August 6 & 7 marks Round 2 of the Stay Upright Queensland Supermoto Titles held at Mareeba's Mako Track. The Far North Queensland Road Racing Club will host the round on a newly built race track designed specifically for the meeting. The track is a 1305m Kart Track with a 275m dirt section built and designed by local Riders Justin Schuberg and Ross Taylor. Round 1 was a huge success with great racing and Mareeba will be the perfect venue conclude the championship as Supermoto continues to flourish in the region.
S1 Over 450cc Class
Ross Taylor holds a slender 20 point lead over Seeton Battle with Alex Harriman still within striking distance of the pair. Taylor also leads the Australian S1 Supermoto Championship and is in good form leading into the event. Other competitors coming into the event in form are Tom Gardiner on the KTM 515 and Pete Smith on the Husaberg 570. Both racers are currentely in the top three in the Australian championship and will be racing hard to put their bikes on the podium in Mareeba as well. Gardiner was the top placed C'Grader in round 1 and will be looking to maintain that title in Round 2. The big bore title should be close with all riders prepared to push Ross Taylor all the way to the Number 1 plate on his home track.
S2 450cc Class
North Queenslander Jared Koppe, Sunshine Coaster Beau Laing and Darling Downs local Alex Harriman all have a chance of the winning the S2 Title in Mareeba. Koppe has the championship lead after winning 7 of the 8 races in Round 1 on his RMZ 450. Harriman's consistency resulted in him being second in the championship over Laing. Laing rode well in the recent Australian Supermoto Championships placing third and the highest placed Queenslander. Laing will be on board his new TM450, hoping this will give him the edge to push Koppe and Harriman to all the way to the finish line. Other riders in the class looking to pressure the top 3 are Steven Relph, Warren Gill, Darren Webb and top C'grader from round 1 Peter Cox. The 450 class is always spectacular with a big field of talented riders all chasing glory.
S3 250cc Class
Beau Laing takes a 28 point lead over newcomer Peter Hull with the pint size Sam Crossley in third place going into Round 2. Laing dominated round 1 winning every race on his Yamaha YZF250. Hull used his motorcross skills and adapted quickly to the tarmac and with more time on the bike could be the one to push Laing in Round 2. The class continues to build and introduce new young talent into the sport especially in north QLD.
Veterans Class
Ross Taylor's first foray into the veterans class was a success taking out Round 1. Taylor won 7 of the 8 races but was pushed all the way by Darren Webb and Steven Relph. The class always lives up to the hype as crowd favorite with close racing from the front to rear of the field. Webb and Relph are locked in a close battle for second and push each other in every race for thier place on the podium. The ageless combatants will no doubt put on a good show again and steal the show as always.
The two round championship is an exciting development for the sport and all the riders, clubs, sponsors, officals and Motorcycle Queensland need to be congratulated for their efforts in getting the series off the ground in 2011. In addition to the championship classes the novice class will also be run again giving newcomers to the sport a chance to have a go at Supermoto. Entry forms are available from
http://www.mqld.org.au/fileadmin/user_upload/state_files/qld/Documents/SuppRegs/2011/FNQ_Supp_Regs_Qld_Supermoto_2_2011.pdf
Bike transport will be organised out of Brisbane with spaces still available, please email supermotoqld@yahoo.com or by calling 0431 989 540.

Matt you really should get out there and just have a go, you will kick yourself for not doing it!
Matt, even if you don't want to race, come out and have a play in the novice class. No stress, ride at your own pace and experience what supermoto is all about! I guarantee you won't look back.

LOL How did you know? :)
Seriously I still don't feel comfortable yet, another 2-3 track days and then maybe I'll be ready but right now with other commitments and everything that's going on I don't think I should, I did promise my wife that I wouldn't race again after I had a bad accident (but that was a long time ago....).
Never say never but it won't be happening this year.
excuses excuses thats all we ever hear on here
the novice class isnt a race, its track time 10 mins inisde the race meet schedule. the novice class is basically a track day. there isn't even timiing. no group starts etc. if u want to do more track days its the perfect time.
The novice sessions at Mareeba are your only chance to do a proper Supermoto track day. It's an opportunity for those riders that don't want to race to experience the event from a rider's perspective.

Another quick update, Justin has put a bit more dirt in some key areas that we felt could have been improved on and a bit of a reshape with a bobcat so the whole show will flow together that bit better.
Remember guys, this has come together with very few people actually doing the hard yards. The track is great (havent seen the upgrades yet. you lot will see it the same time as me now) however we want the constructive feedback to change/improve the track in time to come if need be.
So get those entries in and help the club get supermoto in oz kicking

The event really needs more support from the locals. I know there are a few novice riders around, it would be great if u came out and supported the event. its a great chance to support the sport, learn from the fastest riders and have a great weekend.
no point waiting for next year

I'll be there watching...unfortunately just watching not riding this year, but I am looking forward to meeting a few of the guys from the forum, have safe journey up to paradise!
why???????????????????????????
i would seriously like to understand. there is a novice class there for you to ride, its not a race, u dont need an MA license, heaps of qaulity track time and at the moment you would have the track with one other person. its basically 3 days of track time!!
P.S. if ur worried about people thinking ur a gumby not one really worries to much about the novice class and people think ur more of a gumby for watching a race meeting u could of ridden at.
it would be great for us to know why people in this area who regurlary ride at this track aren't going to ride. we need this info to help grow our sport and work out if we are going in the right direction with getting new riders in.
what do we have to do to get novice riders to turn up and have a go? We want to know whether its the riders being dreamers or whether what we have on offer just isn't welcoming enough.I would personally love to reduce the amount of "Next Years" as they often never end up riding the year after either.
please give us some constructive feedback.

