View Full Version : Bairnsdale Track Day...

OK, Those of us who attended the track day at Wodonga obviously enjoyed ourselves as the pictures at Ash's motel will attest  and there should be another the day prior to the second round at Bairnsdale on the 30 April... :D

Attendance.
Should be as per Wodonga with those wishing to take part in the track day download the appropriate documentation from www.supermotard.com.au and forward them to Neil for collation at least a week prior to the event...

Machines.
Attention should be given to making your bike as compliant with the GCR's as possible with the exception of the lockwiring of caliper bolts and removal of coolant unless stipulated by track owners/operators...

Clothing/Protective gear.
Paul made mention that DRI RIDER styled clothing would have been acceptable and we need to get clear instruction prior to the event as this will open the door for those with bikes but no leathers and wanting to try motarding...

Street wise promotion.
Post for the ride day on other forums as there would be some that would take advantage of the opportunity if protective gear was relaxed also. Maybe push a new flyer into the bike shops of Ringwood again, only pushing the 'street riders' aspect as we have become known...

All that failing I'll see you there, probably as I pass you!

Muz, another great idea. Can we download a brochure or similiar so it can be downloaded and printed by various of us and put in promanent places. I'll put them at work, in the local community areas and bike shops, although you do realise the more people we have there the harder it will be to catch me :supz:

Nice Avatar Danno, The more the merrier, thats when I start to use more 'alternative lines'. Doesn't slow me down, just offers more sport!
If you are keen to do flyers, Neil has some header artwork I think he would share to allow some creative license to you if you want to design one...

Yup! There's a reasonable bit in the gallery, esp under the misc area, and I can provide all the full sized originals if you're interested :D

I plan to be there, and in fact I will tell the boss I can't work that weekend
(Hope he listens hey Sibbo).
What would be good if we can list a "total cost for the weekend" rather than dribs and drabs. Some of us have to plan for the costs and if we get to the weekend and find that we need another 100 bucks that might be a problem.
I will mention it to Steve to I think he will be in it as he has his Motard wheels and his suspension.
Hey Neil what gearing do you run?

Wobbly
24-03-2005, 11:26 PM
15/41 on the road ... you can go lower, I think down to 38 or 36, as the rear sprocket is the same as some other suzukis. 41 works fairly well though.

This week we will try to get something solid from Paul regarding both the longevity of the series and further info about Bairnsdale and track regulation concerning us as recreational riders as such...
My thoughts is the rec licence should see the obstacle overcome from our angle, but doesnt stop admin hiccup like at Wodonga with the M.A. issue book for rec licences not available prior to our scheduled session, Traffic delays...
Accommodation has been tentatively booked in a nice spot in Bairnsdale...
We have a little bit of time to encourage others to make the effort like we did to Wodonga and reap the rewards of a good days track riding followed by,.. Beer and KFCats! :D or, Beer and fishing! :) or, Beer and B.S!
I know if I keep going with the beer thingys, at least Neil, Ash, Danno and Ol Smokey will be there!

Flash
28-03-2005, 01:47 PM
So if I go this right, the costs will be -
$85 per night divided by ?(amount of people)
$80 rec licence
+ food and drinks.

Now what about the bikes?
Carb over flow.
Do we need a fuel tank over flow?
Can we run coolant?
Do we have to lock wire sump etc?

Muzzard
28-03-2005, 08:22 PM
As far as bikes are concerned, mine is already done out of good preparation as I dont like to bin it at the best of times, let alone after doing a wheelstand , having the carb overflows spewing onto the tyre because the bike is not horizontal. Or have glycol on the tyre and engine oil from the rocker box breather.
All of advantage to you and the longevity of your bike if done correctly.
Doesnt hurt to be as prepared as possible as this will afford you the opportunity to enter almost any track in the country without heaps of hassle. :D
As far as costs are concerned You have it with the cabin, the more in, the cheaper per head :) Rec licence will need to be obtained through M.A. prior to event, if thats what you decide to do. I would recommend it as once again it lets you get access to track days/club events etc... for a bit of cheaper racing  ...

Flash
28-03-2005, 09:28 PM
OK I'll start lock wiring everything.
I would like to keep the glycol in it though.
I'll work an overflow out this week as well!
How do I get the MA rec licence? ( I'd like to get a full licence I have a few others to pay gokart pushbike local motocross club car club plus dog training plus, plus)
I will remove 1 or 2 next year and get the full licence.
Muzz do you know where I can get a rear hub for the YZ cheap?

