And once again,
Yeah I know its Grand Final Day.
Cant cop a trick this month, 3 track days and 2 of them on weekends that clash with other interests.
All the same, I will be there again.
With 2 weeks notice now surely more than a couple of you can say to your mates when they ask "Wanna come ova an' watch the game in tha shed with a few beers?"
"Love too mate but cant make it til about 2.30, got a morning thrill with some other mates first, then I'm comin ova, make sure the piss is cold dickhead  ..."
Well? Sounds feasible doesn't it?

Still waitin for bits - hopefully should turn up in 2-3 weeks for the bits on back order, and am taking the opportunity to change out some bits, such as the black excel rims that will be used in lieu of the husky one as well as an increase to a 5" on the rear ;) Bro gets lumped back on a plane tomorrow and me lumpy rear end is very slowly subsiding, so things are on the mend at least :)

Count me in.
Should be a good time to test the slipper if I get it in by then.
Might also stick my second set of body work on and the stock pipes.
Call me soft but if it's mud in the dirt bit's I'm going to stand on the fence and drink beer. Last time I tried I think I came off 4 times. :)

I'm am definitelygonna get a bigger bike and are trying to decide on a single or a twin.
Either would normally be orange but can be black also. ;)
I would like to be pedalling a new one when you pick yours up.
All the same, GPTC its is 30th on the mootard again.
Dont stress out too much about dirt Justin,
We usually dont bother, its tight, and tends to slow down the pace too much.
Its about fast mate, not slow and dusty

Wasn't trying hard enough 8)

From what I saw he did pretty well to keep it upright.
At one stage at the end of the straight he was setting for the corner and I think he thought he was going to cut me off so stood it up a bit and next minute it swung across on the headstem and he was endo-ing into the grass as I went underneath  ...
And again on the right hander before the straight.
I chuckled to myself as I rode through his more than generous tyre smoke.
He was trying to best of his ability and did pretty well I reckon ;) ...
Brett,
You also reckon with more time in the saddle you will catch and pass me, I hope so too ;) .
But before that a word of advice, sort out the style.
You need to decide what your doing round the 3 apex for instance.
Your hanging off the bike like a road rider but with your foot out?
Weight the outside peg, tip it in MX style, elbows up and serve the fucking thing.
It will only slide, no wonder I could ride round you..
Sort that out and it will be harder for me to catch you inside 3 laps on the 250.
This is constructive mentoring not putting you down mate OK.
I hate seeing blokes who love their bikes going down the road without the bike. :D
Sibbo
19-09-2006, 10:57 AM
I was developing a new style of riding. Sibbo Style.
By hanging off a bit to the inside, I was keeping the bike upright, so more contact patch. By sticking the leg out, more weight to the inside, which will also allow the bike to be more upright, but still give me the ability to slide the boot on the ground in an attempt to keep it upright is it goes wrong.
As the corner is a long sweeper, I feel it is faster to road bike it around. It is one of two sections of track I actually make up ground on you. By about 1/2 way (2nd apex), I start to gain on you. The other is braking at the end of the straight.
But, yes, I do have a lot of work to do. And I do intend on listening carefully to what you have to say. If you want to spend time doing a bit of coaching type work with me, it would be great.
And I forgot to say, the outside peg is constantly being pushed down on very hard on most corners. It instantly makes me feel more settled and confidant, so I do it almost as instinct.

Ok... Taking on board the Sibbo Style, please explain to me a few points which I am confused.
Firstly,
Think about how you describe the weight distribution on the bike.
How can you possibly be off the inside of the bike, and still have weight on the outside peg?
This does not lend itself to any contact patch at all.
Do you now see why you binned it both times in the same corner?
Where was the weight as you tipped in and then started to touch the throttle?
Certainly not on the front wheel...
Secondly,
I rode a couple of laps every session (and only once did I enter the track before you and Angus) before getting the tyres warm, you didnt gain on me, when they were warm inside 3 laps on every session I had passed you.
The 3 apex is close to half the total length of the track and the straight about 180 mtrs.
With propelled mass of the 650 coming down the straight and gaining on me on the 250, of course it will feel like you are gaining on me, I am in front so braking and entering the corner before you.
If you think you were gaining on me on the 3 apex, how was it that I rode past you twice in different sessions, once on the outside and once when you yelled 'Fark' as I went in underneath.
That corner is the end of the 3 apex.
I couldnt pass you if you were quicker :?: .
Think Brett.
Best bet for mentoring from Muzz.
Close mouth, open throttle, think fast, ride faster, do what I do :D ...

