I just thought I would air my opinion on the HUSQVARNA smr 450, for general interest. I was at a bike shop (not mentioned for dislike of one persons attitude to what demo bikes are for) and was looking at getting a demo on another bike, CRM250.
Well, I ended up taking the smr 450 out, I blame the sales guy (good bloke) for talking me into a ride.
Well what I liked about it. This is my opinion people, so don’t take it as fact. Pretty good power (for a four stroke), only a bit down on my yz250 stroker. The engine seemed to like a few reves to develop good power, which I like, as some dirt bikes run out of go when you rev them. Did power wheelies in third, don’t know about 4th. The brakes, oh my god! Stoppies on cold rubber with full confidence! F'ing unreal. Fork settings, it did not dive like my yz does while doing stoppies, so a tick from me.
What I did not like about it.
The electric start. I don’t know if it is me, but I found that you had to do some special thing with the decompression lever to get it to start. It was a bit embarrassing when the bike stalled after a stoppie and I had to faf around to try and get it to start again.
I also don’t like the engine braking. it is really annoying and you have to be careful when doing stoppies to make sure that the clutch is in and some reves are dialled in, otherwise the bugger stops and won’t roll start, bastard 4 strokes.
There is also lots of heat coming through the shrouds that really heat your legs up.
The bike backfired heaps, not just little pops, they were really loud and annoying. It might just happen because of high revs, I don’t really know, because I was having too much fun to pay attention!
I don’t know what speed the bike does in certain gears, because I was having too much fun to pay attention. I did actually look down during a few wheelies, but as the speedo comes from the front wheel, the speed was a lot less that I was actually doing.
Overall, it will bring out the worst in you and you will have to try hard to keep your licence.
If you own one of these and cant do spectacular wheelies for as long and high as you want, you are not in first, second or third.