Wobbly
28-03-2005, 10:02 PM
You can get an MA rec license from motorcycling victoria, $80 a year. A full comp license I think is around $350 a year if memory serves correctly. The difference is in the liability cost.

Lockwiring eh? Guess I'll need to find my lw pliers then ... and as for radiator, one thing you might also consider is something like 10/10ths, which is a non-glycol based additive which I believe MA allows? Catch bottles should be straight forward, and sliders can only help :D

I am beginning the planning for Bairnsdale now and to keep you in the loop I have organised,

A new quickshade. 20' x 10'
Accommodation for up to 6 drunks, and a cabin for the civilised...
Gas stove and brew making gear, BBQ, complete with waitress... (Tania) :-$
Sponsorship banners for between the posts of the shade to close it in a bit.
4 Plastic chairs as before
Helmet cam, that needs to be collected the week prior

We need,

A folding table
Fire extinguisher... hey Sibbo?
More concentrated effort to bottle compliance and general machine presentation at scrutineering...
Crash knobs liberally applied
Fishing gear for those who like bream and mullet...

Oh, and a stronger presence... :D

It seems as there may be a dirt section in the mix at Bairnsdale, but alas natural terrain so dont sweat it...
Neil, you will be a Crusty Demon when you finish this track day... instead of Crushedy Demon

Flash

If all goes to plan I will have a company vehicle (fingers crossed) I should be able to get the White table that I had at calder and I have a camping stove if required.
Oh I will also have a tent too.
Steve is keen to come along with his newly setup bike, slicks and all.
Muzz/Neil PM me if there is something else you think I can help with.

Wobbly
08-04-2005, 08:28 AM
I have no problem being crusty, its just the demon bit that I struggle with :D

Sounding like a plan ... although a bit of this...
BBQ, complete with waitress... (Tania) :-$
...might result in a bit of this...
:axe:

But of course there will also be a bit of this...
:drinkers: :drinking:

...quickly followed by some of this...
:partyman: :laughing_sign: :acid:

And if we're unlucky there's always some...
:puke: :toilet:  :coffee:

Muzzard
08-04-2005, 10:57 AM
The table would be cool Ash, we may not need the tent but if you have access to it , bring it anyway in the event of rain...
And dont forget to fill the track day drums on the fuel card!

You 2 will have fun on your slicks if they use the natural terrain part of the circuit...
Where as Neil and I with our Distanzias will mono straight past and cover you in roost! :butthead:

Muzzard
11-04-2005, 08:44 PM
Well unless we have real inclemate weather prior to and on the day of the track day, we have a dirt section at both Bairnsdale and Cobden.
Bairnsdale is sort of natural terrain if they use the same set up as the round of the 03 Champs...
Cobden is a new one so stay tuned and we will see if we cant get some insight into the track layout prior.
There is a move afoot amongst some members of VSMR to obtain track time close in to the city soon. Initial contact is being made with a view to running in particular mini motards, but by the track layout, would be excellent for full sized bikes on standard 'offroad' gearing...
One of the points we intend to cover is surface up upkeep/damage and will be making provision that ALL bikes to use the circuit (if allowed) will be fitted with sliders and bar end sliders as well...I consider that that coupled with bottling should see most obstacles overcome...

So now the big question is: How many of you are in a position to use this track weekly, and how many of you are prepared to put your money where your mouth is and put up some cash to secure rights to use/lease fees/track fees? As a group we have some credability, as individuals, we're just blokes with bikes...

This is still in its infancy so detail is still short on to bandy about...The old more the merrier seems to ring pretty true in these cases and suggest the same. As soon as we have some feedback all will be informed...
I dont expect it to be much, but the more we can muster the more 'buying power' we have, bearing in mind we are a not for profit group at present and really still only a bunch of blokes with bikes...
Let us be seen as a bunch of blokes with bikes and money! Also as a group of conforming enthusiasts, and that will see some further negotiation with more than just this one entity...
Please be patient with us here as we are all working full time jobs as well..

15-04-2005, 12:26 AM
OK, Once again unless I buy the place freehold ( offer of sale was not canvassed though!) its another NO GO...
Its looking more like an industrial building with sizeable building/warehouse and hard standing area in immediate vacinity...
The search continues...

Tyres...
No doubt most of you will have seen that the second hand tyre deals that Chris (BComponents) is offering VSMR members, and some of you have already taken advantage of that special... He has other tyres at the moment but limited quantities of this type. If you want some track day tyres see Chris soon...
For those on OEM wheels, in particular you fellas on 19"rears, you will be allowed to run dirt track tyres I believe as they are very soft and have minimal tread depth. A good option, although would be R.S at the end of the day...
This and a Avon Venom 90/90-21 front will do the job or any sport compounded 21" tyre of your preference. They are hard to find in softer compounds and the Venoms are relatively cheap as sport tyres go. They are available in 18" rears also but rare on the ground in Oz.

