Ok guys, I'm looking at moving us to a new hosting arrangement that is going to give a lot more control over what goes on at the site. The down side is that it will be a lot more self management compared to the level of support we currently get (ie. we will get full control over the services, but will be the ones to ensure they keep running).

The problem at the moment is that I'm the only one who is set up to administer the system. While I can give certain rights (such as web authoring and moderation), I have stayed as the sole administrator of the inner workings of the site, mainly as I'm the one who wrote everything that's gone into it from an IT technogeek perspective (ie. the PHP code, database setup etc). While this is all fine and well it makes me a bit of a bottleneck, and means that if I'm away or miss something things aren't fixed until I get back, and moving to a more administrative platform makes me worry that this will be a problem.

SO. Now I'm looking to see whether anyone has IT web hosting experience who is prepared to help out. I'll still be doing the majority of the work, but need someone as backup to be alerted when shit breaks and who is empowered to delve into the working as necessary. Having said that though, this is a fairly technical requirement, so anyone who hasn't spent time working with a shell script environment (bash, csh, tcsh, etc) please step away from the keyboard now ;)

But if you're a unix head, would like to help out and are prepared to spend many hours for little or no return :lol2: then let me know, as I have the perfect job for you   ;)

I'll put my hand up.

No Unix here but plenty of Linux shell and many many things Windoze.
Forte is hardware & OS's but not a coder as such.

Give me your IP sailor and I'll penetration test you within an inch of your motherboard. ;)

Usually only have to be shown once.

An option. :)

Thanks mate, linux is fine, that's what the servers run on (redhat or fedora, cant remember which offhand) ... the package i'm looking at moving to is a hosted virtual server, though i'm not actually sure how they specifically virtualise the machine i'm assuming its something like a vmware volume running linux, but should be functionally similar to a partitioned Solaris/SunOS server, so just look like a regular old redhat server on this side of the wall.

I have a kick arse mofo hornbag server here that is switched off doing nothing all day connected to a reliable adsl2 connection.

It has Win32 vmware on it but I have not played with it much yet.

It also boot's 98SE for dos crap, Auditor distro of Knoppix, 2k3 server, fedoracore4 & XP Pro.

Fuck, I've just blown my undercover geek status.

I'll have to come over for a few tutorials.

How much beer do we need? :)

As much as it takes to make it make sense :lol2:

Nah, should be pretty straight forward - apache, php, perl and a bunch of shell scripts and kron jobs is what i'm expecting. Plus they have some u-beaut web control panel thing for service start/stop/restart rather than shell scripts and kill...

Dont have any exposure to the stuff you were talking about unfortunately.
You could also be arrested by the Censorship Classification Board, and then you will have all the 'exposure' you want.
Its all your fault anyway, there was a tit stuffed into the keyboard and it made the computer go floppy and only 3 1/2 inches long ...
