View Full Version : Dave's Broadford experience

Well i should start this along the lines of..."Thanks for the back up you bunch of pussies".... but i wont be that unkind since everybody has there own priorities. :P So i have been having nightmares about this day for the past week, not about falling off but about a sportbike knocking me off. I hopped on the bike this morning & my fears left me. Got to the track about 8.30, was foggy all the way, by the time everybody was ready & the briefing at 9.45 the fog had lifted. I chose the slow group, so did half the bloody field but anyway. Yellow flags for the first 4 laps to get everything warm & it was on. New track, new experience for me, the dr ate up the corners no probs, sporties left me on the straights but i gained it back. 1st session, only had maybe 4 bikes pass me, but that changed in later sessions. TT we use 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear( i do anyway) but Broadford was nothing under 3rd gear, most corners were 4th gear, only 3rd gear corner was what they call crash corner, it's tight & off camber, is a good corner for us motard guys to show our stuff but not for me today. Being so used to TT every corner was foot out, 2nd nature, i had to try hard to keep my foot on the pegs & ride like a roadie, it did slow me down a little to start with but by the end of the day i only had my leg out for crash corner. I was really dissapointed that i was the only motard there, i had no one to pace myself with, i diced with some of the sporties for sure, they get me on the straights & i got them back again through the corners but it would have been a whole lot better if some more motards were there. There were 3 accidents for the day, all riders walked away thankfully, but these plastic bikes just dont take the knocks, 1 of the fellas on an R1 came in swearing, an oggy knob punctured through a fairing, no gear lever or footpeg, & a lot of mud. On 3 occasions i ran out of "is that track or talent" :) coming into corners a little too hot, but managed to keep it upright on the dirt, of course, lots more peg dragging & another peg bolt grinding scare  There were a couple of jerks there(always someone to spoil the day) who thought it fun to blow past a slower rider within inches, if they take themselves out so be it but involving me well, thankfully it didn't happen but i certainly voiced my opinions when i got back to the pits, audible enough for everyone to hear. I let everyone know at every oppurtunity, for a 40hp bike i was doing pretty well, they could only get past me once per 15 minute session, even at the lunch session with both slow & medium riders combined. Apart from my coupla scares & the jerks i had a reasonably good day at it, i survived, the dr survived so it's all good. Will i go back???? If some of you guys come with me yes, but really, i enjoy TT more. Hopefully i may have some pics to put up some time soon, maybe even some video, i have probably forgotten a whole lot more that i can tell you but will make up for it later, maybe :)

Good stuff mate, great that you were able to fly the flag. Don't worry about the wankers, they're always around. Like the bloke who thought it would be good to shoulder me on the exit of hayshed at the island when he was on his R1 and me on the little KR. They're always there trying to prove to themselves what big guys they are - well apart from the being too scared to run in the fast groups part anyway ;)

Good to hear you had a good day Dave.
You dont need to worry about blokes passing you too close mate,
They are trying to look at your nice wheels

Its ego reinforcement for them to pass close,
It makes them feel faster

I was really impressed with dave and his big DR the first couple of sessions we were fighting it out he had the mighty sprint bluffed on corners  the starights were mine all mine at 200 i think the dr ran out :D by the end of day we were close to equal by the time i had the sprint sorted there was no passing by either.
Dave you did a top job of riding that dr on it's new shiny rims  who needs rubber hey dave

Muzz i'm sure you would be proud of me, talk about wearing down the sidewalls  Shame that Broadford wears down the same side that TT does :? need to run it in reverse that would slow em down

Good work Dave.
Broadford's an excellent mid sized track and it's mint for givng the tard a decent run as opposed to the tight constraints of the TT track.
Good on ya dude!

for a 40hp bike i was doing pretty well, :)

You got the DR650 High Performance model Dave? Mine puts out 35hp.

Dave, dont worry about keeping your feet on the pegs. I know that boot out and backing it in scares the shit out of road bike riders, as they think someone has crashed behind them. So they leave a big gap to stick it up the inside!!!!

So do we want to set a date in a few months time for a mass motard attack at Broadford?

Nice report Dave, sounds like you had a great time - Of course I'm not even slightly jealous that you got to ride Broadford and the only big track I've got to look forward to is Qld Raceway :-( (At least there will be 3 trackdays a month in winter at the Ipswich Kart track- Woohoo!)

You were always going to get killed on the straights so no surprise there - the real surprise comes from seeing the level of improvement over the day and how some of the quicker guys don't seem quite as quick. No excuse for the wankers though - you don't have to be a Buddhist to understand Karma, they'll get what's coming to them. I've never experienced anyone behaving like that, perhaps they see my riding and decide to keep the hell away!

How was the ride home? last time I did Broady I was completely knackered and I only had to ride for 90kms!

We've got Coffs Harbour, Stanthorpe and Warwick with tracks open at select times too Supa. Road trip perhaps.

