It's great thanx Neil, a bit busy at work at the moment so not much time for riding, but i've heard that Trevor Hedge (Cockburn track) and the guys who run the Wannaroo track are running a 6 race series over autumn/winter this year so I am looking forward to that.
Oh, the weather is shit, we get 14.5hrs of sunshine each day and it hasen't rained for about 7 weeks.....

Sounds horrible!
There's been a bit of talk about that over at wasupermoto.com and it sounds promising, though I think trev had to reign it back from a 6 round series to initially just a single round because of MA. Still, sounds like there's some good action to be had over there with the organized track days at the two tracks...!

Why move all the way to W.A. for a bit of racing? A few of us should form a nominees company and run our friggin own!... DECA in Shepparton could be a good venue, seeing it already has 2 motard tracks with dirt sections in situ... Or we could contract track time on either a Kart track such as GPTC (hint, hint)... or pick up a midweek track day at Winton for a measley $2200 :!: .... Mmmm, thats 20 riders @ $110 each and you dont have to share with them 4 wheeled oil droppers and those multicylinder Desmodronics!...So :?: ... Shit, we have even got a forum for track days on the site...Muzz...

I agree ... track days are probably a viable thing to get going ... once of the problem with some of the motard track days is that there's a lot of people that live between melbourne and frankston, so track days up in shep, benella, bairnsdale, etc are all a bit of a hike for people.
However, there are a bunch of go-kart tracks not that far out from these locations, such as the GPTC, and I'm wondering how many have been approached to host motard track days, even pure tarmac at least to get a start on things.
A few ones closer to the city that I crawled over in my quick search were:
South Morang (the GPTC of course)
http://www.grandprixtrainingcentre.com.au/images_content/aerial_view.jpg
Port Melbourne (under the westgate bridge)
http://vsmr.net/albums/misc/pt_melbourne_track_photo.jpg
Puckapunyal (just a bit north of broadford)
http://vsmr.net/albums/misc/puckapunyal_track_photo.jpg
Oakleigh
http://vsmr.net/albums/misc/oakleigh_track_diagram.gif
All the track diagrams and track info are available at the victorian karting association web site - http://www.vka.asn.au/ - except for the GPTC, which is at http://www.grandprixtrainingcentre.com.au/
If we could get a regular haunt worked out then we'd just need to sort out indemnity cover and work out what the sort of demand is. The GPTC is probably the best bet, as they already do the evening/night time motard practice thing, they'd probably be the most likely to consider a full day track day, (which would likely be cheaper than winton?) and probably already have cover arrangements.
Who takes care of the current arrangements with the GPTC with respect to the tuesday night motard prac? Anyone?

In regards to the gokart tracks if you I'll give you a bit of an over view, albeit a little old-
Oakleigh - this is the longest established track in Melbourne and used to have the biggest member base and also have the most money. There is a bit of land there to play with as far as a dirt section goes, and on top of this there is a few places that you could leave the track (to go to dirt) and come back on with minimal disturbance to the asphalt (there is a run through for the rolling starts)
Westgate - This track is a international standard track which will make it very hard to get access to use it for motard, there would be conditions to protect the condition here for sure. There also isn't any spare land for a dirt section.
Puckapunyal - This is the newest of them all and again this track is international standard so you would have the same problem, But there is a fair bit of land here. I havn't raced at this track it's a bit new for me but I went there last year to watch the Australian championship and it could be a good venue it's as well setup as Oakleigh.
I think the best venues would be Oakleigh and Puckapunyal but really if any of them give us the go ahead it would be good. :D

Have you been out to south morang ash? I had a look-see last year and it looked ok, be interested to hear what you think if you've punted a cart around it...

No I haven't been there. I've only been to tracks where I could compete, ie club tracks. I planned to go over for the last motard night last year but I was in Sydney

With all those tracks to go at how come you guys can't get a round of the so called "Australian Championship" or at least a couple of state rounds going.

Nigel,
The biggest obstacle to motard in Victoria is in my opinion the previous commitee of the SRCA. Because of sloppy admin and half cocked plans, the VKA is motard shy! Accordingly we are now at the disadvantage of being guilty by association. Having said that we are VSMR, not SRCA, so that is a benefit/quality-inferior loss statement batting for us!
Most of the Kart tracks are strictly Kart because of insurance issues, but Northern Knights at Puckapunyal may look at tarmac only as I have had previous talks with one of their members while discussing the use of the Benalla Aerodrome. He is the Planning Officer for the Delatite Shire and very motorsport savvy. Might be worth a serious meeting of those serious about taking this further?...

Yep I'll dig out my suit and polish up the tech 8s and I'll be there.
On a serious note though, I think the most imprtant thing is to let them know that we wont damage the track (I believe this would be a major issue) and that we would be able to share the track and facilities with no dificulties.

Unfortunately Nigel, Like I have already said, We are at the disadvantage of being lumped together with Clown and Co. (previous commitee/promoter) It will take some good selling to get over the bad taste in their mouths, and lets see how the Summer Series goes. Bets are on for the rounds to be dropped like flies. Well, have we any other example in Victoria? I hope Smokingun Supermoto pick up the promoting in Victoria as the other options have already shown that they cant organise a root in a brothel with a handful of 50's!...Whether at State or National level!
