View Full Version : Peg slider material
This question is for those of you that are using my Muffler Sliders.
I am working on a set of footpeg sliders using the same material. How do you think they will hold up? The picture below is an early version.

The only issue I can see with that design is that when you crash the bolts holding the slider in place will most likely grind the track surface, which is what karts dont want.
Nope. The pavement will hit the tip and fold with the surface. I layed the bike on its side which is as close as it could get and the Bolts will never hit.

Thats good.
How do they cope after getting really hot from crashing? I melted the hard plastic slider from crashing on it.
But for general track work (ie not crashing), seems good to me. If you have the bolts mounted in the middle, you can get 4 sides out of it, top left, bottom left and same on the right end, if you know what I mean.
i think scrutinneering would turn u away with the bolts hanging down like that plus i don't think they cover enough of the peg -- my twocents

If you could get a really tight turn on the material, you could cut a slot in the top of it and slide it onto the peg's outer surface so it fits in a " U" shape. Then you can fit it on with zip ties and a few well positioned holes in it.

We did something like that, using pieces of thick PVC hose, drilled and cable tied to footrest. The problem was as you grind the PVC away eventually you grind the cable tie through as well.
So you either have metal bolts (or U bolts) that eventually wear the track or cable ties that eventually wear through exposing footrests that grind the track.
catch 22
Either type must be replaced regularly to work.
Our other problem is the ground clearance you loose by fitting them encourages you to wear them out sooner.
Catch 44

Has anyone ever put rear sets on a motard bike to get more ground clearance? Ie welded up a bracket or just relocated the stock pegs?
Thats good.

You melted one of mine crashing on it or some one else's? If so that must have been one hell of a (hot) crash! Guess it did its job though?
You got the idea! Im trying to get 4 sides that can wear. If not 4 at least 2.
I tried cutting a slot so it could slide over the end of the peg but it looses too much of its structural integrity. I tried slitting it and cutting wedges so it could fold but then It sits higher than the peg.
I think this is the winner. The Double Barrel Slider!
I have not crunched the numbers yet but I think I might be able to get it as low as $25 US The next step is to get some one who really abuses their pegs (and crashes a lot) to test them.

Looks good.
I melted peg sliders, not the pipe slider.

Not so much rear sets but high sets. There are kits that lift pegs, they mount on orig brackets but sit higher.
APA--you'll have to at least grind off exposed threads before using them, but even so they have a very temporary lifespan-- the trick is to make them easily fitted / changed. And a lot less than $25.
I have since tightened the nuts a lot more and would have cut them off but these are still going off and on a lot so I have not.
i think ash had the right idea with his sliders, but maybe a bit big.
i thing the rubber on ur sliders will wear to easily plus i think the nuts and thread is also an issue.
Something i have seen as peg slider is like a piece plastic choping board in a thin layer underneath the peg. Material is about max 8mm think with screws resessed into the material and attahed to the peg via the grooves on too of peg. I actually saw this on troy herfoss and adam cini's huskys. solves the isssue of ground clearance.
APA - I was trying to figure out a cheap multi usable pegslider.
I made one out of a piece of 50dia delrin rod cut to 15mm long and halved to make it semicircular then screwed through the peg into tapped holes - it was effective but only works it the bke has a plate in the footpeg to mount onto.
My next plan is to use a piece of square section delrin (20mm square x 70mm long) with 2 through holes in the middle, the u bolt mounts through the peg then through the slider. when one end grinds down, it can be flipped around 180 degrees to grind the other end. It may be usefull to have 2 more holes (produced at 90 degrees to the first set) so the slider can be rotated 90 degrees (longdituninally) to get more wear?
Just did a quick model of it so you don't have to put up with my crappy descriptions...

4 holes may not be the best idea and it would be nice to counterbore the nuts. Note: the holes run right through the block.
Like Jovian says, I'd also conside using csk or button head screws, the only issue is fixing to the peg, the factory bikes probably had a plate welded into the peg to screw into.

Ash's design is held on with zip ties that have been rebated into the slider material. The slider does not move, as it has cutouts that slot perfectly for the peg and it just slips on.
I can attest that the do work, as I tested one to almost destruction and it stayed on and I just turned it 180 deg and it works perfect again. I dont have any pics, Ash you hearing this??? Lets see your sliders.
I will post a pic of the used side tomorrow.

I have a solution to your peg slider problems for supermotard, but need to finalise the production costings to see if they are a viable M.P. item for the SMC catalogue. ;)
Will be cheap, and easily renewable.
ok muzz let me know when u have them done i need a new set

i made a set out of cutting board and lockwired them to the footpegs, does the job, gets thru scruiteneering

Ash's set seem to be the ticket :)
Only problem with the pipe slider thinggy is it doesn't look very bling :(

I have to agree with a few others and totally agree with Jovian on this one.
Ash's sliders are well thought out and on the money.
They are a little thick but a few track days will fix that!
I'm a bit worried about eventually grinding through the zip tie that holds them on but a little more develoment and a different mounting method will fix that in no time.
I have not put mine on yet as my pegs are a bit of a mess at the moment and I either need to get a new set or clean up the existing pegs with a dremel. The material they are made out of as Paul mentions is hard wearing. (Delrin?)
Get a set off Ash (If he has any left as I believe I got the last set) and check them out, they rock. Then you will have to pay him royalties though. ;) (Quick Ash, patent them!)
If you don't mind the feedback the on yours (APA) they look pretty agricultural and the bolts are a bit of an issue in my eyes. :)
I had the KTM Hard parts ones, they lasted (the left one anyway) one track day. Fucking useless and way too pricey for a 'consumable'.
My 2 cents worth. ;)
Cheers,
Juz.

I have ground a set back to the peg and the cable tie doesn't touch so I'm not worried about them getting ground through
I will have more soon, I am waiting for the quote to come back from the NC machinists. Once I have the quote I will hopefully have 100's in a matter of days! Sorry Jove I haven't forgotten you I just didn't want to give you a date until I could guarantee that I would be able to have them to you!!
I have a set for a 05 DRZ left which will still work on the KTM/Berg pegs.

Cool. Disco bob is probably the person to talk about them locally as he deals with the SME import side of things.
Update: The double tube sliders are working well with better than average wear by a very aggressive rider purposely dragging them for long periods.

funny thread steve, when u get some pics post em up
