Well, not quite - but for current purposes, might as well be,

Rode out to cranbourne this evening, and almost the way there, bike suddenly lost all power, spat out some black smoke and stopped.

It now has very little compression, so I can push the kick starter all the way with my hand. Turns over fine with electric and kick (not seized). Giving it some throttle makes flames come out exhaust (getting spark).

My guess is a valve stuck open, probably bent?
Anyone want to weigh in with conjecture on fault and possble repair method/cost?

Anyone got a pushie in decent condition I can borrow for a few months?

sounds like it could be a valve. What sort of noise did it make?

Only really got a DH bike but there not real friendly to ride at all except down big hills. Neil has nicly collecting dust in his garage though ;)

Hmmm, doesn't sound good.

The valve sounds possible or the decomp might be stuck open a little, check the cable.
I can check through the manual later after I get home from work if you don't have a copy for other possible idea's.
I can also drop past your place on the way home to help diagnose, give me a call if you want a hand.

It doesn't sound like the flux capacitor though. ;)

Sounds like its dropped/bent a valve,
or at least its being held open by some means.

Rip off the exhaust header and have a looksee with a torch,
Same goes at the carburettor end mate...

There seems to be a few issues with KTM's at the moment. I thought they were meant to be bullett proof.

Yeah, we ride our bikes, they wear out. ;)
Who said they were bulletproof?
You've been speaking to the wrong bloke.

Ash, they are bullet proof but that only stops bullets breaking the bike... Riding it, that's a different mater!

flames out the exhaust, backfiring but wont start?. Thats what the DR did when it dropped the pilot screw. Similar problem when one of the vacuum hoses was pinched.

Fark, not another one. You can check out exhaust valves by taking the exhaust headers off and rotating the motor over and seeing if one sticks. I'm assuming no external oil leaks anywhere around base/head gaskets of course. Bugger mate :(

Yeah, my thought is a valve. Any ideas on how hard it is replace all the valves?

Ash - it was making an extra kinda phut sound, about a minute before it died, no obvious loss of power though.
Will try the carby and exhaust off, thanks guys.

Justin, I've got the manual here, haven't had a chance to play yet this weekend, sun evening might be the go. Decomp valve would be nice!

Whip the head cover off, and take a look see at the clearances - and see whats going on. Not that big a job to fix as long as no barrel or head damage etc

Yep, as rob says, valves are normally fairly straight forward, if you need a valve compressor I can lend you one no probs. Good excuse to have your ports looked at and stick in bigger valves of course, along with that big bore job and FCR41 you'll be needing ;)

Thinking back to a few other small problems I have seen with an LC4 that was used daily as a courier bike you may have broken the exhaust rocker or done a cam support bearing.
More likely the rocker of the two.

I saw that LC4 in a particular shop in Melbourne - Apparently it was going to be a horrendous wait for the rocker (6+ weeks?)

lol, it's not the parts supply Paul, it's just the (dis/un/bad)management of the place. They had the rocker in in under 2 weeks if not less. The parts guy was on the ball and ordered it immediatley as the courier was a mate of his and he didn't want him delivering parcels for long on his SuperDuke. ;)
Shithouse is a compliment when it comes to their management.
When I mentioned warranty repairs to my base gasket they told me they wanted to keep my bike for 3 months after the service date.
How does 'Get f*cked sound?'
I booked my bike in there in the first week of January and it's still not time to take it in for a simple service yet.
When they ring me next week to say 'Why didn't you come in for your service?' I will be telling them it's already done plus the warranty work...

...And how does 'jam it up your jexie' sound for any future $ they may try extracting from me.

I have so much dirt on those pricks, if only I had the bollocks to unleash it, lol.

I will be giving this Western Burbs dealer a real good wrap when I get my bike back at the end of the week if all goes well. :)

Any Moto shop in town will just let you down,
even if you tell them you have a championship deciding
race meet next week they will leave things to the last minute if not at all.

and not even ring you!

I would like to see many of them out of business for good

We'll excuse ya Doogs,
Only for your keen-ness mate ;)

Besides what happened in the end anyway Angus,
Did it ever go again or is it sitting in the hallway gathering dust :?