You will be piss easy, excuse the play on words, to pass every lap mate.
Like the track pictured in Steves thread on the catch bottles.
Fancy putting the dirt section around the Beer Garden,
Handy to wash down the dusty throat as a spectator, but a hell of a distraction when your bike keeps turning right into the pub as a racer! :drinkers:

Sibbo

How can you possibly be off the inside of the bike, and still have weight on the outside peg?
When you push down on a peg, the bike moves to that side. If I press down on the right peg, the bike leans to the right. To keep the balance of the bike, I would need to move my body to the left, as to counteract the bike hanging out on the right hand side.
So if you apply this to a corner the bike runs through the corner at the same speed, but just not lent over as much. So you can go through the corner faster, because you can take advantage of additional lean angle.
Do you now see why you binned it both times in the same corner?
The first crash was me being harsh when moving around on the bike and I basically made myself crash by not being smooth. It was a long way before the apex, basically on tip in.
The second time was approaching the apex and I dont think I had any throttle. I was not leaning into the corner, just sitting in line with the bike (ie if the bike is learn over 10deg, I continue that 10deg). The leg was out and the outside foot peg was being pushed down.
Where was the weight as you tipped in and then started to touch the throttle?
I probably should of been sitting further forwards, as I was being pretty lazy and not moving around in the seat at all. Its strange why I crashed there, I was not even dragging a peg, which I had done lap after lap on the YZ. But the not dragging a peg, could be down to the hard berg suspension not compressing as much and makking peg scrapping lean angles much further over.
If you think you were gaining on me on the 3 apex, how was it that I rode past you twice in different sessions, once on the outside and once when you yelled 'Fark' as I went in underneath.
I am talking about when I was behind you. My pace lifted a fair degree when following, as I was trying to look and lean from you and I was going much faster behind you than when I was on my own.
You were also faster through the righ hander after the 3 apex, as I was slowing down too much for it.
Best bet for mentoring from Muzz.
Close mouth, open throttle, think fast, ride faster, do what I do :D ...
I think if I progressivly get on the gas sooner and harder, it will be very helpful. I need to use that 160 to good effect!

Riding stance for the corners is all fucked up and your reasoning behind it is just as bad mate.
I wish we could get a snippet of helmet cam so you could see yourself and then understand what you are doing arse about.
Seriously I have never seen anyone do what you are attempting to do and get any improvement.
You look from behind like a cross between someone about to crap in an asian toilet and an emu at full flight...
Either sit back on the bike, weight more of the outside and pull the leg in a bit but still run it on the ground if you must,
Or get some knee sliders, start to learn how to powerslide properly and ride like you stole it  ...

20-09-2006, 09:57 AM
So should I just MX next track day?
Flash
20-09-2006, 11:16 AM
Sibbo forget everything and ride it exhactly like the yz and I mean exhactly. You'll feel more comfortable and you might go even faster. That's how I ride there and on the road and I scrape my pegs everytime I get on the track (sometimes on the road) and that long left hander is where I was struggling the most to keep up with Muzz, I found he could open up the throttle through there and if I even breathed on it I would just do big slides. What I have to work on is to lean in a little more and not push the bike down quite as much, as I was rolling off the edge of the rear.
Ride it like the YZ and get used to it and you'll end up fast with big slides!!
I have to work the next track day but I'll bring a stopwatch for the one after and we'll see who is who :)
Sibbo
20-09-2006, 12:02 PM
I need to rig up the bar mounted switch for my berg lap timer and I will be able to keep tabs on how I improve with different styles.

if you read my reply to your backing it in article , you and see matt and i both have totally diferent styles , but our lap time are the same . thats the beauty of supermoto there is no right way , its a combination of different styles .
you have a headstart because you come from a mx background .so just ride the whels off the bitch ,will be carving muzz up in no time , but to do that you need track time and lots of it .
one more thing if you want a weekend away i have a spare 450 and a cart track 6.5 min from my front gate you could aways come over for a few days practice jet star just started flights from melb to bangkok very very cheap

Come on Sibbo, We are trying to help you.

True, but at the moment, it will be once a month at the track (if the track days were sundays, it would be more). Over summer, it will be every 2 weeks. Plus I will spend as many sundays as I can carving my mates up on their plastic fantastics up in the hills.
thats the beauty of supermoto there is no right way , its a combination of different styles.
I will play around with different approaches next track day and see which one is quicker and feels more comfortable.

