in on it. I know for sure that Brendan and Paul have got more natural talent than me, so no excuses there. ;)

Lots of respect for Jovian gettin in there.

aah comeon guys. i wouldn't mind having a go, but i might get more than 2 practice days in before i go racing i think..
depending on how things go i'll be seriously looking at racing next year. there aren't many rounds left up here this year as far as i know.
i reckon i'll have a go at some point, just need to get used to the bitumen again, and motards..
i just got back from my first round of the qld enduro championships, and it is a fair bit different even going racing out in the bush. compared to just trail riding.

yeah i got home in 1 piece, can't say that for our bikes though. the guy i went with hit a tree with his header pipe and radiator at about 20k's. crushed the header and bent the rad. was able to ride it out though.

i'm bloody exhausted. that's the first time i have tried anything like that and it wasn't until the last lap that i found out that the special tests were optional.. doh. most of them were about 10k's. i really could have used a few minutes rest between each session. i was on the bike going hard for just over 4hrs with only about 15 rest in all that. i need to get fit. i'll be suprised if i can walk tomorrow.

ruderbager

I think it's first in best dressed for the power, as it is very limited. Not sure. Trying to find a generator atm.