Daves just a lightweight so it would feel like 40.
Your a bit bigger Tony and so should feel like 35

Thanks all for the replies & encouragement, would be great if we could get a track full of motards out there............ maybe one day.
Supa, Broadford is about half the distance that TT is, no worries getting home, Broadford isn't as much hard work as TT is, although i must admit i was glad to get off after a 1/2 hour session. You are right, over the course of the day some of the sporties just weren't, my last session i got passed once by a bling bling worked sp2, but showed him his mistake in the following corners. I had no trouble with taking the outside line to go past some of them, got a bit hairy on occasions when we're 3 abreast, gets a bit tight, even my brother cut me off on one corner. So all in all i held my own, but like i say, would be nice if vsmr could do a day, unfortunately for it to be affordably to us all we would need at least 20 of us, i dont see that happening with the way you lot commit :P
Vicko says we should have some pics by the end of the week  i hate waiting, Fiona (Anthony's wife) took some photos & video footage so as soon as i get my mits on it will post it up for guys.
Tony, the guys at thumpertalk say the 650 puts out 43hp, mine runs pretty shitfull so i said 40 8)

It might still be better to get in on the back of the mcnews guys, and of course invite the net rider fags!!

Devo - road trip sounds like a plan, I'll be in touch when I get back from the UK in the middle of next month, I'm sure Rob would be keen too.

Dave - It's hard to take the mighty DR seriously with the smiley face on the headlight surround! The front looks so much better with the short guard - Who was the guy on the SP2? was it Red Bull stickered?

WOOLO

Broadford looks like fun Dave,if you could tee up a mass motard outing I would make a good effort to get down south for it with plenty of notice ofcourse. What do you need to run at Broadford and is it only 30 - 45 mins from Seymour or has my Lebanese taxi driver syndrome kicked in again ?

dangermouse1100
01-05-2007, 09:10 PM
The smiley face is there so people laugh for a sec & stop being so darned serious :) honestly so many people are so damn busy they forget what a smile is. If it makes someone smile then its working 8), didn't notice any redbull stickers on the sp2.
Woolo, Broadford is about 20kms from Seymour, yes it would be great if we could get a mass interstate motard meet. Scrutineering consisted of taping up lights, blinkers, mirrors & checking no oil leaks & all controls working, helmets, back protectors, leathers, boots n gloves.

01-05-2007, 09:30 PM
You have to wear a back Protector?

shane
01-05-2007, 09:51 PM
yes flash its a must no back protector no riding or racing , aus ,uk and europe its all the same , as well as no MX style gear

Muzzard
01-05-2007, 09:58 PM
Correct me here if I am wrong but I was of the opinion that the internal back protection inside most leathers complies with GCR.
That is sewn in panels or slip in foam type inserts.

TONY

Random thoughts.

I've done Broadford twice with Champions Ride days. Cost is $110 each for a group of 6 or more. Good value for a good track. Be more ideal for Supermoto if the straights were shorter, but I'm dreaming.

Back protector is not mandatory, but I recommend it anyway. Also, you're meant to pass on the outside only. In theory, it's a ride day, not a race meeting.

I'ii look at Thumpertalk. Want the DR650 43 HP model! Everything's bigger in the States?

shane
01-05-2007, 10:03 PM
they ask to see a back protector when you have your bike and gear checked

dangermouse1100
01-05-2007, 10:26 PM
They didn't ask to see it but did give you a pat on the back just to check your leathers, some wore separate protectors, others like me just rely on whats built into the leather jacket.

WOOLO
01-05-2007, 10:37 PM
Full leathers or a leather jacket and Draggin jeans ?

dangermouse1100
01-05-2007, 11:15 PM
Full leathers, draggins not allowed

Sibbo
02-05-2007, 08:11 AM
Also, you're meant to pass on the outside only.
Only in the lower groups, the faster group you are allowed to stick it up the inside. :D

The days I have been to Broadford, they have not asked to see my back protector, but I think it sticks out a bit in the suit, so I think they assume I must be wearing one.

05sprint
02-05-2007, 01:18 PM
I think it has a lot to do with the group you are riding with or who organised the day. champions don't worry about the back protectors as long as you are in leathers.
the smaller groups seem to want a little more for saftey
as for passing on the inside the group we were with 3 bikes that passed on the inside they got black flagged that was in the slower group
not sure if you aware of that Dave 1 was sent home pitty it wasn't the meathead that was on the green ninja he came close to taking out 3 of us on crash corner

dangermouse1100
02-05-2007, 07:42 PM
I was aware of the rule, passing outside only which was the only way for me to go because all the sporties hogged my lines or got in the way  I remember Fiona saying someone was black flagged, wasn't aware they were sent home. The way i see it if there gonna play dangerous in the slow group, then stop being a pussie & go up to the fast group. Good on the crew for sending the prick home  As Supa said, Karma will catch up to them.

Nice one Dave, nice credits!

You have a much more purposeful riding style than your bro' perhaps it's because you have to try harder on the straight due to the slight HP defecit.