Muzzard
21-09-2006, 09:40 AM
I reckon you should have a fiddle with the suspension a bit, maybe soften it a touch in the compression and remain the same on the rebound cause it felt so harsh in the front, and drop the tyre pressures down to 22PSI and see how it tracks the 3 apex then.
You will faster but you have to keep the elbows up, centre the weight onto the linear distribution line through the wheels to press the contact patch firmly and evenly, get the gear you want well before by short shifting as we do, then just feather the throttle and feed it slowly as you go round.
The off camber and negative ground effect of the corner means its about throttle and weight and when to use both.
You will find the next right hander so much easier to ride and thats where you will be able to sneak the advantage to outrun me down the straight.
Quicker through there and I have no where near the power needed to catch you. ;)

I am looking real closely at a KTM, trying to decide whether I should just get the 625 and add the bigger tank for my use here, or the 640 and do the engine mods like a carb swap that the 625 has standard. :?
Pretty well the same money by the time I finish with a pair of tunes at least to roll from the shop with ;) .
I haven't started haggling with prices on each model and the accessories yet, but have been doing the early hours thing too mostly scouring for nice bits for KTM 625/640's.
Looked all over the place for pipes and have found a few listings for up to 05 models but nothing except for the Hard Parts Akropovics for the twin setup.
Arrow list for the 525 etc but not the 625/640 with twin mufflers.
Wings seem to list to but no pictures or details.
I would really like to know what I can about the availability of bling bits as the bike has got to be unique as far as I am concerned.
Already found some white plastics, and that can be matched with the black ones and...
Europe has shitloads of hotup KTM stuff and I'll be in Lorenzo's ear for a few links...
I know you aint overly fond of the oranges mate, but I need something to cart the missus too  ...
I have been generously offered the use of a demonstration model available in this form by a friend, as well as the twin that I really want but then again cant decide, the 950 Motard or the 990 SD.
Mmmm,.. Titanium 990SD 8) .

choices choices , in a perfect world you could get the 950SM for the street and the 450/525 SMR for trackdays , then again if you keep the YZF mooster for track days and the 950 for the street and a few days at winton you can have the best of both worlds
Muzzard
21-09-2006, 09:30 PM
I'm sort of leaning that way too mate.
The 990 grabs me though, the FI engine, and the seating might suit my rooted spine better I think to have the tank to hang over a bit.
Would make a better big track and road ride.
Winton would be fun.
The 950 would also be nice but its dearer again and makes power differently I am told.
I have also been offered a days ride on either bike from the same friend and will very shortly be taking him up on the offer.
Accordingly I would be inclined to buy from the same friend, most likely the demo I ride when he is finished with it ;)
Tania likes the 950 in black not that has too much to do with the purchase, but she also thinks the 990 in Titanium is horny  ...

I know the problems we face with numbers and S.Morang. But you cant lump the entire responsibility on me to attend every track day. I will do what I can and I feel once a month is sufficient for me. I am not asking you to do anything at all...
If you dont feel some form of responsibility to see this track day deal work through attendance that is within your power to do, and after spending all that money on a new bike, posting here for others to see how good it can be, then others are right, and apathy is what fucks motorcycle sport in Australia from advancing, and I should close the website down, sell my bike and pull the doona over my fucking head!

*edit* I just measured the GPTC track using google earth (perhaps not the most accurate but I checked by measuring a known distance - Phillip Island @ 4.45km and it was spot on) the track is just under 500 meteres long - I did about 97 km round the track today - That's 200+ laps! This means, the length of the GPTC in comparison to Phillip island is equal to the distance from the bridge {over Gardner straight] to the mid point of turn 1!