As per the Wodonga round, We will pre enter for track day interest to Paul collectively through Neil.
There is a form to fill in and email to Neil at least a week prior to the event and it will be posted up here shortly...

Track day prices are still TBC, and leave the licence detail blank, unless you possess an M.A/M.V licence and keep copy of form for use on the day... :P

Where the hell is this go kart track in bairnsdale. I come from there I dont know of one. But I do know they use to close down the streets and race go karts, cool huh?

Is it actually at lakes entrance, or maybe near where they held enduros last year?

To get to the track you do a right just before you get to bairnesdale then follow that along for a little while 2-3km's and you do another right then follow that for another couple of km's and you are there.

I raced the street meet down at bairnesdale many moons ago won a few races there also. The big problem was they used to put a radar there with a big digital screen up and I used to watch it to see how fast I was going. I never had any idea of the speeds I was doing and always got asked how fast they go, so it was good to be able to see the speed, but then it became a bit of a challenge to see if I could get a little quicker each time. I'd get on to the straight as smooth as posible and brake later each time, until............ I went a bit to wide and hit the marbles and slid into the tyre wall, I was lucky to keep the front wheel off the tyres and managed to get control quick and keep going. It was dumb to almost throw away such a big lead but I managed to get my 130 :D

Not bad for a 100cc lawnmower engine with no gearbox

Another reminder that the track day is approaching fast, and ask has,

All those intending on riding on the 7th completed pre entry registration form and forwarded it to Neil?
Attention if needed been given to the issue of track regulation and catch bottling of machines?
Anything to be borrowed from employers/friends been confirmed?
Those requiring track purpose tyres, get in touch with Chris now!

Pick up Video camera/Helmet cam. ( will email Pete today)

All your eskys been placed strategically by the back door? ...

Muzzard
27-04-2005, 10:58 PM
As it turns out, Pete has purchased a van and as I understand it will be making the trip down to shoot some photos and video both from the fence and on the track.
He certainly did a good job on the Calder Supermoto Masters pictures with 350 odd shots taken that day.
Bless his 'extreme sports' soul!

We have 10 days left, Hows the peg sliders and axle sets going Ash?..
I have some of the prototypes in the country at the moment but release from Customs is the time infringing issue at the moment, and I expect to get some of the 'out of the crate' pre re-engineered units prior to the prototypes I really want. Customs people have indicated that I may get them... Thursday night! Then I have to fit up street tyres, barkbusters and catch bottles, lock wire it and run them in, then load them for the track day by Friday noon...
Can be done if the bikes arrive on time.
I will email to the accommodation provider tomorrow for confirmation of booking..
Everyone riding sent forms to Neil yet? We will have a couple of blank ones there on the day for those not yet decided, and hopefully we generate some more casual riders for Saturday between now and then.
Supernumery to that,
I am hoping to start a supermoto/supermotard junior mentor program through VSMR soon and I will discuss this further with you all at the track day... :D

Just a heads up, my bike may not be ready for Bairnsdale. Took it in for service and they have a wait on parts... so I wait (2 weeks now). Seems KTM taking over has not been so kind to the dealers and will increase cost of repairs. Example, rollers need replacing on the rocker gear, use to be able to get rollers separate, the latest is the entire rocker arm.. and 4x the cost. Good thing it's not a 4/valve 4 cylinder :D So, might not have a ride for 7-8 May.. stay tuned.

Looks a bit sad for me too, but all is not lost, I have the WRF in bits on the bench finally after 37355KM and 515hours by meter, although it does have more on it as it wasnt fitted for a few months after purchase.
Well the verdict is,
Bottom end up rebuild to make for a new engine minus the piston and valves.
Still yesterday was 2 years on the road, of as some of you have seen, hard running for long miles. I never dreamt in my wildest drug fucked fantasy I would see this sort of longevity from this little engine.
So its with some solice that I ready the wallet just like Danno only twice the price I reckon. :?
I have a boxed engine prepared for such an occasion, but are reluctant to use it for a track day as it only lasts 5 hours maximum running time..

Picking up 2 bikes tomorrow from Customs and yep not the ones I really want,..as usual.. :x

So with the fact that the bike is out and small numbers from the Street Group this time round, I am going to also pass on the weekend as it is fruitless to take small wheel bikes and then not get an opportunity to use them as with only a couple of riders, we would be broken up into the various gradings...