It has nothing to do with the racing or how it's run etc... (I think the promotion has been great, I see the posters everywhere, even at the tip office!)
Honestly I couldn't care about how fast I am or how silly I look but right now I'm not able to devote any time to it, I'm in the process of buying a business and that's keeping me running all day everyday, I haven't even ridden the bike in a very long time, my head is in another place at the moment and it would just be a waste of time and money for me to go and race.
While I am a novice at motard I did road race for 5 years so I know what it's like and I loved it but at this point in time I just can't commit to anything else even if it's just for a weekend.
When I meet you in person I'll explain it a bit better I hope.

I hear both sides of the story and I'm always trying to be mindful that many of us have limited funds to be able to go racing. The biggest cost for us NSW guys is transportation and travel costs. Only a fraction of our members can manage to participate but I can tell you some of us are struggling big time to make it. I guess those guy's passion drives them to it.
On the other hand, I am starting to understand how much work, money and stress goes into organising these events and the disappointment if the numbers aren't there. Hopefully those that get on the track will provide the spectacle that will encourage guys on the sidelines to join in the next time coz they'll have a blast if they do. So at least get as many spectators as we can.
Let's keep hammering away and supporting where we can - I feel Supermoto is beginning to get off the ground again.

Hey all, I am a Cairns local and a lifetime fan of Motocross after being carted all over Vic and SA to scrambles from birth to the age of 17 to watch my dad and brothers race and my parents would never let me race. Now I am married, midde aged and haven't been on a bike in 20 years but my dream still lives on.
I haven't even been to a race since I was a teen but having developed a keen interest in photography over the last few years when I discovered this event was on in Mareeba I talked hubby into going up today and I had a ball. Got some fab photos too which I will post separately for anyone interested in seeing them.
If I was in a position to race I would have been there with bells on today.

My rear tyre lost its profile for some reason. I turned it back to front for sunday but it only just survived. The sides got ground flat. We all said the track was hard on tyres but i worked out that if an average lap was 1:25 that means those who did two classes got over 3hrs of riding. Thats not including friday practice

WOW!!!!! What a weekend. The track, the club, the riders, officials, crowd, sponsors and media did an amazing job of this event. I take my hat off to FNQRR Club doing such a good job of organising the track and the event. Awesome racing all weekend with wheelies and an atmosphere only supermoto provides. The event set a new standard for Supermoto in Australia and if u don't make it next year ur crazy. A special mention to Justin S and Stay Upright for all there effort. Its takes alot of work to organise events like this and to do such an amazing job first time around needs to be recognised. I would like to thank everyone involved in putting on an amazing event and making the two round championship so good. Cant wait till next year.
On a personal note I love the track but didnt have a very good weekend. Race 3 the bike failed/seized and i had brake issues all morning anyway. Got on Gez's KTM SMR451 to make up the numbers and had a good time setting up her bike. Had a decent crash in the second last race that knocked me around a bit but i recovered to ride the last race. The feeling among the riders was special and its great to be part of such a great event. Ended up 5th overall in the championship.
Gez had a great weekend to and rode so well I was very impressed!! I have never seen anyone enjoy thier riding so much!!!

Thanks (I think) to Pete Cox who loaned his 450 to Leonie to have a run round in the novice category. She has 3 broken ribs, but secretly she had lots of fun. Cool is a girlfriend who races.
A huge thanks really should go to Dave Howitt who did the posters, supp reggs, timing and about one million other things. He emerged with his marriage intact, just.
I had heaps of fun commentating and hope to see more of you next year.
that sucks Matt, hopefully she rides again next year with Gez

Well said Jov I had one of the best weekends up there but as you pointed out it takes a hell of a lot of planning and hard work so on behalf of NSWSMR I'd like to thank all those hard working people from FNQ Road Racers who got it all off the ground.
Would love to see some footage from the TV guys (yes, they were there).
In particular, I'd like to thank Justin and Ricci for putting up with a house full of NSW knob heads, Stay Upright for getting behind it from the start (no bias intended) thanks guys, Maestro, you and Bernie put in big time and you made the show a good one, kept the crowd on edge then there's Relphy who brought the big rig out again and Pedro for doing the run to and from Brissy.
I rode outta my skin all weekend - couldn't relax as I always had someone nipping at my heels - got the 3rd in Vets for the round and series so am very happy.
Got heaps of great feedback from spectators, many of whom were motorcyclists.
Let's do it again next year and bring our mates.

I've been speaking to a friend who is the tourism game and he's interested in helping next year with promotion etc...
I was utterly dumbfounded by the complete lack of interest from our local dealers, what a pathetic bunch! There's a Honda shop 5 minutes away and they didn't bother showing up, what's wrong with this town?
I think the club did a magnificent job as well as Ross/Bernie, Justin etc... and thanks to all the guys for coming up and experiencing our local track, shame about the weather really, today it was 30c with hardly a cloud in the sky, but that happens...
Well done to all involved
