Well my shiny new tard wheels for the DRZ are arriving next weekend & i'm trying to distract myself from the big wait by buying other bits for it :P

Having helped with a mates DRZ convesion to dirt a few times, i've decided on getting a new rear disk(from the sounds of it, the loctite issues arent worth the hassle), plus a new rear sprocket and a fresh chain for the road.

I know i'll be needing a different ammount of teeth on my rear sprocket for the road, any reccomendations for road gearing from those of you who've played around with gearing on a DRZ?

Next up is the Chain, there seem to be a hundred different types, "w" ring "x" ring "o" ring "cicrus" ring Telephone Ring etc.

"O" ring seems pretty self explanitory, but the others dont make much/any sense at all.

What the hell is the difference between them all? any reccomendations? i dont want a chain that will make me a sandwitch and critique my riding when i get off, but i dont want something shitty thats gonna stretch & crap out on me too soon either.

Cheers!

The 'O', 'X' and now 'U' are profiles of the O-rings between the link pins.
Traditionally a non O-ringed chain would be fine for road only.
O-Rings were for mixture of track and MX.
X-Rings were specific really to not retaining muck having 2 sealing surfaces on every end of a link pin, by way of the ring actually being X shaped in profile.
U chains are a step further in that technology, or supposed to be, and outlast other chain profiles apparently in way of stretch.

Price varies greatly between the 3 main types and the O or X will be fine.
Gearset wise I would say 14/40 round town and have a 15 handy for highway, setting the rear wheel almost as far rearward as it will go and still allow for a minimum of adjustment to start with.
That way you should get the 15 tooth sprocket on with the wheel completely forward and not have to alter chain lengths.
Neil will have the good oil though. ;)

If you like doing anything that involves 100kph then I'd look at 15/41, or even 15/39. I ran the latter on mine and it pulled it nicely with the bore and cams, but might struggle slightly with the stock motor. I ran 41 with the stock motor and that was fine though, but preferred 39 to be honest once I got the motor sorted out a bit...

And I generally just go for any sort of chain that has some sort of ring thinggy in it :)

Awesome thanks guys, O-ring it is.

that spreadsheet is mighty usefull thanks Neil,
I plan on doing some engine stuff later on but for now i recon i'll go 15/41 for round town & weekend rides

At the moment its got an opened airbox & Acerbis pipe. the owner before me was a mechanic & i'm pretty sure he's done some jetting work as it pulls a bit harder than my mates stock DRZ, but that could just be the pipe?

Possibly, the full yoshi pipe certainly added some to the stock motor...
