View Full Version : pipe suggestions for an SM610
Ive seen quite a few posts on how the stock husky is pretty blocked up. What pipe is suggested and how many $ are we looking at?

I've got the leo vince slip on and its quite nice, though a little rough around a few edges (end cap arrangement isnt quite so neat as I'd like). Ash has the Barret slip on, made in Qld I think. The leo is about 650 or abouts and the barret is 500 last time I checked. Both seem like excellent pipes and I certainly noticed the difference with it on and jetted.....

Either of the Arrow or Akrapovic Ti cans would be my choice.

There was another one on SMJ with those Carroziera(spelling?) wheels and an underseat exhaust which looked really nice as well. I'll post the pic when I'm at home.

The Barret is easy as good as the others at a good price! Support an Aussie when you can!
I've got a full Staintune system on my (older) SM610. Sounds great (LOUD  ), but never rode it with the orginal, so can't comment on performance improvements...

And what about the rejetting... how much can one expect to pay?

Neil has the jets written down so I'd start there. I can't really remember but I'd say you'd have change out of $30

The stock pilot we get over here is fine so all you really need to do is replace the main jet with a 180 which should be about 15 bucks or something around that. You can also change the needle but that will probably mean buying a JD kit for 150 bucks or something, which is what I did but really isn't worth it...
Well, i just bought one. an 06 sm610 with 3000k's on the clock. Perfect condition and all stock.
So it looks like i'll be looking for a barret exhaust, those fandangled wheels on the last page (which look awsome but im sure are waaay to expensive) and nmilne can rejet it for me!
Who can teach me to tune this puppy?

Congratulations Nerb, welcome to the dark side of the tard. :)
Those fandangled wheels cost a small fortune, they are available through Roadrocket or B-Comp or alternatively you can get them from OS yourself. They are somewhat over the AUD$2k mark...Closer to $3k actually. Depends where you get them.
Got any pics of your new trusty steed yet?
nup. I pick it up next week, probly tue or wed. Then i'll get some pics... however it just looks like every other 610.

Nice one brendan
First up is just the pipe - order through your local dealer or direct off the web for barret. Then order a 180 jet for a kehin FCR41 (just a standard kehin jet) and a CR8EIX platinum plug. Once you've got that its just a matter of pulling off the standard can and sticking the new one on, undoing the airbox and pulling it out the side (easy job) and popping the carb off. New jet in, unplug TPS, check needle position and stick the new plug in. Job done

Grey or White/Red?
SMC690
17-05-2007, 11:37 PM
unplug TPS
Oh, I thought the TPS factor was a fallacy.
I have back to back dyno graphs on mine with TPS connected and disconnected and it made SFA difference.
It may be a different story on the Husky though.

The is a miss at either 3500 or 4500 rpm on the Husky with the TPS connected!

Yep, diff between the KTM and husky ... not performance related, its annoyance related...
its a grey one. I actually quite like the red/white, but never saw one for sale.
So no tuning required after the jet goes in? I forgot how simple a carby is....

Well i got it. Rode it 35k's home last night and 20k's to work this morning.
First impressions... COLD. I never realised how well you can hide behind a sportbike fairing.
Second was the immense lack of power. Its strange, it feels like heaps of grunt from 0 to 30kph, but then you gotta change gears. Im used to getting to 130kph before worrying about changing gears. Ive never hit the rev limiter so many times in one trip in my life.
Third, who says motards are easy to wheelie? There must be a different style to the gsxr. I used to open the throttle and the front would start climbing, but now when i do that, the front wheel is only an inch of the ground and that damn rev limiter cuts in. Looks like the clutch needs to be used.
I'll get some photos tonight and add a post to the "my bike pics" section.

