Ok so the story goes ive hit 5,000k's on the 640sm so she needs a major service and desperately a new rear tyre. the coming weekend i have a few rides to do and theres no way im going to rack up the money in 5 days (i am a uni student and am working in a volunteer job).

my warranty runs out in the end of April (only two months). so the question is wait the few weeks until i have the money and pay to get it serviced then run a slick for a little till i can replace that. or service it myself and put a rear tyre on it then it can be ridden. any ideas I'm really just looking for people to make up my mind for me so i don't have to.

Also how many people here pay for services compared to do it themselves. this is the first vehicle ive ever paid for servicing for.

thanks Kroosn

put the tyre on, service yourself. i occasionally get a service from bike shop and have service at intervals different to 5000 and they still stamped ny book.

i would change oil and tyre yourself
Then get major service done at shop and request complete inspection before end of warranty. covered both ways

pff! do all your own servicing. Dealers are just a rip. Labour costs are too high.

Takes no time to change your oil, filter, check valve clearances & air filter. thats all thats important really.
I dont check anything else until it breaks.

When I was looking at buying a KTM they said I could service the bike myself and keep the warranty on the bike...

yeah im going to service it myself on tuesday. ive rebuilt a bandit motor and quite a few dirt bike motors i dont think it will be hard to do the valves. anyhow am going to order the tyre tomorrow aswell.

You should know better than to trust what a dealer tells you when they are trying to make a sale. ;)