They have already followed you around and are pointing to the hinge in the rear mudguard  ...
Good trip down and back, but a shit load better in between :D
Thankyou to the blokes who made the trek, a special mention for Dave and Anthony, a big distance to ride and do a track day in, especially given the time, expense and effort to get prepared, and then to punt the big DR around on 'meager to say the least tyres' as they did
Very well done Fellas.
Several blokes came in and although didnt ride, I think they also enjoyed what they saw and affirmed that with 'Yes I will be back next time' type statements, See you then ;) .. Dicky in November maybe, Stuart, Mark, and Craig the mini moto pilot as soon as he can operate a throttle again ;)
Those who did ride also as Tania said on the way home 'were smiling ear to ear as they took off their helmets'. :D ..
Justin brought out the big guns with slick fitted, factory cut Michelins too, and proceeded to buff them off a tad, before having to almost buff the inside of his leathers after a slight momentary lack of grip :toilet: , only for a moment, as the feet came out a bit like Shane was describing, requiring a rethink and reattack at the next session.
Paul was like a man who had just discovered sex and cocaine in the same day :smokin: , and I have no doubt he will be back after studying the video and be quicker next time round..
Brett only rode the first session I think and was required elsewhere so he also was happy to return next availability.
Neil porpoised his was round like he was at Sea World in the tank with them, on the KDX fitted with the special dive, dive, dive submarine forks to help the Sea World ride, and the back of that KDX got so green at the end of the back straight  ...
The bike did remarkably well really, and Sibbo woulda loved it cause it made a really nice exhaust note going round the 3 apex and as it peak revved down the back straight through the gears, but he was eating sandwiches at Nunawading ;) ...
Thanks for the hospitality Neil, and so much more relaxed than having to cater to the family or rush home after riding most of the day.
Angus was attacking the track like a man possessed but unfortunately his possession was that of the grass at the end of the straight, and the tarmac on the very end of 'Shit Corner' as will be now known, for when we ever run backwards again ...
I hate it when my mates fall off their bikes and its worse when you see it happen, :(
He was still smiling when the session finished and as the boys hooked in and repaired the minor misalignment to the barkbuster. :?
Chris and his brother in law (I'm sorry about your name because I have forgot) also sent the big Berg round like a missile for several sessions and buffed off a new set of tyres Chris had fitted earlier that day. :P
All in all, I think the general outcome of the day was a success in every way even given the few slight off track excursions.
Tania was happy to just be there and chat with the people her husband 'speaks to on the internet' put names to faces, and generally assist.
She is also very appreciative of the thanks you have passed to her for her efforts with the food and drinks.
She was thrilled when Angus' girlfriend Sarina came in to watch him do his thing, there was another girl!
I can only encourage you to invite your wives and girlfriends to come and join in with not only what you are doing but also to keep my missus company
I enjoyed myself again as I always do when I'm riding my bike with some mates, and hope I didnt put any of you off by stuffing it in the inside now and again, but I like to give yo a taste of what it can be like if you haven't had the opportunity to do other track days where blokes you dont know are also buzzing around, or racing where its ever man for himself and you have to have an ability to stand it up or lay it over to get through the corner.
I dont think it was too upsetting to any of you and had a couple of good runs trying to round up the 3 big KTM's on the 3 apex using wide line and I think Paul and Angus both did very well to get big bikes like the LC4's around there as fast as they were going on the Pirelli's.
Thanks to Braxton for giving me a light for my cigarette
Oh, yeah, my tyres are fucked  ...
Thanks for coming boys and the help throughout the day. ;)
I think with some better preparation over the next fortnight, we could have a really good day 14 October, weather permitting...

Btw, I have another cam that anyone can have a lend of if they want. I gave paul one basically the same as the one I was using but I have another spare, but it's significantly larger as it has infa-red LEDs on it - its about 2 inches in diameter so would only be usable being mounted on the bike somewhere. But its free - let me know if anyone wants to have a play and I'll bring it to the next track day :)

Well that was a good day on saturday, good turn out, good group of people and much fun. The little-bike-that-could went ok though I was suffering from a bit of a lack of drive due to a slipping clutch and my ability to go around corners was somewhat hampered by the massive amount of suspension dive  But that's easily fixable and we'll see how we go next time :)
It was excellent to see quite a few tards out, especially as this will be an important time for us in the transition of the track to the new owners, so that we can be seen to be using the facilities, generating good numbers and bringing revenue into the facility. This will be very important of course once they go through with any new works on the track and ammeneties that will of course have to be funded.
The helmet cam worked ok even with its makeshift taping of batteries to helmet ;) and after a bit of editing the first helmet cam video is up. Unfortunately its only me wobbling around so you'll just have to imagine it was someone going fast ;)

I have cobbled together a quick movie from the footage I took on Saturday but I'm having troubles uploading it to the gallery - I get the "uploading file, please be patient" window but even after an hour it doesn't go away - I'm on a reasonably fast connection and the file is only about 47Mb - Nothing compared to Neil's monsters! Am I missing something really obvious (often the case).
Muzz - Great write up I particularly like the description of my SM riding style
Neil - I didn't think you were going to put the near miss up! It's lucky there is no microphone on your setup, you will just have to imagine the words! Loving the use of metallica on the first one.

Why throw away the best part of the entertainment? :lol2: The gallery upload thing can be a bit dodgy with big files, but try using MS publishing wizard (go to the 'other' tab i think it is in the upload popup to download the registry entry and then follow the instructions). I just recently found this feature in gallery and it works ace for uploading large numbers of photos and may be more reliable for bigger files.
Failing that I'll set up the FTP site and you can FTP it there and I'll do some magic behind the scenes to get it into the gallery ;)
Wobbly
03-10-2006, 12:34 PM
I've also managed to recompress the videos to much smaller size without dropping too much quality so will upload them later this week for those bandwidth challenged....
Thanks for that Neil - I downloaded the registy entry and it seems to work quite well... up until the point when I try to log in and it doesn't like my login - Does it require a different login? Yes, I am using the correct password and case!
Wobbly
03-10-2006, 02:17 PM
It should just use the same login ... worked for me ok but I can't think of what might be set up differently ... the gallery has its own user credential store but should defer to the ones stored under phpnuke when used in an integrated frameworks such as this...
Let me set up the FTP site and we can use that instead...