Dont be despondent Brendan.
Sounds to me like you have yourself a bog stock, uncorked 610.
They are usually quite snappy on the throttle and easily loft the wheel in third under power.
Give it a chance to grow on you and get it to the dyno tuners after the pipe, airbox and jets have been done.
Its a whole new power spread to the Gixxer,
Half the cubes and a quarter the cylinders.
You didnt test ride it first!? Congrats though, should have some fun learning the ins and outs of it. :D
But yeah, gotta kick through those gears. Mine tops out at 140 with the current gearing, and that's a 6 speed.
Wheelies.... try cracking the throttle open from lower revs. Really low revs. Damn near to idling in fact. With no tug on the bars and no technique you should be power wheelieing at anything below 60.
I did test ride it, but just around some back streets. Not for a long ride.
I didnt mean to sound negative, its just different and i'll get used to it.
Practically no vibes though. Feels smooth as a..... something smooth.

Love the red and white one but due to my riding style decided stealth would be the go!
Hey Brendan if you put a 16t on the front 1st and 2nd work better which is good around town. The other thing is it will sit on 130 all day. The down side is that in the upper gears it won't pull as hard. Your choice

If the bike feels like its asleep until about 4500-5000rpm, then it starts to come to life and then hits the limiter in quick succession, well that's what a corked 610 feels like. The muffler and jetting will fix that problem to the point that you should be able to wheelie in 2nd just by grabbing a bunch of throttle with maybe a bit of a tug on the bars, or simply by the snap on/off thinggy...

This is a 450, but is there any difference in the exhaust besides mounting points? ie, if i just want a flat oval exhaust, can i use any? Like a cbr600rr undertail exhaust?
Im talking about the muffler only... obviously the pipe is a different shape.

The challenge is getting it incorporated into the tail section. That bike above has the exhaust poke through the rear guard. I believe the 610 has more stuff under the rear though...
what ur looking for there is custom carbon fibre......................
Muzzard
26-05-2007, 09:44 AM
Any chance of a picture of under the rear guard on a stock one Neil ;)
Then we can see what room there is to work with.
The bloody tail light is the biggest issue I forsee, but thought about one of those nifty little stamped metal universal units to hold a numberplate, and replicating it with the necessary length in the mounts to hold both the tail light, indicators and the number plate.
Tail lights are an issue and there is a host of LED units in different shapes avaliable.
For a street motard and underseat,
I think the best advantage would be to make your own case and go along the route Aprilia has with twin outlets or one big one on the side.
I had posted a picture into the gallery of a KTM fitted with a home made looking pipe,
Everyone went YUK! I liked it, it was a Silmotor prototype pre Aprilia anyway and would be ideal.
I'll see if I can find it...

Theyve just removed the whole undertail section and even the airbox by the looks of it. Not so good offroad or in the wet.

Just the ticket Brendan.
I would be certainly into the Jardine like a rat up a drain pipe.
Easy to fabricate the mid pipe, heaps of room if you make the can the right length to fit the cavity without sticking out too far.
Its only the bracketing which is also as easy an oval sling with mounts each side to go up to the undertail pressing that is already there.
Tail light isnt too much of an issue really given the indicators can really stay where they are, and like I said theres a host of aftermarket ones.
MCS have a shitload in the catalogue so that might a good place to start.
I think you would need to be at a dealers prepared to let you peruse the book to find what you want, I dont think MCS have a website as they are only wholesalers.
The Honda unit you have pictured is cool and there would be others as well surely along a similar line

Looks the shit guys but what happens if you loop it?
All the hard work would be destroyed in an instant.
Wobbly
26-05-2007, 08:22 PM
My thoughts too ... personally I'd be going with a fairly standard slip-on and a pipe slider if need be...
In terms of the aprilia, I'd love to see a system that has a mid-pipe that incorporates a baffle of sorts and then just two slash cut end pipes that jut up into the rear area under the hugger. Now that would look, and no doubt sound, horn
Wobbly
26-05-2007, 08:30 PM
Here's another though - side pipes :) A muffler/collector that sits underneath the subframe and uses that for protection but has the exits on either side exhausting in the fore section in front of the rear indicators :D
If you looped it, a $600 pipe would probably be the least of your problems. Subframe lights and plastics would be a lot more than that.
The pipe can stop short like in Tambi's pic anyway.

Just rip the original pipe off, leave it coming straight out of the headers, take a can of harden the fuck up and go riding. ;)
Them muffler things just add weight anyway.
